well you liked Sideways and I thought it looked like a home movie and left during it. Conversly, I do not think you like big movies like The Aviator even though they are good. CB as KH was awe inspiring and jaw dropping. But, to each their own

You're right, I thought The Aviator was utter ****. Especially as a film about Howard Hughes, it really sucked in that respect. I can't stand DiCaprio, anyway, I think he's awful. I did love Cate Blanchett because I always do, but I'm going with Madsen. :D I don't get what you mean by the home movie-ness of Sideways, though.

But to each his own, like you said. :)

Epic means nothing to me, my friend. Titanic was epic, yet the script and story stunk to the high heavens and for every good performance, there was an awful one. The Postman was an epic and that was unwatchable. I didn't think The Aviator delivered and Scorcese certainly doesn't hold a candle next to Eastwood this year. It's sad that he's never won an Oscar, but he doesn't deserve to win this one just because he hasn't won before. The first half was quite good, but after the first hour, it went down the ****ter. And I just couldn't get over what a missed opportunity it was.

Just my opinions, though. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

GardenStateGirlie 02-27-2005 05:27 PM

I still think Zach Braff was completely shafted. I haven't seen anything that was nominated this year but i'm rooting for Sideways because it's the only movie I had an interest in seeing other than Closer

Why? I thought you loved watching some Wendy Pepper :p They seriously have played that about 15 times since Wednesday night. It's getting annoying now.

Really? Wow. He made HH sympathetic to me. :)

I loved him in the Basketball Diaries and Marvin's Room, too.

I agree and pretty much everyone I have seen who has worked with him praises him as the real deal. AND - I am not a big fan of his. Personally, I think he should have won for Gangs of NY - along with MS and DDL for that.

I find him very whiney and childish in most of his movies. There's something that just gets under my skin. When I watch actors perform, I want them to make me forget that they're actors, I want them to be the character they're playing. He fails to do that for me and comes across as very self-conscious. He should take lessons from his co-star Cate Blanchett. Now THERE is an actor. :D

I LOVE Blanchett. I want her to win tonight. She should've won for Elizabeth over Gwyneth Paltrow. Plus, I think Cate is gorgeous. :)

Paltrow was good in the Bar flic., but IMO NOTHING like CB as QEI - she was sooooo subtle in that, esp. in the last scene

She's beautiful. I thought she should have been nominated for Veronica Guerin last year, she was fab in that one. I don't know, though, any other year I'd be rooting for her, but not this year.

I was shocked she wasn't nominated for VG. Even if she doesn't win this year, she will in due time. It's a given.

Oh, how could I have forgotten that?! She made that movie, IMO. Such a bitch but such a poor little creature. I'd be just like her if I had Roy Scheider for a pop.

dissention 02-27-2005 06:28 PM

Loved this little write-up in the local paper about best supporting actress:

"Here I sense a two-person race between Virginia Madsen and Cate Blanchett. Either could win, but Madsen would make the better story: Hard-working and popular for 20 years, she gets a role that allows her to shine and runs with it. On the other hand, audiences were much amused by Blanchett's eccentric turn as Katharine Hepburn. It's Madsen vs. Blanchett.

Prediction: Virginia Madsen
Preference: Virginia Madsen"

And that scene with MethodMan (or Redman, never have been able to tell 'em apart) and the hotel peepshow? I nearly died...

Damn do I love me some Boogie Nights. She was just spectacular in it.

Far From Heaven? Wow - talk about "being" the character, as opposed to an actor playing a character (like you said earlier, Diss.) Sean Penn's really good at that too, IMO.

I don't really care who/what wins tonight, I've only seen a few of the films nominated this time. And there are spoilers all over TV/radio/magazines this week, for some reason (jerks), so I may not even bother seeing Million Dollar Baby til it's out on DVD. I know nobody wants Jamie Foxx to win, but I do think he deserves it for Ray - forgot it was Jamie a few times, to be honest.

Other than that - eh. I'll just be checking out the clothes - stupid TV Guide Channel comes in really crappy at my house, but I will try to suffer through the snowy picture so I don't have to subject myself to Star's kiss-ass ramblings.

I HIGHLY recommend Million Dollar Baby. I had no desire to see it, ended up getting roped into it, and I was amazed. I actually wouldn't mind if Hillary Swank wins tonight because she was phenomenal. I want Sideways to win best picture, but I won't mind if this wins, either. Anyway, see it because you'll probably love it.

All I want is a Virginia Madsen win!

PS: Star is worse than ever. I tuned in and, my word, her face looks bovine. I wonder if she's had work done since last time.
