favorite epic songs...
I love epic songs. Songs that seem like they go on forever and it's good, because you never want them to stop. Ones that build up that anticipation, bring you to that point and back down again. I would have to say some of my favorites are:
The Rain Song (Zeppelin) Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Pink Floyd) LA Woman (Doors) |
How funny - I've been thinking about Meatloaf's "Paradise By The Dashboard Light" for the past few days... That thing goes on *forever*.
|
Don't shoot me but........
It's All Coming Back To Me Now - Celine Dion (love the unedited version) ...and of course Stevie's epic songs: Bella Donna, Wild Heart, Sara |
Layla by Derek and the Dominoes
First you get that rockin' guitar driven sound, then it progresses into the piano solo at the end. Sigh. Gotta love it. |

Hmmm...well, meatloaf songs, like somebody already said. I always think of Wheel in the Sky, and More Than a Feeling (don't shoot me) as epic songs, but i'm not really sure if they are. They definitely have that cheesy good epic sound, to me. I think Magic Man has some epic qualities, as well.
|
I was just listening to Magic Man (a live version) and was thinking the same thing. I should have put that one on my CD, too.

I'd add "November Rain;" "The Devil Went Down to Georgia;" and, of course, "American Pie." |
November Rain! I totally forgot about that one! I have to remember this stuff when I go to download songs. It seems like I get to a computer with DSL and forget everything!

And I definitely think "Total Eclipse" is epic... seven minutes long, a delicate piano & vocal intro, verses that build up steam as they go, an instrumental interlude that takes the song into its crescendo, and then finally a quiet, reflective ending that brings everything full circle. :) |

How could you forget Faster? God, I love that song sooo much. The fast piano, the big drums, the screaming vocal, the quiet parts, which in the end lead up to that high, high yowling with a fountain of aggressive drums behind it, and that piano, always fast, always underscoring...uh...oops, sorry, I dorked out about one of my favorite songs...hehehe...*insert sheepishness* :o But Total Eclipse is one of me and my friend's songs - we never know the same songs, she is AFA and knows way other songs than i know. But on this one, we duet beautifully. And she usually makes up an awesome 80's dramatic dance to go with it  *sigh* Good Times... :D |
"Hey Jude"...if it doesnt get on your nerves after a while, LOL!
Lets not forget "Sultans of Swing" too, and of course "Hotel California"! |

I don't know if these fit "epic" standards, but whatever... "Nobody Girl" by Ryan Adams "Jesus of Suburbia" by Green Day (both are 9 minutes +) "Go or Go Ahead" by Rufus Wainwright "Paranoid Android" by Radiohead. |
Hmmm...
lets see...
"Estranged"-Guns N Roses (Obviously) "Coma"-Guns N Roses "November Rain"-Guns N Roses "I'm Gonna Crawl"-Led Zeppelin "Kashmir"-Led Zeppelin "The Rain Song"-Led Zeppelin "Total Eclipse of the Heart"-Bonnie Tyler "Paradise by the Dashboard Light"-Meat Loaf "Disposable Heroes"-Metallica (Back when they were a real metal band) "Halloween"-Helloween (13 minutes+) "The Keeper Of the Seven Keys"-Helloween (Another 13 minutes+) "The Great Debate"-Dream Theater "In the Name of God"-Dream Theater & finally the 43 minute opus "Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence"-Dream Theater |
I don't think anyone's mentioned In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida! ("By I. Ron Butterfly" ) :D

HOW could you guys forget?
American Pie, by Don McLean ?
Long Long time ago I could still remember how the music used to make me smile And I knew if I had my chance that I could make those people dance and maybe they'd be happy for awhile...... But February made me shiver with every paper I'd deliver bad news on the doorstep I couldnt take one more step I cant remember if I cried when I read about his widowed bride But something touched me deep inside the day the Music Died.... So bye bye Miss American Pie drove my Chevy to the Levy but the Levy was dry and good old boys were drinking whisky and rye singing "This'll be the day that I die" "This'll be the day that I die......." there's more of course, because its EPIC! (I STILL know the whole thing by heart) I also want to suggest that Bruce Springsteen's early stuff had epic songs in there, and KISS's Rock and Roll all night and Party Every day could go on forever...also, believe it or not, Gordon Lightfoot did some epic songs, the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald comes to mind... |
The first noted Pink Flloyd tune- Crazy Diamond-excellent
How about Europa-Santana, it is instrumental but fits all the qualifications, also Sambre par te, by Santana- Blinded by the light- Manfred Mann Band (not Springsteen) Riders on the storm-Doors Freebird-Lynard Skinnard, as over played as it is---I still can't resist cranking it up when I hear it! Lala-already mentioned obvious Clapton choice...what about Further on up the Road? Whipping Post- Allman Brothers Silent all these years-Tori Amos AH----I have to go to work, I'll be thinking about this topic all day! Thanks!! oh can't forget....Lou Reed's Live _SWEET JANE! |
Or Robert Palmers' Sneaking Sally through the alley-Dancing Shoes tune?
or Dixie Chicken, live- Little Feat? or...I HAVE to go to work! smile |

Well, I guess that Stairway to Heaven might fit as well as Freebird.
I guess just long songs come to mind: Hold Your Head Up-Argent Roundabout-Yes Piano Man-Billy Joel Greeneyed Lady- Sugerloaf (I think it's by them) Baba O'Reilly- The Who Pinball Wizard- Elton John Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me-Elton John Ok here is an R&B song from the 70s that I hated but I guess that you could say that it is: Always and Forever- Rose Royce (I am not 100% it's by them) |

Nights in White Satin - The Moody Blues
Breath deep the gathering gloom Watch lights fade from every room Bedsitter people look back and lament Another day's useless images spent Empassioned lovers, wrestlers one Lonely man cries for love and has none New mother picks up and suckles her son Senior citizens wish they were young Cold hearted orb that rules the night Removes the colors from our sight Red is gray and yellow white But we decide which is right And which is an illusion... |
And since I can't stand to leave Lindsey Buckingham out of any conversation that he can be in anyway related to, let me add:
D.W. Suite from Law and Order Frozen Love from Buckingham Nicks I'm So Afraid from The Dance |
I love the 11 minutes and 3 seconds version of "Time Has Come Today" by The Chamber Brothers. It is just so cool and trippy! Great, 60s, psychedelic song. The shorten version just isn't even close to the original in greatness.
|
How could I have forgotten Frozen Love???

I can't believe I forgot about this song. Good choice! One of my favorite songs of all times. |
We have all forgotten American Pie.

Definitely Jim Steinman songs from Meatloaf's Bat Out Of Hell and it's follow up many years later. Bonnie Tyler's Faster Than the Speed Of Night, the title track and the big hit Total Eclipse of the Heart, Streets of Fire soundtrack with Nowhere Fast and Tonight is what it means to be young, Talyor Dayne's Original Sin from the Shadow soundtrack.
I would also say that Queen has some epic songs as does Floyd and Zep. I love songs that are so broad and massive in sounds and story book lyrics. |
