U.S. Festival 1983 Video
Does anyone know if Stevie was still married when this video was shot? She has a ring on her left ringfinger. I thought this was after her divorce, though.
Also - how funny is the footage of Stevie going over to the side of the stage to see Mr. Unibrow, dressed all in white, who nearly pulls her off the stage. And, Stevie mentions what "standing in a line" means after she does the song from her soon to be released album "White Heart". She says it means "standing in quicksand, and sinking". Now that is very different from her usual explanation of standing in a welfare line, don't you think?! Lori Perry dances like Elaine from Seinfeld in this video!  I just received my dvd copy of this from Brian (much thanks, Brian!!!), and I am watching it for the first time. |
This is one of my favorite videos. Stevie is hilarious in it, I love the girl scout cookie line :) I was so excited when I came across the upgraded version a couple of months back, my old one was awful. How Stil My Love is probably my favorite on this video.

"that is my....i don't really know why...maybe cause my grandfather was a bar singer...but that is my FAVORITE song to do on stage........so of course i do it!" gee, i haven't seen this concert too many times. it's one of my favorites of hers though. For the most part it's the Bella Donna show but just a bit more giddy.....and i wonder why???????? ;) |

I'm surprised to hear that...Sharon is usually the one who cannot dance. Check out the SNL clip of Stand Back for instance...Lori has some rhythm. |
Brian?? Brian who???

My boyfriend was dreading the arrival of my stuff, he saw it in today's mail and said, "Well, I guess you aren't going to be getting anything done today!" HOW TRUE :) |

Well gee I wonder why Lori has so much rhythm, can we say "SNIFFFFFFFFFFFFFF".
God only knows how much coke they all did before this show. Stevie is wasted. I love how she messes up G&B. However this concert kicks ass. Esp the new better quality version floating around. So since im on the subject. I recently got the 86 Dallas show. 1st off it should be illegal for Stevie to ever sing Leather & Lace and I cant wait live, I think I could have done a better job than her and I cant sing. Anyway she is TRASHED completely TRASHED in this 86 show, im sure most of you know. I wonder why not or if someone with common sense went to Stevie and told her how bad she sounds every night. How could her management let her go show after show sounding like crap for years? Ann Wilson, Pat Benatar, Debbie Harry, etc all sound great in 90% of the bootlegs I hear them on. Stevie is another story. I think the Stevie/Fmac bootleg community should honestly rate every bootleg performance as we do with show recording qualtiy. Don't get me wrong I have enjoyed listening to this Dallas show, but I doubt I will listen to it that much anymore. Once is enough when she sounds horrible beyond belief, messing up the words, coming in late, and the band didnt sound that tight either. So can anyone recomend a RAL show that she sounds ok in? Thank you for the laughs Stevie :) |
I enjoy the RAL shows, even though she sounds messed up. Cloaks and Daggers/Chicago is a good one. I like I can't Wait live personally. Leather and LAce though, should never be sung period! THat is probably my least fav of all of her songs. I can't Wait live though......love it!!!!!!

Here are the RAL shows (IMHO only) that have great performances along being solid quality recordings: Live Unapproved (Live Australian Compilation "Rock A Little" Tour-This is a awesome professionally recorded compilation of live tracks from Stevie's 1986 Australian tour) April 12,1986-Austin, TX April 19,1986-Iowa City, IA May 30,1986-Indianapolis, IN May 31,1986-East Troy, WI June 17,1986-Holmdel, NJ June 21,1986-Chicago, IL-"Cloaks And Daggers" July 14,1986-Mountain View, CA July 21,1986-Kansas City, MO Aug.20,1986-Morrison, CO-Red Rocks (Sourced from the video) Sept.6,1986-Weedsport, NY (FM broadcast) Sept.30,1986-Melbourne, Australia |

Stevie even managed to play to twice as many people as Fleetwood Mac did -- although I think there were extenuating reasons for that, too. Fleetwood Mac headlined, & people were tired. Stevie "opened" for David Bowie, who hadn't toured for awhile & people were extremely excited to see him live. The '83 US Fest was a lot more comfortable & better run, but the '82 US Fest had much better music & performances. The Grateful Dead were really cool. |
Was there no voice coach around in the 80s lol?

Go read/watch some old interviews from the time, and especially from TWH tour. Stevie admitted she was having problems (on and off stage), but what was she supposed to do? Pull a Xtina or Slutney and CANCEL THE TOUR? She would never have done that, because so so many people were depending on her (and yes, some leeching off her) to go out there every night and make the money. Not to mention the fans who were desperate to see her -- at the time, the last true rock-n-roll goddess still working as Eurotrash synth pop groups stole the airwaves. Besides, had you been at the concerts in the 80s, you would understand that a great portion of the audience was just as f-u-c-k-ed up as Stevie was. It was just a different time -- people EXPECTED to see Wild Stevie twirling and stomping and screaming and generally being crazy, but yet having a fantastic time in the process. It was a Catch-22 in every sense. And sure, Pat, Ann, and etc. may have given better performances *vocally*, but none of them have ever been able to sway a crowd *emotionally* like Stevie did/does. I've been to many concerts, and I have yet to experience anything like a Stevie/Mac show. People holding hands, hugging their friends, crying, dancing, laughing, screaming, even a few where the crowd was singing so loud along with their favorite song that you could barely even HEAR Stevie. If I could go back in time and re-live one of those WH or RAL shows again, I would ... in a heartbeat. |
<<
Stevie is a business, not a coffee club. They should have just called the RAL tour "The Stevie Nicks Comedy Hour". Im sure she was notified of her bad performances, and would rather continuing using than getting help. Honestly maybe the main part of the reason comes down to ear monitors? I dont think she was using them in the 80s? If she had been im sure her singing would of been better. Yeah people are more emotional about Stevie bc Stevie is a more emotional performer herself. Any other artist can sway a crowd just as good as Stevie. Ive been to enough Madonna, Cher, Tina Turner, Pat, Heart, Blondie, Cyndi, Go Go's concerts to choke a horse besides Stevie/Fmac. Ive seen people swayed just as much as they would at any other show. You should have been in the pit of a Madonna concert last summer. When Madonna did Crazy For You for the 1st time since 1985, not only was the whole crowed swayed they all sang along. Its all apples and oranges, everyone is just as awesome in their own way. Stevie isnt the only almighty queen out there that can sway a crowd. Its a shame that you are so anti pop music/Euro music. To each his own, im opened minded enough not to consider music trash just bc I dont like it. P.S. I agree with you on the Lori thread though lol ;) |

Besides, you're listening to a 20 year-old bootleg. You're missing the atmosphere -- the crowd noise, the reverb, the "thunder". And you're right --no ear monitors. I've typed out details about the Houston RAL show (opening night) on one of these threads. And if you think Stevie was F-U'd and unworthy in Dallas 2 nights later, you would have turned in your Frequent Chiffon Buyers card immediately after the Houston gig. But you know what? It was an AWESOME, EXCITING show. Quote:

As for Jessica, I'm actually starting to wonder if she even wrote that answer, or how heavily edited or re-written it was before posting. It just doesn't read right. But I do hope she gets to throw some bitchin parties. The kids are supposed to give the parents/family hell, especially if the adults were hell-raisers themselves. |

Well, that's bull. I was right under her nose. Girl is singing. |
^^^^^^^^^^^
Everyone knows Madonna doesn't sing in concert. Elton said so. So, I hope you enjoyed singing along to her tape. ;) And when did you start listening to/attending Go-Go's shows? Because they all rivaled Stevie for the Coke Queen Crown in the early '80s (and worse - have you seen the Vh1 shows about them?). As for Heart and Pat, they were over by 81, before Stevie started her solo stuff and before they had their "comebacks" with all those awful Holly Knight songs. And Cher, Tina, and Madonna put on stage shows, not rock concerts. ^^^^^^^^^^^^ I cant believe im wasting my time on you. Madonna sang about 70/80% of her show live. Any idiot knows that Pat and Heart weren't finished by 81 lol. Speaking of US Festivals, Pat played there in 82 the night before Fleetwood Mac  . The crowd was larger and louder for Pat. But I wonder how that could happen bc you said she was done by 81. I guess someone else continued to sell out arena's, sell millions of records and win all of the Grammy's. Tina is a rock show in my book, she has never lyp synced a note in concert ever. Nixxxed you just make yourself look so stupid, its real easy to investigate common facts. Yawnn yawnn yawnnn, your argument is such a waste of everyones time. |
With all due respect - not that you have shown any to anyone else with your flippant and smug "I know it all" attitude  - I was on the front row for the Drowned World Tour and could hear her singing voice, which was most definitely NOT what was coming out of the speakers - personally, I think she had some sort of pro tools voice manipulation in her mic or on the sound board that made her on key. I saw and heard that with my own to eyes that night. I also heard it again the next night from the third row. Also, she most defintely was not singing for much of the dancing part of the concert.
I think Madonna is a GREAT entertainer, but she is no singer - in fact even she has said as much. |
Look MadgeBoy25, I don't know where to begin with you. You're critisizing the VERY BEST Stevie tour there was. The RAL album on the othe rhand is a different story, but that was the best tour. I LOVE the Dallas boot you say you'll never listent to again. Stevie was rambl;ing shouting random things, wasn't in sync witht he band at times, and I loved that. Let me guess, you probably enjoy that awful TISL tour.
|
lol well I enjoyed TISL, however she sang one two many songs from that record for my taste.
Yeah I know Madonna uses that power tools thing, so does Cher, Shania Twain, and im sure many others. I just watched one of Madonna's NYC shows from last summer again, and 70/80% of songs were sung live, or at least most of them. |

Oh, and by the way -- ;) . By the way, Curtis, is her nosehair as thick as her pit hair in the 'SEX' book? |
And about this whole, who is rock debate. 97 Rock Buffalo's classic rock station doesn't play anything sung by women unless the woman singing is named Ann, Stevie, or pat. So Heart, Stevie Nicks and Pat Benetar are the only rock woman that get any airplay. And the #1 song is Baracuda with the close #2 being Edge of 17. This doesn't count her Fleetwood Mac stuff, and on that note Christine suprisingly is considered rock too with YMLF and World Turning. So Christine McVie is rock and Tina Turner is not.

anyone else attend the mudfest?

And I never said Tina lip-synched, just that she put on a stage show. You know - backup dancers, professional choreography, Tina flying around the audience on floaty platforms. And I think Tina rocks too. :D Quote:

I love the US Festival performance - so many hilarious moments - when she's introducing the band and gets to Sharon - "She's yours, for $20,000!" The girl scout cookies, the quicksand, and "being as overly dramatic as I always am, I have to tell you that Mr. David Bowie is coming up next." What was so dramatic about that? I dunno, but it cracks me up every time.

I love the $20000 comment about Sharon. THat's great. It's also funny how she can't tell left from right!

When I saw Heart back in September, many of their new songs brought tears to peoples eyes. When I last saw Blondie, the crowd was in an altered state after War Child. Show me a crowd that doesn't get emotional after hearing Pat do Hell is For Children. It's all subjective, sure, but don't discount their powers to get an emotional response from a crowd. It's not very fair, IMO, and circumvents reality. :) |

Tell me you were being sarcastic. |

Tina Turner puts on a rock show of epic proportions. She blows ever other female rocker off the stage. She exhausted me. And if anyone can say that the likes of the Wildest Dreams tour was a theatrical show, or that the Private Dancer was more of a theatrical show than the likes of the RAL tour, I'll eat my hat. Let's not judge her entire touring career based on floating platforms. |

Dissention lets go get married shiiit LOL! I saw Tina/Cyndi 5 times in 97. Tina can blow anyone off a fuucking stage1,000 times abnd back. I also had a heart attack when Debbie did War Child (MY FAVORITE HUNTER SONG) in 2002 for the 1st time in 20 years!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S. At the 1st show of 2002, she dedicated it to the 9-11 vicims |

On one of my Blondie boots (7/5/03, I believe), Debs introduces War Child by saying that they decided to do it again after 9/11 and says that those who are really affected by this current ****ty war are the children. I got chills when she did it at one of my shows, the ad-libbed lyrics made the hair on my arms stand up. you weren't discovered by the khmer rouge we hear of "your troubles" on the nightly news plo lovers courting after curfew exploding with terror, they never win or lose the curse of religion, no one wants to choose political favors with a corporate view your fathers and brothers have the west bank blues Debs rawks. :D |
No I agree, in my opinion Tina's energy is unmatched. But Bette Middler, youa ren't going to pass her off as rock. Isn't she sort of like an entertainer who mixes comedy with a few songs mixed in. I've never ever thought of Bette as even musical I always associate her with acting.
