An "outsider's" viewpoint-SS from the Dance
|
It is great that someone that isn't as big of a fan as we all are can see how magical "Silver Springs" is, especially during that first performance of it on The Dance tour. It is a WOW! to everyone I know who has ever seen it, fan or not. It turned one of my friends into a Mac fan after watching The Dance video with me, and of course, she especially liked the "Silver Springs" part. It is just too wonderful!!!! :D
|
That was a great article!!! Thanks for posting..it made me wanna pop the dance in again  :D
|
I'm sooooo throwing The Dance in my DVD player when I get home!
|
I'm with her
I agree with the writer. Why would you put yourself through that? Fame and fortune is great and all, but she's right and she does look furious after 20 years. No one I've talked to that's seen that denys that she looks pissed off! So it's a simple question, but - why did she go back? I don't think I could do it.

I love SS from The Dance, but I also love SS from Boston, I can't decide which one I love more. I guess I love them for different reasons.

SS from the Dance is what sucked me into total FM mania, even though I had been aware of the Mac since I was a teenager. I remember pausing for a moment before passing it by while channel surfing and saying, "who is that poor guy Stevie Nicks is going after?"
When I saw the reference to anger, I remembered two quotes I read from the Stevie Nicks: In her own words website (and, through the magic of the net and the cut and paste option--voila!): In six weeks of rehearsal, it [performing Silver Springs for the MTV special] was never like that...Only on Friday night did we let it go into something deeper. When we went on Friday, I knew we'd bring it out in case it was the last thing we'd ever do. The other shows were really, really good, but they weren't the show I wanted to leave behind. This show was...I wanted people to stand back and really watch and understand what [the relationship with Lindsey] was." ~Stevie Nicks, Arizona Republic, August 12, 1997 Well, since that performance I have to sing Silver Springs to him almost every day, so Lindsey and I get to do and say things that we wouldn't get to say to each other in real life. It's like a release. Even now, we don't talk much, so when those songs come around and are directly involved with our relationship it's very therapeutic to work that stuff out. This way we get to have closure. ~Stevie Nicks, Miami Herald Nov 6, 1997 I've never thought their breakup was as simple as girl dumps boy. Boy is brokenhearted. It's more than suggested by the lyrics of SS that Lindsey was involved with another woman and I've always thought that contributed to things. On the other hand, according to Lindsey, Stevie wanted to "pack up and shack up" as well. Ah, the 70s. All that free love was not so free after all. There was a whole mess of anger around on both sides but I know when I saw Lindsey on some of those behind the scenes tour video boots we have (from Tusk, in particular), he seemed to border on being obnoxious at times (and I'm a big fan and love the man now so don't throw any eggs at me, please;-) They both just grew up but old feelings are old feelings and they don't necessarily ever die. You know that quote we all discussed last week about how they relive their love affair in a concert? Well, SS (from the Dance, especially) could be where they relive the breakup. But, to this day, I think it's the most dramatically awesome performance of a song I've ever heard. |

I can take singers expressing emotion and the like, that's part of their job in order to make the song appealing, in order to sell it. But don't fake it. Fleetwood Mac pretty much fakes everything, from the canned speeches that may have had meaning in the beginning but have now become cliched jokes, all the way down to the ridiculous Landslide bull****. Play the music and emote honestly, don't bull**** us. |

You guys need to go see Lindsey on a solo tour.....oh, wait a minute, Lindsey doesn't have a solo tour, sorry

I do think it sucks that Lindsey delibers possibly the best performance of the night with Come, and Stevie gets monsterous applause for coming on Stage for wearing Red Boots during Gypsy. And I agree with Lux about the way everyone goes on and on about Stevie's shawl at the end of GDW, although I would say GDW ROCKED this tour, because of the way Stevie performed it and the band not the shawl.

Does anyone else interpret the lyrics to Silver Springs as meaning Lindsey cheated on Stevie? I do not think that is what they mean at all..I always thought she was saying, "now that we have broken up and there are other women in your life, I do not want to know about it. I do not want to hear that she loves you or that you think she is pretty and remember you will never get away from me, the woman who really loved you. Maybe I am way off but I do not hear "he cheated on me" in her lyrics. She wrote the song after they had drifted apart and began seeing other people and it hurt..she just did not want to know what he felt for the new women..she wanted to remember what she wanted him to feel for HER. (shining autumn, ocean crashing, only dream, yadda yadda...)
Not a fan of the canned stuff either but alot of the stuff some people see as "canned", I see differently. I hate when people yelled out Stevie's name during the quiet parts of Say Goodbye. SO RUDE! Shut up and listen! Slightly off topic but along the lines of "being rude"....as much as I enjoyed LB's guitar masturbation during the SB intro..I sort of felt it took the attention away from Taku's fantastic percussion. He even edited LIB to include the ladies screaming "go Lindsey...go Lindsey~" If Stevie would have twirled for two or three minutes straight during one of LB's guitar solos or something..Sheebus........ *note ..I thought his moves with the guitar were swoonworthy, he is hot and was really working it but still..kind of rude with his choice of timing and all. |

I can totally understand that. It was very over the top. I felt it went on way too long but still, the man is hot.
Yea it did border on pornographic some nights with the slow rubbing of the guitar in circles ...wow. |

After they broke up, I always figured Stevie kind of went her own way (all puns intented!), happy to be out of a stifling relationship, but not ready to get into another one. Heartbroken Lindsey (I figure) started consoling himself with, perhaps a string of other women, or perhaps just one...
Whatever...my point is that I don't think that SS refers to Lindsey cheating on her...just the different ways they reacted to the break up. And I realize that this breakup was messy and complicated, but I always hate it when people see this performance (which is awesome!) and say, "Oh poor Stevie!" She broke it off with him!!! But anyway... And Lindsey's OOTC show was the best concert experience of my life (yes, over all the FM and Stevie solo tours I've seen), so I certainly need another solo tour. In fact I can't even imagine going to see Stevie solo again unless I can get in the front row, and even that's a maybe. Been there done that... |

I don't think he knew what was coming that night in 1997 when she suddenly turned into the Stevie of old right before his and everyone else's eyes. It was something to behold for sure. |

Purely talking of Stevie and Lindsey as performers, they're both incredible, and they are equally important on stage, IMO. Personally, I'm more drawn by the way she feels the audience and responds to its vibes, the way she sings and communicate. He's a master as guitarist, and his energy is amazing during songs like Come, Big Love, Go Your Own Way, etc, but I tend to prefer the quiet ones, so I look to John. :D ;) Romy |

Eh. I'm an original then;-) I see your point about the women who came after the breakup, but still think it would be natural for a guy (and even the girls of that time) to be like kids in a candy store with all that attention. And she does reference women who will come and go and all that jazz...so, maybe it's my own pet theory that he wasn't entirely immune to other women throwing themselves at him (or her falling for smooth talking musicians from other bands, either). Whatever inspired the song and the anger--it's a great performance of a fabulous song. And, even if one wants to criticize later performances for some canned emotion, the night they taped the Dance was something very, very special and we're lucky to have it captured for all time. |

As for the shawls, etc, I guess I don't mind, but, if Stevie's too old (hip) to pull off the twirling, boots, etc, she should give up that whole schtick. I guess it's hard to be a sex symbol post-menopause. Lasso dance, anyone? |

Well, Stevie wasn't on the stage at that time. It would be a bit boring just to sit and listen to the drum intro. He was fun to watch. I think once she twirled into the scene, he backed off and let her do her thing. |

When Stevie is singing, I don't pay attention to him. I can admit that. He could be naked, dancing with a tomato and I wouldn't know. |

that's actually what he was doing! no, he was doing quite a spirited and distracting dance throughout. :D |
