What do you do (when not posting)?

I get the distinct feeling that some of you have turned posting on the Ledge into your career. Others, like myself, probably have a job only to ignore the actual work component and instead continue posting on the board. In any event (and I really hope I'm not repeating a previous thread), I'm curious as to what everyone here on the board does to earn a living and pay for all of those concerts we've been attending. I'll go first....

I've been working at the Texas Capitol since I was a freshman in college. I didn't have a car, and the Capitol was walking distance from the dorm, so I got a job as a messenger. Then I interned for a state senator for my remaining three years, and after a post-graduating backpacking trip through Eruope two years ago, I came back to work full-time for the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services. After this biennial legislative session, which begins next week and ends in May, I hope to attend grad school to get a masters in public policy and eventually go on to garner world peace. Oh, and I'm single.

GypsySorcerer 01-06-2005 11:46 AM

I'm a full-time graduate student, so I'm on winter break right now. Classes start again next week, so I probably won't be on here as much. (Or at least I shouldn't be.)

I graduate in May, though, so I'm also looking for a job. In fact, I'm sending in a resume today.

DeadliestPoison 01-06-2005 11:49 AM

I'm a Junior in High School. And I'm in Study Hall right now. Woot.

hayley 01-06-2005 11:52 AM

I'm a cog (albeit an important one) in a corporate machine that sells watered-down sex, drugs, and rock and roll in the form of plastic to today's youth.

Blah blah boring jobcakes.

estranged4life 01-06-2005 11:56 AM

In order...

Trade music

Being an Asshole/Smart ass/Smart Aleck/Sarcastic/etc.

Stay sick (Lately, Which sucks ass...But what can ya do?)

Work (Manufacturing...So much fun!)

Trade even more music

GateandGarden 01-06-2005 11:57 AM

I'm an undergrad student on my winter break like Krista. I've been able to spend an insane amount of time on here over the break because I have no schoolwork and no job! :] But classes start again soon for me as well, and I'm going to miss being on here constantly. This place has made my break so fun! :)

ryan8472 01-06-2005 11:59 AM

Well, I have no school today, so I have a lot of time on my hands. Moreso than ususal.

I'm a junior in high school though.

DrummerDeanna 01-06-2005 12:08 PM

I am a reporter/progam host. I work at a public radio station (an NPR member station) - and by day I'm a news reporter, I go out and cover stuff or I do phoners...and then at 4pm - I local host All Things Considered - I fill breaks and do two newscasts per hour - the newscasts aren't too long though - 2.5 -3 minutes long...

So when I'm not out covering stories I am usually sitting at my computer - and therefore check into the Ledge constantly while putting off work..such as right now when I should be pulling soundbytes and writing a story on consumer confidence....BUT the vending machine guy just got here and announced that our coffee machine would be free all day!!!! Woo hoo....it's horrid stuff - but it's free :blob1:

Be Fabulous :p :D :wavey: :D

markolas 01-06-2005 12:33 PM

I work for a life insurance company. Though, I don't have Internet access at work, so if I'm on here, I'm at home. Thankfully however, I only live about five minutes from work, so I usually come home for lunch and get on here then. :D

Usually, if I'm not at work, then I'm home on the computer, either online or playing The Sims 2. I make occasional outings...I go the Austin Zen Center semi-regularly, I go out on a date every once in a blue moon, and I'm no stranger to the Zachary Scott Theatre or the Alamo Drafthouse.

I own 2 businesses and work for a third when my services are needed. My main business involves working with defense contractors and I can’t say much about it. My second business is part time. I’m a process server for a few law firms. I do skip traces on people that refuse to appear in court and I’m one of the guys that come to your door with papers saying you need to appear when no one else can seem to find you. The third involves working with bail bond agents and parole violations officers. I won’t say much about that either.

Keep trying. While you lowly people attempt to be fabulous, I have already mastered the art of being truly divine. Look it up, my picture is next to it. ;) :wavey:

You're the gayest straight guy I've ever met. ;)

dissention 01-06-2005 12:46 PM

I work, of course.

I was supposed to have a few months off, but I got roped into coming back early. And I've been in the office more times in the past two weeks than I have been in two years. Most of the time, I work from home because it's easier to get stuff done here. I hate the computers in the office and their CAD software sucks ass. Not to mention the fact that the place is always at a subzero temperature.

I rob banks.

Sesly tho, I work at home, doing data entry...boooooring job, but I love it, because I get to be where I am most comfy and don't have to answer to an assy boss.

Mari 01-06-2005 01:26 PM

I'm ... uh... a bookkeeper...
Didn't train to be one, just happened to roll into it after I dropped out of sociology studies. Maybe I'll get my degree one day (uh yeah, when pigs fly!) and become a uh... sociologist. Whatever that may be.

HomerMcvie 01-06-2005 03:48 PM

I do sound for bands, and also play in a band. An average week is 2-3 days, so I've got lots of free time. I've got a few rental properties that I take care of, too. All the free time is great in the summer, but it gets a little boring in the winter....

amber 01-06-2005 03:50 PM

Do? Not Posting? what are these things?????
I work as an admin. However, this is the only job i've ever had where there is almost nothing to do. I hate it. If i condensed all the work i do in a normal day, it would probably take me 1 hour, 1.5 tops. Of course, I can't work like that. I have to sit here all day for when the phone rings  Luckily, I don't feel bad, cause my pay is commensurate with the amount of work...
I'm in school right now for paralegal studies. well, not right now, but, currently. Soon, I will have a better job.
I think it would be cool to work for a PI, though. I want to learn how to do skip traces! :D But, working for a PI is probably more fun in my head then in real life.
I drink and go out with my friends and sing and watch TV and do schoolwork and read and eat when i'm not posting. during various points of the year I go to chico.
I'm also waiting to inherit something...
When my income increases, what i will be doing when i'm not posting is TAKING FRICKING TRIPS!!!! I gotta get outta here!!!! help!!!!

For now, I work as a dietary aid at a nursing home. I basically make sure the patients get everything they need during their meals, deliver meals, pick up trays, do all the dishes, sometimes clean the kitchen. Nothing too strenuous. But I hate it anyways. And I have to work at 4:30. Ugh.

That's quite admirable. Most people would turn up their noses at that kind of job. Helping the elderly has to give you some kind of personal satisfaction.

ontheEdgeof17 01-06-2005 04:01 PM

I'm in my last semester of Nursing school (BSN baby). I'm in the process of looking for a job and getting the hell outta dodge.

I had an aunt try to get me into doing that when I was in High School(as a part time job). When I heard some of the things they HAD to do, (when I heard stories about cleaning feces off of walls), I quickly declined. More power to ya!

If your great personality here is anything like your personality in real life, those elderly people are fortunate to have you and you being there will make a better person later in life !!!!!!! :woohoo:

(I sound like my parents   - but am sincere  )

I agree. Old people make me really sad, though, but i would get tons of satisfaction from helping them.

StevieNicksEO17 01-06-2005 04:09 PM

I am also a Junior in high school...Whoa two other people are Juniors! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! No job for me or anything. Just school, friends, colorguard practice and the computer :)

SuzeQuze 01-06-2005 04:29 PM

I edit computer-type manuals (text books  ) for a publishing firm. I usually get a chapter a day and I go through the steps as written, with the software/hardware, make notes on errors as necessary, and then submit a report. Sometimes it seems boring, another day another chapter. But I learn so much, every single day I learn something new. I wish my company would give me a degree for that! I got mine in psych a "while" back, hehe.

I hop online while installing stuff, when I have an easier chap that didn't take too long, or when I am just plain procrastinating (right now), hi Deanne, hehe :wavey:

Oh and Amber, I feel your pain, I used to do admin work and the downtime drove me crazy. Sometimes there is downtime here but notsomuch right now.

This is an interesting thread!

Serrart 01-06-2005 04:54 PM

I'm a reporter for a small movie magazine. :)
