your favourite sitcom characters..

(or general TV characters, if you don't like sit-coms).

who is funny and why?

I was reading somewhere that Stevie's favourite shows include General Hospital (I've never had the pleasure- it isn't shown here-, but know it's a daytime soap) and i remember she used to use the treadmill while watching Miami Vice -I wasn't there.. I just read that ;) I never really "got" Miami Vice... too busy watching Moonlighting and LA Law, I guess. I wonder what Stevie watches these days...?

anyway... my favourite sitcom characters would be:

Peter Griffin from The Family Guy, because he's hilarious and obnoxious and the show itself is so clever and has great parodies. One of my favourites is when he gets plastic surgery - "Peter! Did you get a new buttocks?!"

and I love David Brent (The Office). He's a perfect character, I think. There are loads of others but these two just come to mind.

 thank god for the sitcom

GateandGarden 01-05-2005 12:33 AM

I kind of stole this from the perv thread, but I've always been very fond of both Mary and Rhoda on "Mary Tyler Moore." They're a couple of my all-time faves.

ontheEdgeof17 01-05-2005 12:38 AM

Jack and Karen

Ally McBeal

Debbie from QAF

Rose, Blanche, Dorothy, Sophia

Definitely. I'd also have to add Sam and Diane from Cheers and Kevin and Winnie from the Wonder Years. I'm still pissed they didn't end up together.

Johnny Stew 01-05-2005 12:41 AM

Mary Richards ('Mary Tyler Moore Show')
Will Truman ('Will & Grace')
Antonio ('Wings')
Suzanne Sugarbaker ('Designing Women')
Fran Fine ('The Nanny')
All of the 'Golden Girls'

I watch too much of the Lifetime Network. :o
Or, as my brother calls it, "Television for women -- and gay men."

Is it wrong that I always thought Kevin should have ended up with PAUL on 'Wonder Years,' or that I would have rather seen Cory marry Shaun, on 'Boy Meets World,' instead of Topanga? :o

sunmaiden 01-05-2005 12:43 AM

Oh yes, Designing Women, Golden Girls
I'd have to add Lavern and Shirley to that! And the ONE AND ONLY LUCY!

hayley 01-05-2005 12:45 AM

I'm with you on David Brent! Jesus. I can't watch the Office without getting a stomach ache from laughing so hard.

I'm not one for nostalgia, so my favorite sitcom character is current- Gob on Arrested Development. Will Arnett is brilliant. Seriously brilliant.

 Well, Winnie could have married Wayne, I guess.

I was in love with Fred Savage as a kid. REALLY obsessed.

Little Nicki 01-05-2005 12:48 AM

1.Stewie from family guy
2. Cartman from South Park
3. Lisa Simpson...or any of the simpsons for that matter

sunmaiden 01-05-2005 12:49 AM

I don't really watch any new sitcoms. There are only a few shows I watch anymore...I am usually listening to music instead.

GypsySorcerer 01-05-2005 12:49 AM

Forgot a couple:
Jack and Chrissy (Three's Company)
Barney Fife (Andy Griffith)
Those two slutty sisters of Just the Ten of Us

I love Eric from "That 70s Show," too. I think he's hilarious.

sunmaiden 01-05-2005 12:52 AM

I can't believe I forgot Janet and Chrissy! Oh yeah- Patsy and Edwina

Every life needs some levity, Lux. Sometimes there's nothing better than laughing like a fool at some absolutely ridiculous sitcom.
It's good for the soul. (And don't use this opportunity to tell me you don't have a soul -- I know better. :p)

Mentioning Basil Fawlty, reminded me of three of my other favorite sitcom characters... Mrs. Slocombe, Hyacinth Bucket ("it's BOUQUET"), and D.I. Derek Grim ('Thin Blue Line').

I tend to hate sitcoms. The only comedies on TV I regularly watch are Arrested Development and Scrubs, which I don't generally put in that category. Historically, I hate...um, pretty much all sitcoms. HATE Everybody Loves Raymond and that ilk, HATE Seinfeld, am COMPLETELY ambivalent towards Friends, etc. So, oddly enough, I'm with you Lux. I tend to get icked out over canned laugh tracks and watered-down humor.

sunmaiden 01-05-2005 01:04 AM

I used to love Will & Grace, but rarely watch it anymore. Funny, though, my EX-best friend (gay) and I used to just happen to catch it all the time when we were watching TV together. I do miss it though

There are some sitcoms that I absolutely despise... many other I can at least tolerate for a couple of laughs. Others I absolutely ADORE and can't get enough of.

'Scrubs' is definitely in the latter category, and I can't wait for the (so far unscheduled) DVD releases.

But I also like 'Raymond' (most of the time) and loved 'Friends.'
'Seinfeld' is a show I had pretty much lost interest in by the time it was cancelled (ironically, I was the first person in my circle of friends to watch it... back when it was called 'The Seinfeld Chronicles'... and I had told everyone else about it).

Life can be such a bitch sometimes, that I just want to watch something goofy and have a laugh. :)

Zach Braff said in his blog this summer that the DVDs would be coming out once the show hits syndication, after this season or next? I dunno. I came in on it only in the last year or so, and there's a lot I want to catch up on and see. Including the episodes with Scott Foley, who is one of my fantasy boyfriends. (along with you, Stewy :xoxo: ;) )

Besides the much-missed occasional ER, the only shows I watch anymore are Nip/Tuck, The Dead Zone, X-Files, 24...and uhh....I hate to admit it, but Battle of The Sexes! Although I vehemently despise reality TV shows...

sunmaiden 01-05-2005 01:13 AM

I was about to start on SNL characters...yeah Pat! haha!!! I was always a MCGallagher fan. And always a big fan of Rosanna Danna. Can't forget the Guy That Lives In A Van Down By The River

Amber, that is so funny!
Seinfeld is my favorite show of all time. Followed CLOSELY by Married, with Children. I think people tend to shun MWC because it seems to cater to the lowest common denominator. I watched "Little Giants" tonight, just because I needed a fix of Ed O'Neill!
So, my votes are:
#1 Michael Richards
#2 Ed O'Neill
#3 Amanda Bearse (Marcy D'Arcy was the perfect foil!)
#4 Jerry Seinfeld
IMO, Jason Alexander, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus(sp) aren't that funny.....they are great though, playing the bitter ****s interacting with the comedians in the show.

paperdoll 01-05-2005 01:55 AM

In no particular order...Patsy and Edina, Megan Mullally, Hyacinth Bucket, Carrie and Doug Heffernen and Charlene Fraizer-Stillfield (Designing Women).

--Amy

sunmaiden 01-05-2005 02:00 AM

Yeah my gay male EX-friend and I were totally like Patsy and EDINA. I was Edina...except he wasn't gettin' it like Patsy was...slut! I think I could almost be Eddy's twin, except for the gaudy clothes!
