It is a Tusk era song. There are a few studio demos/outtakes out there. One outtake I call 'offkey' is so horrible! Stevie sounds awful :lol: It makes me laugh.


I love this song a lot. The main reason I do is because it is along the same vein as The Chain.

I think there are several studio versions of FireFlies. Maybe not, I'll have to check. I love the song on the live album, though!!

I think the version on LIVE can be considered the song's studio version since it really was never performed live, it was recorded new for the album.

And it's absolutely one of her BEST songs. I always forget it because of it not being on any album, but when I remeber it, it's easily in my top 10 Stevie songs. It's amazing. I think it's a more poetic band song then The Chain (which is great but more obvious)

I'm curious about these studio versions. I've heard a couple of different takes from the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium rehearsals -- Chris, for example, switches back & forth between organ & grand piano from one performance to the next. But I've never heard a "Fireflies" with Fleetwood Mac that was specifically tracked in a studio. Do these recordings really exist?

I cannot say how much I adore Fireflies. Unfortunately, I only have the version from the Live album.

Oh I love this song, it's one of my favorite of the "Tusk"-era songs. I particularly love this one demo I have of it, with Stevie singing along rather slowly while the piano plays. It's short, but I always laugh when I hear Stevie say in kind of a pleading voice "I think I need some water.."

The stiletto cuts quick, like a whip through the air...

LOVE this song! I'm with Hawkeye, definitely in my Top 10 (when I remember it.) Great to sing along to!

The only line that is odd to me is the "like a sailing ship, not one of us runs." :shrug: Who knew ships could get up and run.

that line is an example I think of her ability to say many things with a simple statement.

Is it:

not one of us runs away

or

not one of us runs (operates) the ship (presumably the machinery of FM)

or

some other meaning

I think she is brilliant when she does this.

And the "offkey" version is just too funny - a must for any lover of this song :) While funny, it is almost painful to listen to!

She just slaps two lines out of her poetry books and makes a lyric.....and we tend to look into it further than what she meant it to be.

Good points, though....I like the "operation theory". That might be mine from now on :woohoo:

Didn't Mick Fleetwood still run the band at the time?

Also, when does everybody think those Santa Monica Civic Auditorium recordings were made? I think it was a rehearsal for the last leg of the tour, so at some point in June or July 1980.

I agree Mick was in charge at the time, apparently to everyone's later chagrain. But, I think she is being romantic here and visualizing FM as this big ship they are on and though they may try to guide it, it has a life of its own when the five get together and that life/ship guides itself, which was into superstardom.

Then again, she could been wasted and wrote "that's why I wear my hair in a bun" and when recording thought in a haze that she had to run, but it came out "not one of us runs" :laugh: :laugh: :laugh:

I think she meant "no one of us runs from the firelight" -- the fireflies in Fleetwood Mac stay put. In an interview a few months before, she said, "No one leaves Fleetwood Mac. No one will let go" (Jim Ladd Innerview 1979).

Yes Mick was in charge as long as Stevie, LB and Chris let him. (in that order)

I love this song too! I'm always switching back and forth between Fireflies and Gypsy as my favorite Stevie FM song. I think of this song as a better reflection of FM rather than The Chain.

I don't know... I think quiet, unassuming Christine had more influence in that band than we may think. :nod:

For years I thought she sang: "Like a sailing ship, tossed upon the rocks"
I think I finally found the lyrics in a music book and was surprised.
