Friend is still playing!

I did my grocery shopping this morning & I heard "Friend" in the store! It still must be getting played. I wasn't exactly in the greatest mood to start out, but it made shopping a total pleasure this morning. :)

Ahh...that does my heart good. Sadly, i've not heard it while out but pretty soon i'm going to need another CD...i'm playing this one out

Christine was on my local classic rock station (Rock 102) on Wednesday morning giving an interview.

She said that they went into the studio before the inauguration and re-recorded "Don't Stop." Now I'm surprised that this "new" version hasn't been leaked. She also said that they tried desperately to get her to perform Don't Stop with them in England, but she didn't want to. Then she said that they put on a great show and that she felt proud to have been in the band.

Hmm....well, perhaps in the future it will be. Maybe not a lot of people were aware of this? She's trying to seperate herself from the band in a retirement sense. I have a feeling that had she performed with them that night, she may have gotten nostalgic and had some regrets about no longer being in the band which is what she didn't want to do. JMO, of course.

I don't think she was afraid that she'd feel nostalgic about performing again. She's mentioned in several interviews that it had just been too many years since she'd played live. I don't think she felt comfortable doing it. She's also mentioned that when she saw them perform again she knew she'd made the right decision, didn't miss it at all & was happy with her decision.

This is something that I don't understand. I'd never heard that they recorded another version of "Don't Stop" until she mentioned it in several interviews this year. When they performed "Don't Stop" at the inauguration, they did do it live. I wonder why they felt they needed to re-record "Don't Stop" prior to doing it at the inauguration.

Perhaps they re-recorded it, fearing that some rights issue or something would prevent the original recording from being re-released as a single? Doesn't seem likely that that would be the case, but who knows?

I've checked my "Don't Stop" cassette single from '93 though, and it's definitely the original 'Rumours' album version.

I wonder if all five members took part in the re-recording.

Maybe they were going to lip-synch a "live sounding" version of the song.

You're too cute, Curtis.
I wasn't bashing Ashlee... they've ALL lip-synched or used backing tracks at one time or another. Ashlee just made the mistake of claiming she'd never do it, and then blaming her hapless band when it was proven she had.

She still has an infinitely better voice than her sister, and I've liked the couple singles I've heard. :)

'Sides, I thought it was common knowledge that Britney lip-synchs most of the time?

She does, but I guess it is okay because she shows her tits and bends over so her ass hangs out.

NicksIllume 01-02-2005 06:42 PM

Ew...B.S. mentioned in a C.McVie thread. Where's the throwing up icon?

I adore Friend, but I haven't heard it on the radio or anywhere. I'll have to start requesting it. ;) When I watch LIB, I do not watch Don't Stop. I cannot do it.

I think it's just that Britney has never gone on record as saying, "I do not lip-synch and never will," before she got up on stage and did exactly that... so people haven't made as big of a deal about it.

Though the trampy persona probably helps! ;)

She had more fish to fry. She had to lie about her virginity status instead :p
....and she can stay with the phoney singing...she majorly sucks.

This is Hillary being dissention: WTF? Jessica may not be great, but she is way better at singing than her sister. Ashlee is completely talentless. "Pieces of Me" shows us what? That she knows the days of the week? That she can churn out the same shallow cliches as other pop singers? And what does "LaLa" show us? I can't even begin to describe that one. It's one of the worst things I've heard in a long time. We sit around the dormitory and make fun of every lyric of that song. It's that bad. I think my favorite line is "You can dress me up in dirt." The girl has no talent. And she sucked on "7th Heaven," too.

I have to quit allowing dissention to type up parts of my posts. :o Had that been in my words, I would have been much kinder and I would've stressed several times that it was all JMO. :) :wavey:

Anyway, back to the lovely Christine. I was very psyched this week because I heard "Friend" in Sears and Quiznos. :blob2:

I'm ashamed to say this, but I don't know what it means when people say "<333" and such. I've been staring at post after post with that combination of symbols and numbers and I'm just baffled. What does that mean?

You're a Gloria Estefan fan? :] I love her!

Okay, here's my list of cheesy pop singers I love. Some are much better than others but I love (or loved) them all.

Celine
Gloria
Christina (first two albums)
Britney (first three albums)
Shakira
Cher
Savage Garden
Darren Hayes

Oh, it's a heart! When did people start using that? How behind the times am I?

I love Celine but I can't pay that much to see her. I think it costs even more than a Mac concert, doesn't it?

I'm very fond of a lot of the tracks on Darren's solo debut. Some are just silly to me, like "Heart Attack." But some of them are really, really fun and others are great ballads. I don't like the writing as much now that he's not with Daniel (something about it was better), but he's good in his own right. There's a major difference, though--he rambles. His solo songs are kind of like Stevie solo songs in that he'll do the chorus eight times at the end and play with the song (think "Wild Heart," though there may be better examples). Sometimes I like this and sometimes I don't. It's just something Darren does. I love "Insatiable," "Strange Relationship," "Like it Or Not," "Crush (1980 Me), "What You Like" and some others. I totally played some of it out when it first came out. I think you woud really enjoy most, if not all of it. :)

*Disclaimer: These Are My OPINIONS*

Ashlee Simpson is a hack, just like her sister (who cracked me up by trying to make it look like she was hitting the high notes on Divas Live that Miss Cyndi and Miss Labelle were actually singing). I can easily diss any artist who writes their own music if I think it's utter crap. Writing a song does not equal writing a good song. Writing a song does not equal having talent. Her music is cheesy as all hell and in one of the ****ty songs I've heard, she says she wants to be dressed up in dirt. Unfortunately, that's not possible since all the dirt in the world is on skanky Miss "I Wanna Be Dirt-tay" Aguilera, but that's not the point. Point is, she writes inane and cliched songs. Her voice is average and she has no sense of style that distinguishes her from any other pop tart in the current market. Cheese is cheese. If you like cheese, more power to ya. But I'd prefer seeking out music that has artistic merit and that has a bit more depth to it than "dress me up in dirt," or whatever the hell the lip-syncher says. But, then again, I'm a fancy-pants elitist. :p

No, Blondie isn't cheese. What separates Blondie from crap like Asslee Simpson is that their material has true artistic merit and has been incredibly influential in the history of music. They were almost alien in their genius and the reason their classic songs hold up so well, like them or not, is because they were lightyears ahead of their peers and their time. Think of the periods in which those songs were released and it's rather chilling how brilliant they were as a band, IMO.

I'd like to see Miss Simpson tackle all the genres Blondie has. She'd fall flat on her ass.

It takes a lot of musical talent and artistry, the level of which Ashlee Simpson has yet to display, to create perfect pop music as Blondie has. Debbie Harry is also an infinitely more talented, versatile, and charismatic singer and performer than Ashlee Simpson. Debbie Harry is light-years more attractive than Ashlee, too, but that's another story completely...Oh, and Blondie trumps any of Simpson's music in an instrumental sense. I wonder what Jimmy Destri could do with all those interesting keyboard textures if he were to work with Stevie Nicks... :wavey:

I agree.

As much as I'd love to see any sort of collaboration between Stevie and a member of Blondie, though, it would be a match made in hell. Could you imagine her trying to keep up with them?

I also enjoy some cheese from time to time. Got Ashlee's CD for Xmas. I don't think she's on her way to being a music legend, but she's not bad, IMO. Catchy tunes.

I never minded Jessica's singing until I caught a glimpse of her on that damned Xmas special - Godawful! It was disurbing. I kept thinking "OMG, will she be pissed if they get any still-shots from this." Her facial expressions & arm movements were beyond distracting, I thought she was going to have a seizure. And I will never forget her terrible rendition of "With You" on the AMA's (I think?) - they got a shot of Sheryl Crow watching her, expressionless, then she just looked away & started looking around the room/the ceiling/ anything except Jessica. Priceless.

That being said, I haven't heard Friend AT ALL here, dammit!

Jessica has the better voice in a technical way, but I prefer Ashlee's style (I can't believe I'm debating the merits of the Simpson Sisters).

A steady, straightforward, sincere singing style (God, I love alliteration) pleases my ears FAR more than the technically proficient singers who make it a point to SHOW us exactly how proficient they are at every turn.
