Whose singing voice would you want?

List ten rock singers whose singing voices make you wish you sounded just like that. Keep it to rock, otherwise everyone will be showing off pretentiously by listing Harve Presnell or Ileana Cotrubas. So whose singing voice would you want?

3. Brian Setzer
4. Smokey Robinson
5. Roland Orzabal
6. Eddie LeVert
7. Holly Johnson
8. Maurice White
9. Paul McCartney

I agree - but mine can sound soooo trained  so.....

I LOVE Michael Stipe. His voice is so raw and his pain is apparent.

I also LOVE James Taylor - though his range is non-existent IMO.

Finally - Axel Rose - he can just deliver with a vengence.

There are really so many though - and all mentioned are superb.

irishgrl 01-02-2005 09:27 AM

voice envy

I already sound Like Stevie Nicks (true! same range and huskiness)
Janis Joplin (the female version of Axel Rose)
Judy Garland (I know she's not rock but everyone knows who she is)
Ann/Nancy Wilson from Heart (does that count as 2?)
Steve Perry (awesome set of pipes he's got!)
Freddie Mercury (same here!)
Meat Loaf
Grace Slick
and just for ****s and giggles: GENE SIMMONS!

Gypsy-Rhiannon 01-02-2005 09:31 AM

The only people I would love to sound like are Karen Carpenter and Judy Garland

Kate- have you heard any of her Jazz Passengers stuff? I sing, too, and that stuff is remarkable to sing; it really works out your voice. I like to warm-up with Angel Eyes and Pork Chop before I sing, they're perfect.

She did in the Titanic theme and in Its All Coming Back to me Now - other than that - her voice is perfection but lackluster emotionally - I also think it has to do with she looks like she is tryinbg unrinate while standing when she performs live

Unfortunately, I haven't. I'm trying to find some of it, though. I heard a clip of one of the songs she does with the Passengers on the Blondie Behind the Music DVD, and I really liked what I heard. :)

Neko Case
Sam Phillips
Patti Scialfa

Fiona Apple

I always thought she looked like she wanted to prevent a laxative from taking effect until she left the stage. :woohoo:

I've yet to hear a song where any emotion comes through. She sounds so technically perfect and sterile all the time that it's almost inhuman.

As far as I know, Amazon.com has a free MP3 download of "Doncha Go Way Mad," her duet with Elvis Costello. HOWEVER - while it is a fantastic song, it is so not representative of her and the Jazz Passengers. Their albums are the kind where you have to hear a little before buying because it's a very acquired taste. Most of it is very experimental and off-the-wall. I've seen her with them live and that is an experience. They're almost 100% improvisational live, coming up with lyrics and songs off the top of their heads.

Here's a link to the free song and some minute-long clips (and it's their best album, too):

LOL - a little like La Nicks and the current ending GDW back to the audience squat  - I will NEVER for get the forst Dallas concert when upon viewing that pose, the very drunk, large sensible gal simultaneously elbows me and her girlfriend and shrieks in a think Texan accent "she looks like she is taking a *&^^&&"

As for Celine - I truly think her voice is so musically perfect, she cannot inflect and/or infuse with emotion. I still like some of her stuff though

David Bowie can't sing.. Listen to him, he is talking over music. Actually, I think that's been on of his "hooks" in his career..
I think he is a great songwriter and all, but as a singer...no way!

Well, people I admire for their vocal abilities:

Peter Gabriel
Darren Hayes
Chris Lowe (from Pet Shop Boys)
Stevie Nicks
Billy Joel
Tracy Chapman (just...special, that's all)
George Michael
Sting
Elton John

Hmm, that's all I can think of right now..

Life On Mars?
Sunday?
Slow Burn?
Five Years?
Ziggy Stardust?
China Girl?
Heroes?
Hallo Spaceboy?
Bring Me the Disco King?
Heathen (The Rays)?
The Man Who Sold the World?
The Loneliest Guy?
Cactus?
Lady Stardust?

Surely you jest, my friend! He can sing with the best of them and the emotion in his voice is breathtaking. Grab his new concert DVD, he's f*cking brilliant in that thing. It's worth it for his take of Life On Mars alone.
