:distress: Brings a tear to my eye. It's ashame how nature can cause mass destruction like that and not think twice about it.

Ugh....that's horrific. Thanks for posting. :distress:

strandinthewind 12-29-2004 08:49 PM

I cannot even imagine what that was like. AND - in that one where the diver is running - no one else is really alarmed. Scary - VERY SCARY - thanks for posting!!!!

holy crap.

A lot of people seem to be staring at the wave. Id pake a peek and run like hell. I feel so bad for all these peeps.

sara1998 12-29-2004 10:28 PM

Now THAT gives you a more realistic impression of what happened there. This is truely an eye opener, since you can't really begin to imagine what it was like. God love those people.
Thanks for posting.

I'm watching the ABC special right now--breaks my heart because even though you can be moderately warned, with a natural distaster such as this, there really is nothing you can do :(

Simply awful :(

Jessica Leigh 12-30-2004 02:02 AM

simply terrible... absolutely awful..... but honestly i believe these things happen for a reason... either to control overpopulation or something.... God has some plan.... even though we may not understand it.... i feel awful for these people- maybe this catastrophe is to teach people (such as the India indians) a lesson; subscribe to the tsunami warning thing based in hawaii.... they would have known about the tsunami 90 mins before it hit....

has anyone seen the satellite photos from right before the tsunami hit? its waves and masses of swirly white foam are crazy.... i grew up in Socal (5 miles inland) and have seen my share of swirly white foam from the ocean... but these tsunami photos are crazy scary....

estranged4life 12-30-2004 03:00 AM

I saw those on the news tonight, It was weird to see the beachfront disappear then reappear later as if nothing ever happened.

I'll take our F5 scale (Winds up to 316MPH) Oklahoma tornadoes anyday of the week over a tsunami...

I can't say a word, after watching those pics.

Do you know I can't find a f***ing site in Peru where I can give a collaboration? The peruvian red cross website doesn't say a word!!!! Do I have to send a transfer to a foregin country??? It's a shame!!!

tynan88 12-30-2004 10:34 AM

I think what shocked me even more was that in yesterdays paper they had photos of some of the dead Australians in there, including several young children, just terrible, and makes you think more because it is so close to home.

It's events like this that make me suspect more and more that there is no god, at least not one that did anything more than create the universe and then leave it to its own devices. Even that (like all spiritual matters) is arguable. Either way, I've decided that I can't be comfortable with revering a deity that can allow these things to happen. I'm thinking either life is a game or it isn't. I believe the latter. If I'm to be a puppet taken from this earth by some insane natural disaster without warning and for no apparent reason, it seems like someone is playing a game. And I don't find it the least bit amusing. I'd rather think no one is in control if that's the case.

And that is all my opinion and my cynicism showing through. It is not meant to criticize anyone else's beliefs. Those are merely ideas of mine and I am a fallible human being.

But something I'm certain of is that there's no way in hell I'd tell someone who lost his or her entire family to this catrastrophe that it was "all part of God's plan." In fact, I would have absolutely nothing insightful at all to offer that person because I cannot begin to comprehend what that person is going through. (I'm not implying that you would say that, Jessica; this isn't directed at you. I hope it doesn't come off like that).

GateandGarden 12-30-2004 10:54 AM

We're on the same page, Lux. Just wanted to say that I feel the same way.

tynan88 12-30-2004 11:02 AM

Thats very good Lux, I m religious though and believe as hard as it is sometimes everything has its place. By India Indians too I think it is meant as oppposed to Native Americans, as not much is taught about them I think.

These photos are very hard to see knowing my grandparents spend so much time in Thailand, we have a strong connection to Thailand, my uncle who died in February had lived in Thailand for last ten years with his boyfriend, I suspect he died of AIDS related diseases but no one will tell me, but so yer, I feel in particular a strong connection with Thailand, as do most Australians with this region, I mean Australia is in Asia! We are part of this, if this Earthquake had happened a bit further south (I mean even fourty fifty kilometres), it coulda possibly wiped out Perth on our west coast, a large city.

I haven't seen the satellite photos (if you have a link, could you post?) but 12:00am Sunday, leaving my uncle's house after Christmas stuff, I said "HOLY. ****." I am a big astronomy person so i'm constantly looking at the moon, stars, etc. At the time I walked outside, the moon was directly overhead and there was a HUGE ring around the moon--very bizarre. We all stood there for a few moments and stared at it. I didn't think much more about it at the time other than the fact that it was pretty odd but now i'm wondering if it wasn't an effect of the tsumani and earthquakes that probably would have been occuring at that time over in Asia. Anyone else see the ring around the moon that evening?

I can't either Lux. I don't want to hide from the reality of this tragedy, but there is a limit to what the human mind can take, IMO.

BTW, some Americans do refer to "Native Americans" by their traditional names (Cherokee, Seneca, etc.) But you're right, most don't.

That totally blows my mind--I cannot even fathom that. The power of nature, although devistating, truly is amazing. I mean, the speed at which a tsunami travels---the fact that it would take a mere 24 hours to travel from one side of the Pacific to the other (they were saying that on a news program) is absolutely insane.

I did. I was leaving to go to a party Christmas night and as soon as I stepped outside I noticed the ring around the moon. Like you guys, my mom and I stared at it for a few moments then went and got into the car. A couple minutes later, my brother finally joined us in the car and the first thing out of his mouth was, "Did you see that ring around the moon?" It was very strange -- we'd never seen anything like it.

wondergirl9847 12-30-2004 12:48 PM

Cool...

Interesting about the moon, wish I had seen that.

Anyways, these things (tsunami, war, etc.) are discussed in the Bible...read Revelations. Bad things will happen in the end times, and I feel we are in them right now. I know lots of people think that's a crock, but I believe it.

My grandfather use to tell my mom things when she was a kid about how in the future, people wouldn't need money anymore, they would have cards with information on them (we are going towards that now with debit cards) and just various things about what he felt would happen in the future. He said these things in the 60's. My grandfather was a very interesting man and he died way too young of a heart attack when I was 6. :( I wish I could have known him better and talked to him about stuff.

I think i'll check out a few places to find whether or not the earthquake and tsunami were the cause. Didn't they say that Earth's movement was effected? (I think I remember hearing that but I may be wrong).

Awesome!

Miracle girl survives tsunami on a door

Wed Dec 29,12:35 PM ET

NEW DELHI, India (AFP) - Meghan Rajshekhar, 13, disappeared along with 77 other people when the giant tsunami struck an Indian air force base by the sea on the remote Car Nicobar island.

Locals found her walking in a daze along the beach on Tuesday after clinging to a door on the stormy seas for two days, the Hindustan Times reported Wednesday.

The air force officer's daughter and her parents were swept away along with countless thousands others as a massive earthquake off neighbouring Indonesia sent tsunami crashing across the Indian ocean.

"She told defence personnel that she had cried out 11 times when choppers hovered over the ocean in search of survivors on Sunday," the daily quoted a flight lieutenant Bhandarkar as saying.

"No one spotted her."

But Meghna, badly bruised, told rescuers she knew which direction land lay and just kept floating on towards the shore.

"In the end it was the waves that washed so many thousands of others away that washed her ashore," the Hindustan Times said.

"This was a miracle in the midst of the disaster the tsunami wrought," the air base station commander V. V. Bandhopadhyay told the Press Trust of India.

The miracle girl also had to keep an eye out for numerous sea snakes.

Meghna was taken to the Andamans capital Port Blair and on to relatives in Hyderabad after medical treatment, Lieutenant Governor Ram Kapse said.

"Her parents, sadly, haven't survived."

The 76 others are still reported missing.

PTI said 100 people perished at the base.

At least 4,000 lost their lives on the Andamans chain of 572 islands, but many thousands more are feared dead, officials say, as rescuers struggle to reach remote islands.

Car Nicobar was very badly hit and the air base severely damaged.

The Nicobar group lies about 150 kilometres (90 miles) from Sumatra.

The Andamans, 1,200 kilometres (745 miles) from mainland India, are spread over 800 kilometres (500 miles) with a population of about 350,000.

I agree - The Bible is replete with stories of these things happening in the end times. But, all scientists are saying that although this incident is horrible, there has been no increase in the number of events in the last few years. So, if there are to be more in the end times, then this event and the events of the last few decades, while certainly horrible and catastrophic, are not out of the ordinary

Note: Christy - I know you know I am not belittling your beliefs by saying this - I am just pointing out that there has, as of yet, been no increase. What the future holds - well no one but God can tell that  - thus, your point :)

Yes, the earths movement was microscopically and insignificantly affected - basically because the earthquake made the Earth more compact. This is not a huge thing and it ordinarily happens in large quakes like this one

The Next 100 years predictions by Sylvia Browne

I was reading Sylvia Browne's web site last week and it's interesting to read her predictions. She had metioned Tsunamis wiping out most of Japan. I don't believe we are upon the end of time. But who am I to say. Below are her predicitons.

http://www.sylvia.org/home/2000plus.cfm

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Eradication of cancer as we know it, using sound waves, photo sensitive drug therapy, and "self-addicting" cells.

Robotic houses, controlled by computerized switchboard.

Electrical cars with flotation ability for water travel to bypass freeways.

Houses made from pressed paper with plastic coatings; interchangeable walls
Separate body parts cloned for organ transplants; not an entire body.

New form of painless tooth extraction, using a type of suction, with immediate replacement of new tooth.

Diagnostic chambers which map the body's electrical balance to predict health problems before the come.

Cylindrical rooms in which people enter to see an automated projection of the clothing and color that would look good on them; select what you want, take your measurements, then two days later pick up the goods.

Third floor of houses have rollback roofs to allow Hovercrafts to come and go.
No more surgery with knives. Some type of molecular ionization device that knows how to take out the afflicted cells then seal the wound without a single scar.

Remolding of the whole face structure, to duplicate any look that you wish.
New exercise equipment that you sit or stand in, and it literally stimulates your muscles with electricity to achieve the same effect as physical exercise.
Babies will be birthed in water all the time, with music, incense, and green and lavender lights.

People will be able to simply "walk out" of their bodies upon death.
There will be no US Presidency; our government will go back to a Greek Senate structure.

No longer a single Pope, but a triumvirate of Popes, each assigned to a geographic collection of Catholics.

Peace in the Middle East will prevail by 2050.

West Coast goes under in 2026. Parts of the East Coast also get inundated.
Tsunamis will wipe out a large portion of Japan. The Hawaiian Islands will have upheaval and be the site of a large new landmass.

Atlantis will begin to show itself by 2023 and be fully visible by 2026.

After 2050, the "Age of the Messiah" is upon us. People turn totally toward Spirituality, peace will rein for a long time. People will return to community living, loving each other, and working together.

Treatment for depression and mood disorders will come from a "control chamber" that emits sensory stimulation gently to the brain, including certain smells, which will elevate mood.

Medicine in pill form goes away; instead we have air-injected delivery through the skin.

Atomic batteries will run cars.

No more gas propelled rockets in space; we will have nuclear powered cylinder shaped objects that travel everywhere.

A moon base is created for people to visit, and as a stopping place for further trips.

By 2055 most people will live in domed cities due to poor atmospheric conditions.

A virtual reality headset will stimulate brain waves so people can learn whole libraries of information within hours.

Giant fruits and vegetables will be grown in hothouse environments. The nutrients will be synthesized into a highly condensed injection.

Proteins are developed without animal meat, very powerful, builds immune system.

Addictions will be a thing of the past because of a brain stimulation, which eradicates all addictions, with no side effects.

Execution for the death penalty will become a complete vaporization of the body.

No separate governments, one planetary government will form.

Great earth changes will occur and germ warfare will be used before the world finds peace. But eventually from all of the bad comes good. The pendulum will swing back to humanity and love.

No world war is coming, but lots of civil disorder and small skirmishes. No nuclear holocaust.

Peace will last from 2050 until 2100, and then I see nothing beyond, which could mean "the end will come like a thief in the night."

Toward the end of things, the veil separating our world from The Other Side will thin, so much so that most people will see decease loved ones and speak with their Spirit Guides.

There will be many false prophets that rise up proclaiming to be Jesus on Earth, and try to lead people astray. We are already seeing this in the big rise of occultism.

People will again find Spirituality, not so much in organized religion, but in the spiritual brotherhood of coming together and finding their Temple within.
Four more comets will pass by before the end times.

Aliens will begin to show themselves in the year 2010, they will not harm us, they simply want to see what we are doing to this planet. They will teach us how to use anti-gravity devices again, such as they did for the pyramids.

I've read that before. It cracks me up about how matter-of-fact she is. :)

ThePenguin 12-30-2004 07:04 PM

Wow, that was a riot. I have seen Sylvia Brown do little 'readings' of people on TV, like she'll tell them stuff about their dead loved ones etc, and for some strange reason I find her somewhat believable when she does that. But reading that stuff above....I dunno. It all sounds like horsesh*t LOL.

Hmmm, I try to have respect for religious beliefs (that's basically a lie, but I'm too scared to come right out seeing as the majority of the world would then despise me) but I really hate that whole argument that everything happens for a reason. I was just talking about this with someone who is religious and still agreed with me. I actually find it offensive when the occasion arises and someone says it to me, as if there could ever be a reason for certain things. I think it comes down to the fact that people need structure and reason, cause and effect, and most have an unwillingness to recognise that everything is random and chaotic. Just incredibly bad luck. But this is about a very real event, not some philosophical waffle......although this is a message board not the General Assembly.

As far as 'Indians' go, it's weird that Indians who make up the world's second largest population should need extra reference when they are being referred to by their own name.......oh those Chinese? You mean the ones from China? I think it's just Americans though, when the world refers to an Indian, they mean these so-called 'India Indians'. Meh, I just find the situation odd and also insulting to both Indians and Native Americans that they never bothered to give Native Americans their own name, or better yet refer to them as their traditional name.

I've been away for awhile but I came back to see what you had said, and all I can say is I couldn't agree more. Man, I am really, really beginning to disbelieve the philosophy about everything happening for a reason. Please accept the nice gestures that are these somewhat inappropriate emoticons for such a gloomy subject matter------> :xoxo: :)
