Bush Monkey Picture Shown on Giant NY Billboard

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A portrait of President Bush using monkeys to form his image that was banished from a New York art show last week amid charges of censorship was projected on a giant billboard in Manhattan on Tuesday.

"Bush Monkeys," a small acrylic on canvas by Chris Savido, created the stir last week at the Chelsea Market public space, leading the market's managers to close down the 60-piece show.

Animal Magazine, a quarterly arts publication that had organized the month-long show, said anonymous donors had paid for the picture to be posted on a giant digital billboard over the entrance to the Holland Tunnel, used by thousands of commuters traveling between Manhattan and New Jersey.

The original picture will be auctioned on eBay, with part of the proceeds donated to parents of U.S. soldiers wishing to supply their sons and daughters with body armor in Iraq.

Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld came under fire from soldiers in Kuwait earlier this month who complained that they had to use scrap metal to armor their vehicles.

"Many of my friends are over in Iraq," Savido said in a statement.

The painting offers a likeness of Bush but the image is made up of monkeys swimming in a marsh. It was originally priced at $3,500 in the show's catalog.

Organizers expect more than 400,000 drivers to see the billboard each day for the next month.

Fabulous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It may be trying to prove a point or what-not, but this is getting out of hand. I don't like Bush, either but he IS our President, whether we like it or not. It's time to grow up and fight like adults. We need to be the better man in the situation.

I agree - but the reason I thought it was great that they showed the pic. was due to the censorship - nothing else!!!

EDIT: I agree we should rally behind our country and he, unfortunately, is the leader. So, I think speaking out against him and his insane, bigoted, and murderous policies is not so much a disrespect for him as it is the horrible job he is doing, which deserves NO respect IMO. I mean if I met the guy, I would maintain proper decorum - but I would and will continue to speak out against his policies

Oooooo - another policital debate thread!!!!!!!

I totally agree, Curtis. But it sure is funny

That's very good of you, 'cause I'm not sure I could do that. I often fantasize about all the choice words I would have if I ever encountered him.

Hey, it's art. If Clear Channel can erect nazi-esque "Our Leader." billboards all over the south, why not this? Good for them. Hell, I'd have gone a step further and made it the painting that recently appeared on the cover of the Village Voice.

I have met MANY people I am not too fond of - usually in a social setting like a party. I think if I am in someone else's party, home, etc., it would be impolite of me to go into attack mode. So, usually the discourse is "May I present blah blah" and I say "Well Hello" and nothing more  Maybe it was the way I was reared but, although I probably would like to  - I would never unless provoked - and even then I doubt it  I mean if I know a certain person is going to be there and I know I cannot control myself - I will not go

Well, I really am like you in that sense. I just make an exception for Dubya. But, because of that, I would probably just make myself scarce so I wouldn't have the opportunity to speak my mind, as you were saying.

Not a chance in hell!!!

He isn't my president. A paramecium is a better man than ****tard Dubya. There isn't anything I can do to lower myself to his level. His evil knows no bounds and anything that will point that out sounds good to me.

  I was going to speculate your answer earlier - I would have been close

Sadly, he is the American President, which means technically and factually he is our Pres. - but I am not so sure he is in anything but in the titular sense because he sure as hell represents NOTHING I believe in

That's exactly how I feel, too. He may technically be the president, but he's not my president. The last election was the first one I ever voted in, and I like to continuously point out that I didn't vote for him.

I completely disagree. I think this country is too complacent. It's ridiculous to stand behind a liar, thief, warmonger, etc,. We should be calling him out for his heinous misdeeds at every opportunity. That man is supposed to lead our country and do what's best. It is our duty as citizens to make sure that happens. :wavey: to do otherwise is to not be a good American.

I think Curtis was critcizing the manner of the attack, not the fact that he was being attacked, if that makes sense. I don't think he has any problems with us criticizing the president, so long as we do it in a more intelligent way than depicting him as a monkey on a billboard for laughs. I say bring on all the criticism, even the immature kind! :D But I still think he has a valid argument because we ought to make a point of expressing why we hate him so much, not because he happens to resemble a monkey but because of his policies. Not that it would do us any good. People still voted him in for four more.

yeah, i thought about that. After i posted, of course. But although there are more intelligent ways to criticize someone, sometimes art is a powerful tool to achieve such ends, as well.

I can't speak for Curtis (and, man, the tongues would sure be wagging if I did! ), but I don't think he was implying that we should just sit back and take it... I think he simply meant that we should voice our displeasure, and try to inact positive changes, in more mature ways than chimp comparisons, etc.

A point that I definitely agree with. (Though I must admit I do find the chimp comparisons pretty dang funny! :o )

Trust me when I say as a member of the conspiracy theorist society  (levity here) I think it sucks and I think the election was tinkered with, but I also think that despite the clear malfeasance, esp. in Ohio, I think existed on both sides (seemingly no one is looking too hard at the alleged D malfeasance) and other errors, the people elected W - and for that I think they are IDIOTS who will latch onto anything their church tells them to latch on to  Thus, I gotta conclude we the people on the whole elected this idiot, bigoted, warmonger in for four more years. I cannot believe people are dumb enough to do that, but they did.

The painting is art and it was censored so the backers had to find some way to display it since it was pulled. Of course they're going to want to kick it up a notch after being snuffed out in such a way. Besides, the President said in Time that he welcomes criticism, he gets something out of it. Also, he needs to know what people think of him anyway since it's his responsiblity to serve the people. Although he seems to think it is to rule the people but whatever.

Thank God for art, we need it to express things that maybe "well-reared" people do not want to say.

If someone were financing this artist and not appreciating the content of his art then the artist would need another financier.

What I meant by my "well reared" comment was civilized people don't want to necessarily call the president out (I wasn't making fun of well raised people). But artists can express uncivilized things because it is their job to translate what is in their hearts into a creation to share.

Some folks are really afraid of this president's strange methods and decisions but won't or don't know how to publicly express it. The artist has every right to do this and I am glad he did because he has made a point and gotten attention. No way would I think that he shouldn't even if it is shocking or controversial.

IMO the American people have been asleep while this president began an unjust war, slowly erodes civil liberties, and recklessly spends our hard earned tax dollars. Maybe some people need to be shocked a little to wake up.
