'Lap Pillow' Offers Solace to Lonely Men

Wed Dec 15, 9:49 AM ET Oddly Enough - Reuters

TOKYO (Reuters) - Single or lonely Japanese men may get lucky this Christmas.

One popular item for holiday shoppers is the "lap pillow," with skin-colored polyurethene calves folded under soft thighs -- a comfy cushion for napping, reading or watching television.

The 9,429 yen ($90) pillow, which comes with one red and one black skirt, went on sale in late November and maker Trane Co Ltd says shipments have reached 3,000 in just a few weeks.

"We created this item to help tired people relax," said Makoto Igarashi, Trane's managing director.

Care was taken with details such as the softness of the thighs, panty lines on the pillow's "backside" and wrinkles in the lap of the skirt so as to make the pillow look and feel as real as possible.

"We thought our main customers would be men in their 20s, but even men in their 60s are buying it," Igarashi said.

At stores, lap pillows gather crowds where people poke and pry at the foam legs.

"I think this may be good for single men, but it could cause trouble for someone who is married," said Shingo Shibata, a 27-year-old company employee browsing at a toy store which sells the pillow.

90 bucks?! They MUST be lonely! LOL You can see a pic of the pillow at the link.

eeeee......creepy!!! Wonder if there's a lonely ladies version
NO THANKS!!

GateandGarden 12-16-2004 11:00 AM

I don't think that would help me out much if I were lonely. I think it would worsen matters because I would feel like such an idiot to be using it. It's one of those things I would be embarrassed to use in front of myself.

Exactly

There is, I believe, sort of a woman's version - it's like half-pillow that's a men's torso with an arm that you wrap around yourself...it's equally as creepy...I'll see if I can dig up a pic/article about that one....

Japanese designers invent 'the boyfriend pillow'
Bizarre

Japanese designers have come up with up a new solution for single women - the boyfriend pillow.

The pillows come dressed as a man and according to manufacturers they are the perfect sleeping partner for lonely women who cannot find a partner.

Each pillow costs £39 and comes with two shirts, in blue and pink, which can be removed to be washed and ironed.
The comforting cushions also double as alarm clocks and work by vigorously shaking to wake up the sleeping ladies.

A spokesman for the company manufacturing the unusual items claims they have been so successful they can't keep up with demand.

The spokesman said: "Women of all ages have been queuing to take one home."

Currently the pillows are only available in Japan but it is expected they will soon be available across the whole of Europe.

See, it is officially cool for a guy to wear pink, just like we were saying in that other thread!

Okay, I don't know about y'all, but I think that one looks scarier! The first one was creepy, but having a fake arm around me seems even creepier!

I've heard of double body pillows (and I'd love to find one) but this is a bit much.

I saw them a while ago -- it's like you sleep between them. I want to say I found it on a site that had therapy-related things for sensory integration dysfunction but I could be dreaming... I've tried it with just two different body pillows and it's lovely except I move around a lot in my sleep and one of them always ends up on the floor.

Ah - okay - I get it now :D I'm not a big fan of body pillows - I prefer a nice regular-sized pillow to cuddle with...or a teddy bear :D

They should get the two together....The guys that buy the one and the girls that bought the other. Then they can be creepy together.

I'm thinking most lonely guys with 90 bucks to burn, aren't going to spend it on a pillow. ;)

That's Jon Heder in Napoleon Dynamite, which my Mom and I saw at the movies four times! (Maybe that's not a lot for some people, but it definitely is for us). And the DVD's coming out on the 21st!!! "I can't wait! I can't wait!" It instantly became one of my favorite movies. :blob1: :blob2: :]

Just think we could have a Lindsey version for lonely Ledgie gals complete with washable white shirt (we could practice rolling up the sleeve) and a Stevie version with obligatory flowing black skirt and for the delux version... an added pair of soft boots :D awww.....
