Queen to tour with new singer
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertain...ic/4096103.stm
The remaining members of rock band Queen are to go on tour next year with former Free and Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers taking Freddie Mercury's place. Guitarist Brian May has said he expects to be on the road with Rodgers and drummer Roger Taylor from April. May said: "Suddenly the Queen Phoenix is rising again from the ashes and will take precedence over... our lives." Queen have played with many different singers since Mercury's death in 1991 but have reportedly not toured. May performed with Rodgers at a concert to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Fender Stratocaster guitar in London in September. We were both so amazed at the chemistry that was going on in [Free hit] All Right Now, that suddenly it seems blindingly obvious that there was 'something happening here,'" May wrote on his website. They teamed up again for a concert to mark their induction into the UK Music Hall of Fame, and were joined by Taylor. "The show went so incredibly well from our point of view, and we got so many rave reactions from out there, we decided almost then and there that we would look at a tour together," May wrote. Queen went to number one in 2000 with a version of We Will Rock You sung by boy band 5ive and they have also played with Robbie Williams, Will Young and Bob Geldof. Queen bassist John Deacon has currently retired from the stage. Rodgers was singer with early 1970s rockers Free, who had a global hit with All Right Now, before forming Bad Company, a successful "supergroup" with members of King Crimson and Mott the Hoople. He has also been in The Firm with Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and The Law with The Small Faces and The Who drummer Kenny Jones. I was there on the night for the Stratocaster gig back in September and it was clear there was a stage chemistry between Rodgers and Brian May... I think he's one of the few singers equipped to take on the role... Nobody will ever touch Freddie Mercury though.... :wavey: Good luck to them  |
Cool
I could have sworn I read somewhere that George Michael was supposed to be touring with Queen. Didn't I read that somewhere? Perhaps that didn't work out for them. Ah well...it's all good.

Kinda knew it was...

I remember the original rumors had either Robbie Williams or George Michael doing the vocals (I prefer George's vocals over WIlliams') but Paul Rodgers is cool... John Deacon has to be a part of this or else I wouldnt want to see it happen...Just as much as Freddie can never EVER be replaced neither can John Deacon, It would be like seeing a Fleetwood Mac without Mr.John McVie on bass. If John isnt a part of this then they should go by a different name...Dont wanna have another "Axl's Guns N Roses tribute band" type of thing goin' on  Brian j. |
If anyone hears about tour dates in the USA let me know. ;)
I agree that nobody can replace Freddy but it still sounds like a great show. |

am I the only one who feels this is a little wrong. It'd be different if Freddy left the Band ala Axl Rose or something, but he's dead, and I don't think they should tour as Queen.
|
FM he is not (no one is IMO) - but G. Michael has a helluva voice  I think Queen could go one as long as they did it tastefully - whatever that is. I mean FM has been dead for ten or so years. My question is will Queen be able to pull it off - it would really need to be a huge success IMO - otherwise why bother and why endure the stigma that will follow a failure. Plus, FM was such the front person of the band and his charisma was infectuous  But, the thought of hearing those musicians again is cool with me!!!!!!

Jason..
I read FM as Fleetwood Mac at first. LMAO!
Yep, George is an amazing singer, one of my faves. |

 Me, too! It was making sense until I reached the bottom. I just though Jason had another one of his typos...and we are all used to those. Then it dawned on me....Freddy Mercury. DUH! |
Wow!!!!

I'm sorry but to me Freddie is Queen. The Queen tribute gig was fantastic but to tour as Queen without Freddie just wouldn't work for me

I'm not sold on a Queen tour. A one off show maybe but not a tour. Also, Paul Rodgers voice is a little to soul influenced to fit in with Queen.

Wow!
Nope, Its true.
A tour will happen! http://pollstar.com/news/viewnews.pl?NewsID=3728 (AP- London) Queen is planning a tour next year with guitarist-vocalist Paul Rodgers replacing frontman Freddie Mercury, who died of AIDS in 1991. Details about what would be the first Queen tour since Mercury's death were being worked out, but it could include shows across Europe beginning this spring, the band's spokesman said December 15. Rodgers, from the bands Free and Bad Company, impressed the remaining members of Queen when he joined them for several performances this year. Rodgers and Queen guitarist Brian May performed Free's hit "All Right Now" at a concert in London to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Fender Stratocaster guitar earlier this year. May and Queen drummer Roger Taylor then asked Rodgers to stand in for Mercury when the band was featured on a British TV channel's music hall of fame program. In a note on his Web site, May said there had been "amazing chemistry" when he played alongside Rodgers, adding: "It seems blindingly obvious that there was something happening here." The official Queen Fan Club welcomed the promised tour, even though it wasn't known whether bass player John Deacon, the other member of the band, will join it. Queen's stadium anthems "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions" were played to packed audiences worldwide. During the late 1980s, when the band had to give up touring because of Mercury's illness, Queen reached new fans with recordings such as "The Miracle" and "Innuendo." |
