Blue Denim

The lovely and talented Nancy (Sodascouts) has posted the Blie Denim video on her site http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~nkerns/Video/bluedenim.mpg

I think this video is great and it just reminds me how much that tour ROCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, I LOVE the big dark blue lace floor length jacket.

Finally, I love the playing she does with the original lyrics:

Understanding me...understanding you
Is not an easy thing to do
Understanding me...and understanding you
Is not an easy thing to do

________________________

Does she mean both understandings (me and you) separately are not the easy thing to do?

Or does she mean that understanding her understanding you is not the easy thing to do.

She changed this lyric several times live (and indeed I believe in hthis video) to understanding me and understanding you - but not consistently - so it is hard to tell.

Anyway - food for thought

I have a hard time watching this video not so much because of Stevie's weight but her hairdo and her outfit. I HATE that crimped hairdo she wore at the time. It's just dreadful. I remember the Jay Leno interview where she said she would spent a couple of hours braiding it and I would just cringe.

I don't like her big blue jacket thing or whatever it is either. There's just too much material and I think it makes her look even bigger. Uggh.

cliffdweller 11-22-2004 12:31 PM

Wow. Two totally different takes on Street Angle era Stevie! I love the song Blue Denim, but I don't remember much of the video, I'll have to take another look.

dissention 11-22-2004 12:55 PM

I don't like live videos and Blue Denim is no excpetion. But she rocked on that tour, IMO.

Johnny Stew 11-22-2004 06:14 PM

I quite like the "Blue Denim" video... and, in my opinion, it's the only occasion that Stevie's crimped hair actually looked cool.

I didn't care for it on the Letterman and Leno appearances, or in various pics from the 'Street Angel' tour.

Villavic 11-22-2004 06:42 PM

Well I love the song and love seeing Vito there.

She looks ok, not the best haircut but ok.
But.. her eyes still looked not completely healthy. Today she looks far better, and happier.

That blue lace floor length jacket is actually a shawl. The same one she wore on Leno in 94, and it's the same one on page one in the booklet in Enchanted... in the Blue Lamp Photo. Its also draped around Sara Fleetwood in the girls photo on about page 5 or six.

It's a beautiful colour.. blue or purple whatever it is.

celestenadia 11-22-2004 09:06 PM

I forget whether it was Letterman or Leno, but this pompous guitar player whose band I used to be in saw it, and the next time he saw me he mentioned it and he actually liked it! He's always been borderline negative about LaNicks so it surprised me...
I saw the Street Angel Tour. It's weird. I thought she was in FINE voice but her BAND didn't seem tight to me or that into it. I also vibed that Stevie was feeling the same way. Remember everyone this was about 10 years ago, so my memory is a little hazy on this but on one of the songs, this was at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel,NJ, - and I forget what song it was, but there was like almost a major musical train wreck right in the middle of it. The band recovered pretty seamlessly, but you could totally vibe that our Stevie was a little ticked!

Same here. I don't have a problem with her weight at all, but I basically never like that hairstyle on anyone, and I'm not really a fan of her outfit in that video, either.

Love the song....the crimped hair was a bad idea, though. I guess it worked in the 90s....or not.

joe 11-24-2004 12:53 PM

love the song...video is so so...i think a concept video would have been better.

i think the hairdo would've looked better providing SHE looked better. and i love the shawl too...it's classic stevie attire. nice seeing she brought that one out of the closet....i think she wore it this past summer too.

she looked so nervous on Leno. at one point he's touching her hair and she's got this really weird look on her face. i think the Letterman appearance was better....at least they were joking about "weasel" management.

I agree - on Leno she looked like she had a cold and that lighting was the WORST ever. She also looked heavier than she did on Letterman. But, I like both performances - although the Letterman Joplinesq. YEAAAEEEAEAAESERFEEAAAAAAAA at the end puts Letterman slightly on top for me

I believe the Leno appearance was filmed the same week she appeared at the House Of Blues, which was broadcast live.
And, as we know, she was suffering some time of bronchial/asthma-type problem that night, which lead to them re-dubbing a good portion of the vocals for later broadcasts of the show.

So, basically, I'm thinking she was probably struggling, health-wise, that entire week.

I didn't know her 1994 HOB concert had been partially redubbed, but indeed it sounds a bit too perfect in some portions. Anyway, I love it, especially for her Destiny, Talk To Me, Blue Denim, The Chain, Rooms On Fire performances

Is it just an impression or Stevie seems always a bit tense on Leno shows? With Letterman she's usually much more playful and relaxed. Well, it could be because they had been married :D ;) , but besides that, there's more feeling with him, IMO.

Partially? 99% of it was overdubbed. Listening to the uncut broadcast and the cleaned up broadcast is like listening to two totally different concerts. But I like them both.

There are a couple of songs that I recall being exactly the same on both recordings.

I'm pretty sure "Destiny" was one of them, but I haven't listened to my cassette of the live broadcast in a while.

I do remember thinking that she didn't sound bad... just overly husky. I was actually surprised they bothered to overdub at all.

There's not one song that is exactly the same. No way.

She sounded pretty wretched but I liked it for some reason. She didn't sound husky, she sounded scratchy and as if she had just drunk a gallon of Southern Comfort and followed it with a pack of Kools before going onstage. I'm not surprsied they overdubbed it, I wouldn't want a performance of mine that sounded like that to be broadcast all over national radio months after the fact.

Rhiannon is COMPLETELY overdubbed. You can even hear the original live recording underneath the new dub.

It would help prepetuate the Stevie myth/aura and also give her a little more spotlight and thus perhaps sell some more albums and concert tickets. Also, I don't need Stevie's help to turn me straight (as being gay is probably the best thing that coulda happened to me, otherwise I'd be some sort of right-wing Republican war pig like my dad and his dad and....) and, I did pretty good with turning gay on my own, but I'm 35 and I still have acne. Do you think her powers could help with that? Do I have to kidnap her for this help, or is a request sent to Ask Stevie at the Nicksfix sufficient?

Dude, i've taken accutane treatment twice and a half and i still have acne! Are you italian? hehehe. I don't know the spell for that! bane of my existence.
Anyways, the flying monkeys sound....adventurous? exuberant? do they relay messages for you? cause leprechauns are notoriously taciturn..
Gawd, are there any straight ledgie males? just kidding. congrats on being gay. It sure would've made my life easier if i was. too bad about your family :( do they care that you're gay?

ricohv 11-25-2004 12:27 AM

Ughh-I did Acutane once and it dehydrated me so bad I thought my body was going to pucker itself inside out. I remember on one occasion -after a long night of concert going/heavy drinking-falling asleep on the bus ride home. When I woke up my eyelids were stuck to my eyes and I literally had to squirt saline solution on my eyes to get them to open easily. Weird. I couldn't imagine going thru that treatment twice. But girls have to worry about getting pregnant and having 2 headed babies or whatever.
Oops, I digress.
I shall fire off my request to Ask Stevie asap. If she charges for her witchery services I will try to get us a group discount, Amber!

yeah, i had to put carmex on every five seconds while i was taking it. but i was pleasantly suprised that, instead of having to wash my greasy ass hair every day, I hardly ever HAD to wash it on accutane...i wasn't drinking or smoking then, or anything, so i didn't have any huge debacles like you! I was stoked, i wish i could have it all the time. It's insanely expensive, though (thanks mom and dad!)
I'm sure Stevie will deny all witch powers, unfortunately...

ricohv 11-25-2004 12:41 AM

I forgot about the constantly cracking lips! It made me want to never have a facial expression. Was Christine was on accutane in the Dance video?
And the expense! I was self employed then so I just didn't bother paying quarterly taxes...twice! And I agree, I don't think Stevie would admit these powers. She might be a little big for her (theoretical) britches. Perhaps if the SYW tour sold in proportion to the album, she might need a little "ching ching" and wouldn't be so hesitant to peddle her skills on the Nicksfix, info-mercials, Psychic hotline, etc.!

@ christine on accutane.
and Stevie's theoretical britches. And thank goodness, she will never do those commercials!
you probably have to know her to be privy to her spells... :)

dude, don't even get the people here started about her answers on Ask Stevie. and yes, you're right, it just means stevie thinks in constant, and predictable patterns and circles  I like it, but...
she's answered some ledgie's questions, but not mine, which is very important:
Me: "during seven wonders, are you saying 'nevah' or 'sara' or 'tara' or...(during the wafty bridge)?"
there's some other theories i forget....but inquiring minds definitely want to know! maybe i should ask Penguin to ask John :p

ricohv 11-25-2004 01:24 AM

Ewwww-the Seven Wonders bridge-word-debate goes on. I remember chiming in on this one several times. And I remember some people went so far as to swear she was saying "pharoah". I said this before (and I'm gonna stand by it), I swear that I remember reading awhile back (who knows where?) that she herself said the word is Tara, tying in with her whole Gone with the Wind thang. Pharoah makes more sense and be would be more literal to the song, so clearly that is not Stevie's style.
Hmm, what was this thread originally about again?!?

No.Way. Tara? No. but ok. yeah. but still, clearly, it's a question she should really answer!
I vote for Nevah, again.

asking the Penguin to ask John-Amber you crack me up. But oh yeah, she never answered mine either: Are you surpised at the level of fan interest in/reaction to your footwear, i.e. platform boots vs. orthopedic tennies?

yes, but not really. it's something i don't happen to care about, but i can see how people would... :) just cause people seem to care about everything. I'm all for any footwear that can make stevie move better. that's all i'm saying.

Back in the day when I spent a lot of time listening to music loudly through headphones (all hopped up and no place to go) I remember thinking listening to it that way you could clearly hear the T sound. Oh yeah-I f*cking love that song and the voice/delivery of the last "oh well if I hope and I pray Maybe it might work out someday". Surprising and a shame that song wasn't top 10!

Hello, thank you. favorite part. FAVORITE PART! hehehe. The whole vocal is so debauched, and therefore heartbreaking. Top five, for sure.

It would seem the move to orthopedic S.A.S. should've caused a sharp increase in mobility. Perhaps Stevie doesn't realize in her twisted, through the looking glass world, where the "the answers to your questions lie sleeping in your dreams" and where "big is not necessarily tall", that smart footwear is not necessarily mobility increasing. I think maybe she'd be better off wearing the platforms but just remember to drink milk everyday  !?

well, sure, but she is only 5'1" And the difference in comfort between platforms and heels is immense...believe me. i think she should have flats. :D

When she was in her 30s & 40s, she used to keep her platform boots on all the time -- onstage & off -- because she said they were so comfortable.

I don't believe I ever recall hearing of her wearing the platform Reeboks on stage until she injured/broke her foot on that little Millennium Tour she did.
I wonder if it never healed properly.

Offbeat question... would years of drug abuse mess with your bone density? Of course, middle-aged women often have to contend with bone density problems regardless, so I guess that wouldn't matter.
