And who doesn't like Fleetwood Mac?? It's the best band in the whole wide world!!! ha ha!!

Well, my friends love to annoy me, they say they hate the mac, but it's just because I'm a fan and sometimes I play their records, dvds, videos, mp3, etc too much, so they get oversaturated

But actually they like the mac.

And, trying to recall, I have not met anybody who said "I don't like Fleetwood Mac" Do you?

(In fact I know people who doesn't like Beatles, or Madonna, or Elton, Pink Floyd, Queen, Bee Gees or any other mega-band, but never Fleetwood Mac. Is that a sign???? ;)

My mom is the same way your friends are. She likes them...but I play the CDs, play the songs on my guitar, watch the DVDs, talk about them too much and just like my other favorite bands she gets sick of them.

As for my friends...I'm 16 so a lot of them are idiots who reply "Who's he?" to a reference of Stevie Nicks. But I've successfully hooked one of my friends. :blob2:

My mom says she doesn't like FM, with the qualification that she LOVES GDW...and that The Chain is ok. Go figure.

I used to drive my friends nutz, but I have burned out on them which is good. But then I'll come back to them and the songs will be fresh again and I'll end up going thru a huge FM phase. I'll end up playing Then Play on thru In The Meantime. (haven't heard Something Big yet)

Honestly, if I heard them now I don't think I would like them as much as I did at 14. My tastes have changed over the last 15 years. But I was hooked early, so I'm stuck with them!! :D

My parents don't really "get" the Mac - Dad likes Glen Miller and Mom likes Ricky Nelson, among others, lol. They do like Chris' music as a rule though.

My little sister thinks the Mac is OK, but my older sister HATES them, especially Lindsey. I guess I played them one too many times in the car.

The guy I'm dating says he's really into them, but then he said he really liked it when Lindsey sings Leather and Lace, so.... lol. I admit I was disappointed when he said that. I do NOT need to be humored! :mad: (Perhaps this is a sign: time to break up!)

My friends all think they're OK, but don't really understand my passion for them. That's why I love places like this where I can gush with those who appreciate the brilliance of the MAC!

How can you not love FM?!?!

I never thought I would live to see the day my Mom would own a FM cd, But when I visited last she had "Greatest Hits"...So that's a start.

Btw, My Mom is a rocker (My late Father was a country/western & surf music freak), brought us 3 boys up on The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Beach Boys, etc...I even saw my Mom one time listening to death metal, When made me look to sky and ask "What the f**k is wrong with THAT picture God?" :lol:

That's funny - I think it was Chris's radio hits that made my mom not like them! i keep tryna tell her...but she's into alternative country right now...

Both my parents were pretty cool w/ liking FM. My dad especially has decent taste in music so he would always be willing to listen to them in the car etc. We used to have a house in the Poconos, and on those dreadful drives up, he'd put in my tape of the white album/Rumours and everyone was happy.

My mom was also sort of into them; she actually made some comments that i recall as being pretty cool for a 'mom'-- for example I remember her saying that LB was gorgeous in the Hold Me video (that i used to sit in front of the TV and drool over whenever it came on, which was a lot in 1982...) I also remember once bringing home some FMac book that i had ordered from the Scholastic Club or something, and she was sitting at the kitchen table looking at it and said, "John has very nice legs, he looks adorable in those cut offs." I was like, 'wow mom, you're so right, now give me my book back' LOL. Even recently sometimes she'll surprise me w/ a comment like "Isn't today Lindsey's birthday?" :laugh: and she'll be right!

I tried back then to get my friends into them but no luck. They thought they were dorks who couldn't compare to the coolness of Duran Duran. :laugh: At least they knew I loved them, so if they found an article about them etc they'd save it for me--actually my parents and my best friend (since 5th grade) still do that..... When I told this friend that we were having a Q&A with John she said incredulously , "I can't believe how far you've come w/ this band. Did you ever think when we were 13 that you'd be doing this?!" to which I replied 'God bless the internet!' :woohoo:

I have met two people that said they absolutely can't STAND the Mac. They were teens in the 70's, so maybe instead of loving them like everyone else, it became overload for them? I mean, wasn't Mac everywhere in the 70's?

I still don't understand how that could happen, but oh well, to each his/her own!

This is really interesting. The Mac's a very tough band to get into at first -- but once you get just an inkling and then get hooked in, you're totally swept up. I got into FMac when i was a senior in high school when The Dance came out. I picked it up just to be cultural, haha, believe it or not. Then I realized I knew tons of these songs and they all grew on me - songs I never thought twice about had suddenly transformed to huge favorites. Then you realize how often you hear them on the radio and wonder how you ever passed them up. I think the main problem that younger folks have is that group is just too adult contemporary at first. And that's because we tend to hear "Little Lies" and "Gypsy" in the grocery store and dentist office more than we hear them at their best - pure, emotional rock. It's subconscious!

Point is, that when people first hear their songs, they respect them & realize that they're a good band, but won't go and buy a CD. But when they start really learning the history and seeing the variety of the songs (the first time I heard Lindsey's "I'm So Afraid" solo, Stevie/his staredown during Silver Springs after learning the meaning behind it all, Christine play "Songbird", etc.) it's an ocean of details that opens up! Lindsey's artistry, Stevie's lyrics, the band's soap opera - that's why they really are the best band to be a fan of, there's SO MUCH there!

But the thing is, you have to get over that first hurdle. SOMETHING in the band won't work for you. Either you get turned off by Lindsey's quirkiness, Christine's adult contemporary vibe or Stevie's... well, I think to younger people she's kind of a joke. SERIOUSLY I don't want to start any arguments here, but she has a reputation that's a little hard to get by. That's just the way I've seen it with people. If "Stand Back" or "Edge of 17" comes on the radio, most people I know would chuckle. I think you just need to find what part of the band DOES work for you. It's so odd how that worked for me - to find certain things you like, and then everything else you disliked/overlooked suddenly grows on you and solidifies you as even more of a fan. I know I hated Lindsey at the start, but now he's my alltime favorite artist hands down. Funny how that works.

That's just how I see it. Gotta let it grow on you at first and then find the aspect of the band you dig, then suddenly the parts you didn't enjoy totally change. After being a fan for years throughout high school and college, it's really opened up my eyes to music appreciation - and for other people too. Can't say I've gotten anyone to buy all their albums, but there's definitely a lot of people out there who now can happily sing along to "Tusk" or "The Chain" that couldn't before :thumbsup:

MAybe they are fans of Led Zeppelin and all those kind of bands. People who like them does not listen soft rock often.

Good point except the one chick was really into The Eagles & Skynyrd :shrug:

And, I'll bet many of the Led Zep fans would've been into the Peter Green or Bob Welch eras of FMac, but not the Rumours incarnation.

Yeah, LATE '60's...but, you gotta remember that Fleetwood Mac was formed BEFORE Led Zeppelin!! Zeppelin started out in 1968 (a year AFTER Fleetwood Mac), so they'd be considered a '60's band, too...even though they didn't hit their greatest heights until the 70's.

When I was in high school, Fleetwood Mac was just dreadfully un-cool... even when 'Tango' was big.
FM was either the band that your mom and dad listened to, or your kid sister listened to.

Most rock/classic rock fans tend to think of FM as a "soft" band, lacking the crunch and electricity of bands like Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Van Halen, etc.
And they're often considered too AC for the Top 40 crowd.

It's funny though, for as much grief as did (and still do) get for being an FM fan, many of my friends in high school would say, "hey, I saw FM on MTV this weekend," or "I heard Stevie's new song on the radio."
Sometimes they'd even admit to liking it. ;)

But I have converted many, many people over the years. I gauge what kind of music they tend to listen to, fashion a Mac mix-tape (or, now, CD) to suit their tastes, and then let the music do the rest. :)

I've found that once someone has a few Mac songs they really like, they tend to be more open to the songs they might not have listened to before.

Still, it doesn't work on everyone... my father & brother especially! (Though Dad usually likes Christine's songs and loves "Tusk," and my brother "tolerates" "Never Going Back Again.")

Here in Peru the Mac was never uncool, but it was considered a soft band. Most fans of hard rock like Aerosmith or Led Z, doesn't like the mac that much, but they respect them. They didn't hate Fleetwood Mac

They did hate ABBA, that was the band mom&dad listened and encourage their children to hear, so ABBA was really hated!!!

Now, my friends fan of hard rock, they started to love Stevie when she sang SDMHA with Tom Petty. They found her very cool

My mom thinks the same thing about Chris, and whenever i bring up FM, she rolls her eyes and starts singing GYOW in this really, really, whiny voice... :laugh:

Well, I used to dislike them back in the 70s. (Hate is such a strong word.) And my brother liked them. I just thought they were all weird & a bunch of druggies. (Well, that part was true). And I was more into disco then. Now my brother dislikes them & I like them. Go figure. :shrug:

no, he really does have kind of a whiny voice...for a guy...yeah, that's the right spelling. Same thing happened to me in HS when i used the word smarmy. It led to a string of jokes about Smarmots (smarmy marmots) don't ask, cause i don't know... :laugh:

my boyfriend HATES fleetwood mac.....(he's a punk, what can you expect... :rolleyes: ) however, he will admit that lindsey buckingham is an awesome guitarist. i think i'm going to have to start slowly introducing him to the mac....and maybe he'll like it

My mom hates them. In 1977 , she was 19 and she said it was all they played on the radio. She hated it then and she hates them even more now.

She HATES Stevie Nicks. She thinks she is a witch, a loser and that she can't sing at all.

It was really hard being a fan while living with her. She didn't even want to walk in my room with the posters.

Go figure?!

My mom has listened to the Mac in the car when I was little in the mid 70's and then when I got into them in 1982, she loved Hold Me and Eyes of the World. She has two Mac CDs~~Mirage and Greatest Hits from 1988. I think she prefers Christine's songs.
My siblings are younger than me by 9 years and 16 years, when they were younger the Mac was played heavily and they were into it. Now, I would say they appreciate the band still but aren't exactly passionate about them like I am. I know my little sister was not crazy about the Say You Will CD/Tour but prefers the classic stuff.
The three doctors I work for know of my passion for the Mac even granting me time off to go out of state to see them. One doctor is almost 50 yrs old and he prefers the Bare Trees/MTM lineup but enjoys the late 70/early 80's visions of Ms. Nicks. He does express how he thinks Mick is not an A+ drummer and he loathes Mr. Buckingham ~~whether it's to get me annoyed or because he doesn't like to hear how talented & gorgeous the man is, I must admit I do carry on about it! Next doctor is in his early 40's and likes music (R.E.M., Sheryl Crow, etc.)~~he comes in bearing any Mac news he hears and when Say You Will came out he commented on how they have that distinct sound. I also watched the Today show episode with him. He is just cool to work with.
Doctor number three is a couple years older than me and told me one of the first album's he bought was BellaDonna, but he hasn't really listened to the Mac/Stevie in recent years (the newer stuff)
My friend and co-worker likes The Chain and a few other tunes but was never big on the band. Her husband loves Stevie Nicks.
I have met friends and penpals through loving the band and their music.
I have even introduced the Mac's music to a few people who like it.
Never met anyone who didn't like the Mac in some way or in one of their various lineups.

I'm a big fan of both bands.

That is a good point ChiilD. I like all eras of the Mac. My favorite however, is the Welch era.

I do. I've encountered hundreds of people who really hate Fleetwood Mac. Even many people who are close to me dislike them quite a bit.

Friends, co-workers, kin . . . even people I've had in my Fleetwood cover band -- there's plenty of Mac hatred to go around in my sphere. It's invigorating! It certainly keeps the conversation on other subjects.

i started to really listen to the welch era a year or two ago. i had heard but never really LISTENED to the the welch years.

what's great is that you basically have christine and bob sharing mystery and bare trees. bob's **** is just plain cool and i came to the conclusion that there was no song back then that i didn't like of christines - even 'show me a smile'. i actually liked them as a band. they weren't sappy or poppy but cool and funky...i don't know...maybe it's the structured and tight rhythm/keyboard section.

i used to think stevie's 'angel' was an earlier version on hashtf when i used to thumb thru the pre-b/n lps in record stores in the early 80's. i digress....i remember actually seeing the b/n album for sale but not thinking much about it...i had already liked them but was still discovering them in 1982...the previous lives of fm was a task back then. when i did hear the occasional radio airplay of 'silver springs' (featured artist day) i was trying to find it on one of the pre-75 albums cause they never announced the song...

ha ha...i really should just go post on the pre-remours forum right now....

I used to be a total Fleetwood Mac obsessive, but have over the last eight years grown tired of and lost interest in most of the members - except Lindsey Buckingham and, to a lesser extent, Billy Burnette.

As for my parents... well I don't know what happened there. They used to like FM. They had Bare Trees, Mystery to Me, Future Games, Fleetwood Mac, and Rumours in their LP collection, but now my mom listens to classical and my dad likes country. WTF?

But yes, I have met people who don't like Fleetwood Mac. Two of my closest friends in fact. I took them both to shows on the SYW tour and managed to convert one into a Buckingham admirer but she still hates the Mac. The concert had no affect on the other friend, however.

Whatever, there are plenty of artists out there that other people worship and I either can't stand or are indifferent to... take Pink Floyd and The Who for example.

Lets see...my dad likes Fleetwood Mac, but mainly for the guitar players like Peter Green, Bob Welch, and Lindsey. In fact, I really got my dad into Lindsey now! He even loves listening to his solo stuff, and that's not too surprising since my dad has always been forever cool.

My mom is pretty indifferent. She dislikes Stevie, though. She hates her image, her voice and doesn't care for her songs (except for some of the ones off of Tusk). She basically finds her quite...vocally and musically limited. To put it nicely. And I can't influence my mother at all. She will stick with her opinion to the end...but she does think Lindsey is hot. So...I guess that is some kind of a plus. :rolleyes:

My brother doesn't care. My sister-in-law doesn't care.

My boyfriend only really likes Lindsey (especially any song he did on "the Dance"), lol! He doesn't really know anything about Fleetwood Mac except for the Buckingham-Nicks era... He also doesn't get Stevie and he said Christine's music is either too poppy or just "boring." He's very, very, very picky though. In general. So...liking Lindsey is a good thing. :nod:

And that's about it. My friends are evenly divided. I basically just play them stuff without saying who it is, because some of them won't care one way or another and if I say it is Fleetwood Mac or Christine or Lindsey or Stevie they would just roll their eyes at me. lol!

When I was a kid, my mother drove me NUTS with The Eagles, so I took every opportunity to drive her insane with Fleetwood Mac. She's at the point now where if she's in my car and she hears Stevie come on, she'll bitch me out. Doesn't really care for Chris all that much, either, but she does love Lindsey ever since I gave her a copy of Law and Order.

My friends are all converted Mac/Stevie fans. Most of them didn't care for FM or only slightly liked them, then became huge fans through their friendship with me.
My best friend, Anne, now actually surfs Mac sites and P2P groups for unreleased tracks and demos.

In fact, one of my friends always teases me that I should get a kickback from the band for all the people I've converted.

Within my family, one of my uncles and one of my aunts are both big Mac fans. She's always been more of a Stevie fan, and he started out as much more of a Lindsey fan, but was turned off by 'Go Insane' and most of his stuff since then (my gain though -- because he gave me his vinyl 'Law & Order'). He now prefers Stevie, too.
My cousins in Oklahoma City are Mac fans as well, and are quite fond of Lindsey and Christine, but they also prefer Stevie and have travelled to several of her solo shows.

In my immediate family, my mother prefers Lindsey and then Christine, though there seem to be a growing number of Stevie songs that she tells me are favorites ("Real Tears" and "Illume" chief among them, oddly enough).
Dad pretty much has no use for FM at all, outside of "Tusk" (he's a marching band fanatic), and my brother only likes "Never Going Back Again"... everything else I've played for him, has been deemed "over-produced."

My dad likes the Eagles and isn't really a fan of Fleetwood Mac, but if I put them on in the car, he wont turn it off, he'll just turn it way down.

My mom LOVES them, that's how I got into them. Same for my aunt, those are the two that took me to see my first FM concert.

My friends are pretty sick of them. Sometimes they will listen to a song, and I've known them to get into a few of their songs. But, they're pretty sick of me talking about them nonstop and trying to get them to go to a concert with me. My one friend went with me to see Stevie, while one of the others would never pay money to see Stevie, but she would pay a lot of money to see Fleetwood Mac (but she also never wants to listen to them.) Who knows, my friends are messed up!
