Spin-off: Which shows did you love that were cancelled too soon?

Taking a cue from Villavic's thread, which shows were cancelled way too early that you loved? Mine are:

-Millennium: I love Lance Henriksen but was not much of an X-Files fan, so I didn't know how this would be. But I loved it and would tape it to watch with my grandmother. VERY dark and grim. It was only on for three seasons and when they cancelled it, they didn't explain anything. Bastards.

-American Gothic: Probably my all-time favorite show. Everything was perfect. But CBS hated it, aired it out of order, and killed it after one season. So good and so addictive, but in a way I'm glad it got killed early because CBS forced Jake Weber (Dr. Matt) out of the show at the end of the season and I was furious (loooooove him!).

-Twin Peaks: Killing this show after two seasons was and still is incomprehensible.

-Lateline: This show cracked me up. It was sort of like a parody of Nightline and the whole cast was hysterical. I just found out it came out on DVD, so I can't wait to get it!

amber 11-12-2004 08:19 PM

I couldn't think of any, but i pick Millenium, also. One of my favorite authors wrote the book/story for the pilot (found out way after show was cancelled) Elizabeth Hand. But yeah, i really liked that show. I liked how Lance was kinda creepy himself...

Lance rocks. That face of his is one of the best faces on any actor out there.

It came out on DVD a few months ago, but I haven't watched all the discs yet. They do look fab, though!!!!!!!!!!

But you've seen all the episodes, right? I haven't, that strikes me as a great winter rental  Thanks for the heads up.

Yeah, I've seen them all. It's maddening, though, because nothing gets wrapped up in the final season.

The only one I can think of right off is Wonderfalls. Cancelled after only four episodes. :(

Yeah, I agree. That show was great! My mom and I still talk about it to this day. Gary Cole was sooo creepy, and that lady slept with him, or whatever happened exactly...can't remember all the details. LOL. I just remember thinking 'what is she doing!' And then Lucas Black was just so cool. Love the accent and he was such a cute little kid. He's actually quite cute now too...he's currently in the movie 'Friday Night Lights.' (don't recommend it, not as good as I thought it would be).

Amen and amen!! Not even FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper could solve THAT mystery.

Agree with American Gothic too. They got scared of the darkness...whatevah.

Keen Eddie! One of the funniest, cutest, wittiest shows on TV...EVAH. Fox didn't give the show a chance to find an audience. What was my philosophy..oh yeah, BITE ME!!

amber 11-12-2004 08:53 PM

Can i just stop and say...by reading the ledge, i'm constantly amazed at how much different TV y'all have managed to watch. Sesly...it's amazing. :wavey:
I mean, not to say i've always been all busy, or anything, and i thought i watched tons of tv, but really, no. That's what makes it even more mysterious

Merlyn, Lucas Black's sister, was sooooo creepy. And the way Gary Cole killed her was just so disturbing, I'm still creeped out by it every time I watch an episode. My favorite aspect of the show was the relationship between Lucas Black and Dr. Matt, though, I thought it was fantastic. And Paige Turco's character was just so weird.

Amber, this was years ago, when they made good television shows. What I wouldn't give to have shows like Twin Peaks, American Gothic, and Millennium back.

I know, but i wasn't just talking about that. I mean all the shows people talk about. And, i'm actually older than a lot of people, (including you) shouldn't i have seen more television? acckk! I'm missing countless cultural references! P.S. Liked Twin peaks for a minute, got irritated after that :sorry: clearly, i'm in the minority on that one! But i think DL is mostly way overrated. Enjoyed lost highway, but

u know i wrk from home & have for years, the t.v. is always on here even if no1 is sitting right there in front of it, also my 5 yr old spends some time watching his t.v., so it seems i see some shows w/ out really even trying 2~ lol :distress: all of a sudden my son is in2 the brady bunch & game shows, it is nuts, we have game show network & instead of watching cartoons, he is watching who wants 2 b a millionaire~ it is hilarious, i caught him playing w/ 2 other kids, asking them trivia ?'s, telling me that the kids were playing for, such as 32,000, 64,000 ..., he knows the names of the game show host, & the other day he asked me if i was a fan of love connection? all i could do was shake my head & laff  :xoxo: :xoxo:  ~

Great topic!

In recent memory Firefly and Wonderfalls were wonderful shows cancelled even before a full season.

Two coming-of-age shows cancelled before they should have been are The Wonder Years (it still bugs me that they got canned one year before the planned finish), and Freaks and Geeks.

Not sure if Family Guy counts since it's coming back in May, but that and Futurama were great shows cancelled too soon.

I also second Twin Peaks and Millenium but I haven't ever seen American Gothic.

That's funny! Although, i'm against kids watching tv, but still...that's so cute! That's funny that he likes game shows instead of cartoons! Heck, maybe he'll learn stuff, right? :) He'll be one of those weird trivia kids... (saw the picture of him, BTW, he is adorable with a capital "A")

thanx & don't worry i am not 1 of those mommy's who uses t.v. as a babysitter, but when he does get 2 watch the t.v. game shows r 98% of the time what he will pick, lol, it is so funny~ he does pick up on things cuz he does tend 2 gravitate more towards the ? & answer type shows & then tells me all this stuff, he amazes all the time :) :) ~

I just googled it -- It premiered in August 1994, stopped airing in January 1995, and was officially cancelled in May of that year. It doesn't seem like that long ago!!

Hawkeye 11-12-2004 10:30 PM

TITUS should've been way over 3 seasons.

Yep, I used to love Freaks and Geeks. I really think that it was because I was around that age in that time period.
I know that they have it out on DVD now but it is not the same as having new shows.

Family Guy is also out on DVD. I'll have to watch it again just for the local references.
Speaking of I was hoping that the show Providence was picked up for another season. It was not my favorite show but I was kind of hoping that they would come here and film some scenes and might need some extras. ;)
Yes, even that is out on DVD.

Oy, I hated that one. Some episodes were great, but she was so obsessed with that freakin' Jordan that I got incredibly irritated when she would even mention him. LOVED Rayanne, though. :D

The two shows that should have continued a little farther:

Sports Night
Strangers With Candy (the best show ever made)

When My So Called Life came out, I was just about to be a junior in high school. It was PERFECT. I loved it so much and I was crushed when it ended. Even MTV aired it awhile. No, that should have lasted one full season. Claire Danes was just amazing.

Regarding Millenium, they had that show on an X Files episode titled Millenium...I guess they tied some loose ends on that. It's on season 7 ( 2000-2001)

Merf 11-13-2004 12:01 PM

I watched it and it left more questions unanswered than answered. I was INFURIATED! Even Lance Henriksen said that it sucked.

Hawkeye 11-13-2004 12:50 PM

I just thought of another newly cancelled show that should've never thought of being cancelled. Tough Crowd With Colin Quin was an absolutely amazing show that they cancelled in favor of retarded shows like Drawn Together and Grahm Norton and Crossballs or somethign.

AACCKKK! FNL is a really good movie...and I HATE football. Of course I could be biased since the movie is about the town I live in and I was in High School the year it took place. The book is also very good. I have had a couple of really good conversations with the author. He was villified by the town for his portrayal of Odessa, but in my mind he hit the nail right on the head...

I just loved it's political incorrectness. Hilarious as hell. I can watch the shows over and over and still laugh my ass off.
