What are you reading right now?

I was just curious to see what my fellow bookworms were into right now.

I've just finished Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke. It's a very strange but interesting book about two English magicians in the last century. A very long read, but it was engaging and enjoyable.

I've also just finished Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh. Funniest book ever! If you've seen the movie, the novel is like everything x10. It's told in a Scottish accent written phonetically, with a lot of odd Scottish slang. Here's a little sample:
"Whoah. Likesay, gaunnae huv tae stoap ye thair, catboy. The O Grades wis bull****, ken? Thought ah'd use that tae git ma fit in the door. Showin initiative, likeseay. Ken?"
(that's one of the more understandable passages..)
There's even a glossary in the back of the book to translate the slang words.
It's radge. (radge = crazy)

As of now, I'm reading Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz. It's about a young man that can see ghosts. It seems pretty cool so far.

:wavey:

I just got Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell in the mail from Amazon yesterday! I'm going to start it tonight, since it'll probably take me 6 months to finish it...

Last week I finished Christpher Rice's The Snow Garden (which sat on my shelf for almost a year before I got around to it...)

DrummerDeanna 11-10-2004 02:29 PM

I just finished Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (second time reading it) - it was even better then second time around..I LOVE Harry Potter..

I just started reading The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks - I haven't seen the movie yet - and I was buying a journal at a Barnes and Noble when I saw TN at the checkout stand - it was an impluse buy :D

Just a word of advice - it starts out rather slow. If you feel like you want to just stop b/c it's too slow for you, don't! LOL. It gets more interesting by like the 6th chapter or so. ;)

I liked the book too, but damn if I didn't want to smack Harry around. The kid was such a whining bastard in this one!

Just finished a book called Faerie Tale, by i can't remember. It was good, another real life/fantasy tale. (love those. If anyone else likes them, i recommend Jonathan Carroll, and Elisabeth Hand) But i haven't been able to get a new book, so before i go to bed i've been rereading my Calvin N Hobbes.

Ohh, The Notebook is a wonderful story, happy reading! I've read all of Sparks' books (sort of sappy but I like that :p) I didn't see the movie either, but I'd like to. I LOVE HP too!

Right now I'm trying to get through Bill Clinton's autobiography. His childhood was very interesting. I am halfway through it and have stalled with my reading. Anyone get through this one?

Yep - I'm a big fan of the sap lol....I have enjoyed what I've read so far - and if I really like it then I can look forward to reading his other books...

Although next in line after the Notebook is The Las of Similars by Chris Bohjalian.

Was it a good book?

I finally finished A Place of Execution by Val McDermid last week, and I haven't decided what's next -- In the Fall by Jeffrey Lent or a re-read of 1984 by George Orwell.

aww..come on he just has all sorts of teenage angst to deal with ;)

Seriously though - Harry is a little pain in the ass like in this one - refusing to listen to Hermione toward the end....that always gets me...

But the one I wanted to slap around in that book was Umbridge - ugh - I HATE that character...I don't think a book character has even inspired so much anger in me haha...

It was decent, but not as good as his first, A Density of Souls, Though no one else seems to agree with me

Never read In The Fall, but 1984 is great!

Me too....but I loved the fleeing of Fred and George and the fact that Peeves totally gave her hell....loved that - and I did like how Umbridge was finally handled...though Harry and Hermoine almost got it too...

Umbridge's quill punishment also got to me -that character is pure evil...I think I disliked her more than I do Voldemort lol

McGonagall kicks ass for sure - one of my absolute favorite Hogwarts profs

LOVE Order of the Phoenix- best HP yet. Each one just gets better and better. Harry's teenage angst drove me a little bit nuts in it as well, but I'm so excited at how dark and scary everything's finally getting. I've reread it a few times, and everytime I read Dumbledore's speech at the end, I get weepy. And Umbridge was such a well-written villain. Ugh, now I want to read it again!

I'm rereading "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" for the millionth time. I love Carson McCullers. Also rereading "Jude the Obscure." Just finished reading "Anna Karenina," which I'd always guilted myself about not reading. I've been trying to smart myself up lately. I'm watching too much TV and feeling like a drooling idiot.

Besides this thread...

Nothing. Didnt start back on Anne Rice's "Blood Canticle" because the print is so small it's hurting my eyes to read...But once I get glasses I will finish it.

Alice Hoffman Blackbird House I LOVE this author, I can actually FEEL her writing.

Some chick, can't remember her name PS - I Love You Kind of sappy for me, but not a bad read - this chick's husband dies when they're still young & he leaves her a list of things she must do every month after he's gone.

I am reading 'Never Break the Chain: FMac and The Making of Rumours'. It was one of my birthday presents a few days ago. It's not too bad; i am learning some new stuff. However I did spot a couple little mistakes, I'm such a nitpicker. I'm also getting a kick out of seeing this website mentioned in there, and also seeing our names mentioned in the back of the book, very weird! I may have to show that to my parents. :p

I REALLY like Alice Hoffman. I still haven't read "Blackbird House," but I've been meaning to. Thanks for the reminder.

My favorites of hers are "Practical Magic" (the movie is dreadful in comparison) and "The River King."

Forgot- I've also been reading in pieces "Dangerous Angels" by Francesca Lia Block for about the millionth time.

Omigosh, i remember when i read that! i was young...maybe, jr. high? I loved it though...I reread books all the time, and the other night, i thought i had finally completed the "Wrinkle in Time" set (if you have kids, or even if you're an adult, you must get these for them/read them yourself) but it turns out I didn't buy Wrinkle in Time like i thought  others are "A swiftly tilting planet" "A wind in the door" and "many waters" many waters is awesome, it goes back to the time of Noah and has so many lessons, and weird thoughts. Masterpieces, all of them. Oh, and don't forget the Narnia books, which i reread all the time! (except, again, i am missing one - The lion, witch, and wardrobe)

I think it's great you guys are reading those. Everyone who has kids should have to read about raising them, IMO! Kudos to you, not boring at all! God, i wish my mom had occasionally been in a good mood!

It wouldn't be my first choice for spiritual guidance, but whatever floats your boat. :)

I *FINALLY* finished "It" by Stephen King...its such a long book it took me forever, plus I was re-reading "'Salem's Lot" at the time too (my fav King book). I think I'm gonna start Christine next, and Ann Coulter's latest.

The fact that she can make me believe that there COULD be fish still alive in a dead guy's coat pocket is what gets me! It's like, "oh, of course, that makes so much sense" even though it does not. The River King is great, so is P.M.

Blackbird House is different from her others - it's like a collection of short family stories, but they all take place over years & years in the same house.

I've read all of her books, and I have yet to be disappointed, but I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE Blue Diary and Here on Earth.

At the moment I am reading "Interview with the Vampire", just needed a good halloween book a while back.

Also still in the middle of "From Russia with Love, James Bond"

Thinking next book might be "The Amber Room."

I also LOVE Harry Potter, though my fave still remains POA, I really liked Sirius, awful that she had to kill him  Looking forward to the next one being out eventually!

I'm reading Never Break The Chain: Fleetwood Mac And The Making Of Rumours (The Vinyl Frontier Series) by Cath Carroll.

jadegypsy 11-11-2004 05:05 PM

Amber: Why am I not surprised that you are curious!

It's a Thriller/Mystery like the Da Vinnci Code, but it's by Steve Berry. Should be in a paperback at any major book store...The title refers to a room in Russia that was supposedly made entirly of the gem Amber, and then after WWII it was hidden, hence the search to find it...

markolas 11-11-2004 05:56 PM

I'm reading Opening the Hand of Thought by Kosho Uchiyama Roshi. Sort of an intro book to the practice of Soto Zen Buddhism.

I love that book. :) But my all-time favorite Anne Rice book is "Witching Hour" -- I usually read it once every year or so.

Hawkeye 11-11-2004 07:39 PM

I'm not a big reader, but I did recently read and liked suprisingly The Killing Season. The only book I've ever truly enjoyed was And Then There Were None, the best book ever.

Just finished Stephen Fry's The Hippotamus (sp?? obviously, I read the dutch translation). Very funny :D
Now reading The Black Album by Hanif Kureishi. About a pakistani student in the UK who comes into contact with muslim fundamentalism. So far, quite good.

RavenOfRhiannon 11-12-2004 09:51 PM

I just finished 'Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West' by Gregory Maguire for the 6th (Yes, 6th) time. It's my favorite book. This is the first time I have reread it since the musical debut last year.
Now I am reading 'Sweet Potato Queen's Field Guide to Men' as I met the author last Friday.
HPIV is also floating around on my nightstand for the 3rd time...
