Ashlee Simpson: SNL (Sat. Night Lip-Sync)

The funniest thing just happened on SNL. For Ashlee Simpson's second "performance", the audio guys cued up the wrong track for her to lip-sync. She got really embarrased and ran off the stage, leaving her poor band to stand there and make WTF faces at each other.

Her first performance was "Pieces of Me", and her vocals sounded EXACTLY like the CD, but the band was live. I've seen bits of her MTV show, and I know she can't really sing like that live. I was assuming her second set would be her current single (I forget the name). But instead, a single drum track cued the band, and then her recorded "Pieces of Me" vocal started AGAIN.

She was obviously shocked and didn't know what to do. So, she just danced around a little while the vocal and drum track played. Then, the band decided just to go with it, and started playing along to try to save the performance. Instead, Ashlee looked like she was about to cry and ran off stage...

The real kicker? The end piece when everyone is on stage saying goodbye just came on... Ashlee blamed it on THE BAND for playing the wrong song. She just laughed it off as live TV. :distress:

Yeah, Ashlee, it's THE BAND's fault you can't sing worth sh*t...

Oh, I'm sorry! I forgot about the time-delay. Didn't mean to spoil.

How much money would you like to bet that they edit it out?

Also, the NBC/SNL message boards have just crashed -- people are PISSED!!! And Ashlee's taking a beating on her website's message boards.

And, for the record, my take on the whole thing seems to be what most people find so offensive: SHE BLAMED HER BAND ON NATIONAL TV. How pa-the-tic.

DeadliestPoison 10-24-2004 12:58 AM

It was only a matter of time until video started circulating on the internet:

Nixxxed 10-24-2004 01:51 AM

I just read on another board that NBC edited out the fiasco. I hope the person who typed it was simply high and missed it, because you guys HAVE to see it!!!

But, the whole affair just hit the Drudge Report and Howard Stern's website, so it's not going to simply go away.

DeadliestPoiston, is the apology you posted the bit from the end of SNL where she blames her band, or a new clip where Ashlee fesses up for real? I'm on an old PC and can't play it, but I'm DYING to know...

I haven't downloaded them because they're .avis and I don't have the codec downloaded on this computer, but I'd imagine it's the apology that aired in the episode.

Best moment of Celebrity Schadenfreude ever.

Copied from Ashlee "Sync"son's website:

Quote:

Lucky Magazine: What are your takes on lip-synching?

Ashlee Simpson: I'm totally against it and offended by it. I'm going out to let my real talent show, not to just stand there and dance around. Personally, I'd never lip-synch. It's just not me.
This is funny in so many ways. First, she DID lip-sync her first performance. Second, when her next song got f*cked up, she just stood there. Third, when she didn't know what to do, she started dancing around, then ran off stage of a well-respected, legendary live national TV show.

Then...??? She blamed her band!!!

Thank God for TiVo and the Internet. Now, if we could only catch someone important in a career-crushing lie ... like Bush.

HILARIOUS! I agree about the lip-syncing and immaturity she displayed. If something like that happened to Bush it would be divine.

Oh...Her performance is starting!

Judging by what you've said, I'd hate to support such a lame excuse for an 'artist' but half of the time lip syncing is at the production's request. Chris Isaak was here just a few weeks ago and he was complaining that he had to lip sync for some presentation. I'm sure it's a little different for him, performing with a his band who no doubt know how to improvise and fix the situation should something go wrong, as opposed to just standing there looking stupid when the tape cuts. There is a famous incident of this here from last year. Billy Idol made a fool of himself at the football grand final. It obviously reflects on the 'artist' and had it gone wrong for someone like Chris Isaak, he too would have looked like the idiot despite that fact that he and his band would have been more equipped to actually play the song originally. Having said that, I'm guessing this girl isn't quite in the same position to favour a live performance.

Thank you, Lux, for bringing that point up. I would never have thought that lip syncing would be at the production's request. It is very unfortunate that Chris Isaak had to lip sync on that occasion. He is a naturally talented, pure musician.

(Chris Isaak just happens to be one of my favorite musicians, and despite the fact that I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, I've never seen him live; I'd jump at the chance. I believe that, in his case, he would do anything in his power to not lip sync a performance.)

Mad4stevie 10-24-2004 10:08 AM

Looks like she was "Milli-Vanillied". Her running off stage made me think of the performance where they were caught lip synching and their grammy was taken away!

I would love to know where she learned those embarrassing dance moves

This was the funniest SNLs in a long while!!!! The whole VP's Lesbian Daughter sketch had me rolling! And that Paris Hilton bit, ROTFL!?!

Ashlee took the cake! How awesome was that?!?! I wish it would happen to Britney.

diamondsnake 10-24-2004 10:32 AM

Oh my! I just watched the video clip and I almost feel bad for her. I feel worse for me because I actually purchased her record this summer! I wonder what Stevie would say if she saw this. What I want to know is, why did she need to lip sync? Her vocals on the record are gritty and flawed and I would hope she could at least carry a tune and be able to do such an easy song that didn't exactly require much vocal ability. This was sort of cringe-worthy and I feel bad for her. If more people find out this could really damage the career of someone who seemed grittier then say Britney Spears!

This SNL was pretty funny, but I couldn't believe she blamed her band! And for shame on SNL to allow lip-synching musical guests. I thought all musical performances were supposed to be "live".

Lee :)

Well, I like Ashlee. But dear, if you don't have the guts to sing it live, then get off the stage. She's got the resources to have the best vocal coach, musicians, and sound people at her disposal. And she wrote some of her songs (with a lot of help from John Shanks).

If you're afraid you're gonna get some... apparently really disturbing image when you download the files, you could just watch Faux News. I know, I know. But they've apparently been playing the screw-up all day. CNN, too.
