Do you ad lib?

When you're listening & singing along to album versions of tunes, do you ad lib stuff you've heard live?

Here are a couple of examples that I realized I do the other day:

GDW: I tend to yell "pick it up" in between the "go home"s now, ever since I heard it on a boot (one of the AHI benefits perhaps?)

Eof17: I usually do the "no the sea it does not change, it does not change, it doesn't" part. Also "slow SAD graceful flow..."

Gypsy: I always sing "little BIT of fear"

NGBA: I hold the "come down & see MMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE again" for a longer time.

The only song that I can think of that I do this to is TOo Far from Texas...

I think it was the AHI where STevie sang it "He might never...no I know better..."

SO I always sing it "I know better..." I love that....

I sing "Close your eyes...Sara" at the end of Sara. I don't know if that's a lyric or not but I don't think so. It sounds like something she's singing though and I think it's pretty because Sara kind of sounds like a lullabye and of course I think most of us know who Sara supposed is/was so a lullabye is fitting.

I always do, with almost every song...add harmonies that are in other parts of the song, or other versions, put in words that are in other versions...gaw, do i ever sing them regular  I'm always tryna figure out some harmony, or somthing, so it's really fun for me. I do sing a few just straighforward (gypsy comes to mind) but not too many...

Know What----I ALWAYS sing a version of Rhiannon that was on the Live Fleetwood Mac CD as is the same with Landslide...I wish both songs we just a little slower... On Rhiannon, it's a higher and longer note on Sara and Landslide=same thing. I prefer the live version because the whole band is slower-----maybe the drugs ... and she starts Rhiannan by saying" this is a song about a Welch Witch" not-this is a song about some fictional person I read about in a cheesy novel-I read in an airport....

maybe it was just a dream~~~eclipse~~

There are tons of them... but this one needs mentioning because I think I am the only person in the world who does it..

"Just like the white winged dove, sings a song, sounds like she's singin to ya"

...a la Red Rocks. I really like it.

I always here the "I wanna be with you everywhere" from the Tango dvd when I play the song.

goldie 10-08-2004 10:22 PM

I sing Christine's "new" lyrics from SYLM The Dance "Don't want to talk about it, don't want to think about it....oh...don't want to think about it anymore..." into any version of SYLM I play. It sounds cool because it's like I am singing it by myself and Lindsey is playing guitar just for me!

At the very, very end of Dreams, I always go ahahahahahahahah (I don't know how to spell that) but it's from Red Rocks Dreams.

OMG - what a GREAT thread!!!!!!

I have been known to, and gldstwmn can attest to this, sing what I consider to be perfect and, to put it kindly, "inventive" harmony very loudly in most FM songs

For instance - I repeat line after they are sung, I start them before they are sung, I make up a new harmony structure -

For example, CM sings "say you love me" and then I chant after "love me love me love me"

I willingly confess most of it is strange to the casual and usually horrified observer - but it works in my world

ad lib

I find that I just keep on singin......Dreams unwind-loves a state of mind....Don't you know....that dreams unwind and love is hard to find..mmmmmm dreams unwind, loves a state of mind...way after she is done and has gone on to something else... I am still in the dream phase
Maybe I think she should say it a fe more times and lieave out the "I know..."
we all know she knows....so why say it....
Just keep on saying~~~~Dreams unwind, loves a state of mind~~~
Did I mention, I love that line-ha

Stevie sez-

"Wake up in the morning, see your sunrise-
Loves to go down...."

Then I sing-

"You don't wanna see it..."

Sugar 10-09-2004 02:18 PM

I always add the "let me down again" line from the Live album whenever I'm singing Over & Over.

GREAT part, Great song, very good live.

WednesdaysChild 10-09-2004 09:08 PM

I sing that too! I think it's a great ad-lib.

And I thought Stevie sings "little bit of fear" live? Someone says that's not part of the song. I know it wasn't in the studio track....

Sorcerer386 10-10-2004 12:26 AM

I believe it is on The Dance that Stevie says, "a little bit of fear."

As for ad libs, I wonder, I didn't see too many (if any) ad libs that people make up on their own...that they didn't ever hear, they just sing it. For example, on Everybody Finds Out, each time after the second "I know you don't agree," I sing, "but soon you're gonna find out." It's so hard to explain how it fits in there over here, but the beat would kind of go, "daDA DA dada DA DA!" I like it because it sort of alludes to the title. Also, on Fall from Grace, whenever she sings "you just fall from grace," she sort of does that run of notes on grace. Well, you can hold on to the first note she sings on "grace," hold it out, until it gets (I think) twelve or thirteen beats past that, which then there's just these sort of three accented beats that go DA DA DA, to which I go "FALL FROM GRACE!" So it goes something like, You just fall from gra-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-ah-ah-ah-ah, FALL FROM GRACE!" You can try it, it works, but again it's hard to explain on here how to fit it in. Also, on Running through the Garden, on the second chorus, I sing it this way: "Running through the garden, i'm running in brilliant colors, here in my garden where i am imprisoned." Just a slight change, but I like it.

Yeah, but apparently we all know it, so...but I hardly have any videos, and I don't have Mirage, and I don't have a bunch of stuff, so it's hard to tell where i picked it up, but suddenly (seriously, right this second) i realized i then must've picked it up from the Dance, even though it was not on the CD but on the video...not to say that all you guys couldn'tve picked it up from somewhere else, but I don't think I did.... :)

YES! I forgot that one. I'm always surprised when I don't hear in on the studio version :)

Another one is I always tend to sing Dreams more like the version from The Dance - ...you know what you lost..."
