What magazines do you subscribe to?

Just a silly little question- what magazines do you subscribe to?

DrummerDeanna 09-13-2004 03:57 PM

I used to subscribe to Premiere Magazine, TV Guide Crossword Puzzles and US - in high school I was way into celebrities so I'd chop the magazines up and put pics all over my walls/locker/notebooks...typical really...

Now - I keep meaning to subscribe to TV Guide Crosswords - but haven't gotten around to it - I also might subscribe to glamour...haha

The Tower 09-13-2004 04:04 PM

These are the magazines I currently subscribe to:

Unzipped (!!)
Men
Instinct
Out

Wow! Is your mailbox big enough? I just bought a copy of Details and it seems almost like Cosmopolitan for men. Is it a gay magazine though? I didn't get that impression. But now that you mention it there were a lot of pictures of half way naked men.

sparky 09-13-2004 04:31 PM

Entertainment Weekly
Rolling Stone
Men's Fitness
Architectural Digest
Bird Talk
Emmy(free - prof mag)
Set Decor(free - prof mag)

Someone can now target market all of us. Though I don't want to see what kind of offers come The Tower's way. Hustler ?

Yeah, I like to read- and my current short attention span combined with my jaded attitute towards the recent lack of creativity/freshness within the literary world has kinda made me a magazine junky. I forgot my lifetime subscription to Rolling Stone.

No, technically, Details is not a gay magazine. However, all you have to do is read the damn thing to figure out which side of the fence they are marketing to. So much of the content is related to the gay lifestyle that it's laughable when they include some "I got it on with chicks and wasn't it great" article. I can't imagine any straight guy actually reading it- the eye candy is just exploded all over the pages of that rag.

Yay, i'm so glad!! do you know what kind? was it for an hour? Coincidentally, I finally did Yoga last night (long overdue) but i did it at home with a 20 minute workout for power flexibility. It's sooooo good for you, your whole body and mind. I really can't say enough. it's actually hard for me to do, to just even quiet my mind enough to start, and also, my whole life i've done sports that work against flexibility - the back of my legs and hip flexors and just that whole thing are incredibly tight (though muscular :D ) All these things make me know that i really, really need yoga. Also i find that when it's hard for me to sit down and do my homework, it's best if i do yoga first, it calms and focuses my monkey mind enough so that i can concentrate on the boring law stuff.
I'm soooo glad you did it, keep it up!!!! you'll gain unimaginable benefits! And, I was gonna ask you, have you met any people yet? Maybe from this class you will....

The Nation (my all-time favorite!!)

Entertainment Weekly (one of my favorites, I totally love it. Always LOTS of good articles.)

Time (had it for years)

Daily Variety (more of a newspaper and VERY expensive at that!)

Premiere (not a favorite, but I got it free for a year)

Hustler (only because I <33333333333333333 Larry Flynt; I've honestly never read an entire issue. I do get a kick out of browsing for mentions of Jerry Falwell in it, though.)

Rolling Stone subscribers- Is this magazine any good? I almost want to subscribe because I love music but Fleetwood Mac seldom gets any articles or even mentions and it seems like Marykate and Ashley are on their cover every two weeks!

I had it for awhile and even though it had some pretty decent articles occasionally, I quickly tired of reading about Beyonce, Limp Bizkit, Hootchie Spears, and J Ho. And Jessica Simpson. Bleh.

RS has really been disappointing me for a while now. It has nice pictures and articles sometimes, but when it comes to actual music journalism, it's crap, IMO.

Men's Fitness has it's moments - though they have started to slant into that whole "How to get the hot chick, How to deal with your woman, Here's a bunch of hot chicks and what they want" kind of articles. Makes me smirk and turn the page. That's why I ditched Men's Health. I think they are trying to compete with HMV, Stuff, and those other soft core porn mags.

Yeah - I hope to keep it up - although next weekend I'm going to give Pilates a try and see how I like that - the legs and butt are a target area for me...so Pilates is appealing...but I want to keep doing the Yoga because I really liked the way I felt afterward....

As far as meeting people - nothing yet - but I've not made any real effort - I actually found this group called RATS (Rochester Area Twenty-Somethings) it's a young professional group - they do community volunteer stuff, social night etc....it's for random young, out of college professionals...it is NOT a singles group lol...but I'm going to go to an event they're having this weekend- hopefully I'll meet some interesting people that way...

I figure I have to go to the yoga more than once but eventually could meet people there - they all seemed like a neat group...

How long have you been doing yoga?

golddustwoman77 09-13-2004 08:51 PM

I have to keep up with fashion, so Cosmo, Glamour, Marie Claire, and Martha Stewart Living. I love to read music magazines too, but I don't subscribe to the ones I like. They are just too expensive to get every month in the mail. At over a hundred dollars for one year/per magazine, I'll just go to Borders and buy the ones I want. I love MOJO, Uncut, and Classic Rock. They're all British magazines. I guess that is why the subscriptions are so much!

That is a good idea. And, I mean, there are Buffy the Vampire Slayer magazines. If one little tv show that was canceled years ago can have an entire magazine, why not Fleetwood Mac?

Hello!!! And guess what you turn the page and find??? :] ANY magazine that has ads for "man to man phone action", mail order butt plugs and vintage "man on man XXX movies" (HELLLL-O!) is just NOT for straight dudes.
And yes ladies, Playgirl IS a soft-core gay rag. When all the models are gay, and the majority of the advertisements are gay, you can write off the commentary from the Editor and the horrible Harlequin romance masturbation stories.

-_-.

Buffy has a HUUUUUGE following. Like, seriously. It's inSANE. Not quite Star Wars & Star Trek-style following, but huge nonetheless. I've actually only seen one Buffy magazine, and that was back when I was in 5th grade. But they're still around.

The Spice Girls had a magazine at one point, too. I had an issue. Woot.

I loved it when Sean Hannity was bragging about being voted the most wanted TV news personality to pose for Playgirl during the DNC, then Al Franken walked up to him and said it must be quite an ego boost to have hoards of gay men wanting to see his "pee-pee."

Deanna, Pilates will kick your abs! It is SO intense a workout for your mid-section. I have several DVD's with different workouts on them and they are tough, but I love 'em. One of the workouts is only butt/thighs, but I haven't done it yet. I think you'll like it.

That sounds like what I'm looking for!! So perhaps I'll do the pilates for all that and yoga for relaxation and such...I get to go to all these class at my gym - they're all included in the price...so its fabulous!!!

Magazine subscriptions

What an interesting question! Well, I've subscribed to various magazines over the years, but currently I subscribe to:

Redbook - I really love this magazine. Great articles most of the time; great interviews with celebrities.

ESPN - I actually won a six-month subscription to this magazine, & I'm not really happy with it. It's mostly pictures & not articles. I won't be renewing it.

TV Guide - Maybe not exactly a magazine, but besides TV listings, they have nice articles in it.

Oh, I love Pilates. I tried Yoga & I couldn't lose anything. I got a Pilates video this past winter when I wanted to lose about five pounds. With this & changing my diet, I actually had to stop doing it since I'm more active in the summer. I was losing too much weight with riding my bike & walking my dog, all in my butt & thighs. And it helped my back. (I have osteoarthritis in my spine.) I may have to start it back up this winter if I start gaining weight again.

Lee :)

DeeGeMe 09-14-2004 02:52 PM

I'm a magazine addict. I subscribe to:

Allure
Elle
Entertainment Weekly
In Style
Lucky
Marie Claire
New York Magazine
People
Premiere
Real Simple
Self
Shopping, etc. (that's a new magazine that just debuted)
TV Guide
US
Vanity Fair
Vogue
Mother Jones
the Nation

Then I usually end up buying several more at the book store when I make my weekly visits there, mostly decorator magazines, along with Time and Newsweek, and uh. . .the tabloids. I have a weakness for In Touch and Star--lots of pictures that are easy to look at when I'm on the treadmill.

And btw, I have one of those pilates reformer things. I haven't used it lately, but sure need to. It is very relaxing and does help give you more flexibility and definition.

Do you know how hard The Nation is to find in a bookstore? I had to subscribe to it to ever even get my hands on an issue! Of course, if I didn't live in Repugville. . . it might be a different story. There are always 999 conservative publications around but it's mighty damn hard to get your hands on a liberal magazine in these parts!

I'm happy to report that Hannity did NOT win. Keith Olbermann from MSNBC's Countdown won. I love KO. He actually admitted on his show last week that he didn't vote for B/C in 2000. Like we hadn't already figured that out from watching his show. He rocks!
