Farewell, Save Me A Place.
Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today to say goodbye to one of our favorite songs.. no, indeed our most loved song of our most loved album: Save Me A Place.
Save Me A Place, as you all know, has had to leave the TuskSurvivorgame at a much to early age, and it's passing has touched many of us. I would like to give every friend of Save Me A Place a chance to come forward and share with us your fondest memories, stories, etcetera. Thank you so much for coming by & paying your respect to Save Me A Place. Please dress & behave appropriately. Flowers are welcome. Gerald, perhaps you would like to start..? |
SMAP was and is my favorite song off of Tusk. It demonstrated and still demonstrates LB at his best in his brilliant new approach to harmony and structure. It also had and has pining lyrics that rank amongst his best.
RIP SMAP :) |
Time to take our anger and dedicate it to making sure either The Ledge, Tusk, What Makes You Think, or I Know I'm Not Wrong take that bitch home.

O, HN, TITMRTIHES!!!! WSOTMG, IPAFT!
Smap, I hardly knew ye...rest in peace... |

I'd love to start Mari, but...
1. some are earlier
2. I'm late 3. Still speechless .........but ready to slaughter Sisters of the Moon. Great song but the equivalent of the "Look how mystic and bigger than life am I"- mentality, and therefore the complete opposite of the touching, 100% emotion without puiking your guts out-brilliance of Save me a Place. I can't believe how hard we fought for it. Even though I would rank Storms and IKINW above the little diamond, I'm proud of us for what we tried to achieve. And to be honest, I did it for our "I know better-punk"-Carne, too. gerald |

As for "Save Me a Place," I get to live out my fantasy of Fleetwood Mac transmogrifying into Peter, Paul & Mary! I love it! Plus, you can sing "Stardust" to the chords. |

And the mourning? Well, it's our party and we cry if we want to, cry if we want to, cry if we want to. You would cry too if it happened to you. |

Now, don't get me wrong, I agree that it doesn't stand out amongst Stevie's 'Tusk' tracks, because of its similarities to "Rhiannon" and "Gold Dust Woman"... but in the lyrics to "Sisters," Stevie is commenting on "The Image," and how people expect certain things from "The Image," and always demand that she live up to "The Image," and yet they don't really know (or care to know) her as a person at all. It's just as touching as the feelings Lindsey was conveying in the lyrics to "Save Me A Place," though I think that gets lost in the translation. Both writers were talking about the pressure they felt to live up to certain things, when those things were draining them of their energy. "Don't know why I have to work... don't know why I can't play." "They like to wrap her in velvet... (but) does anyone know her name?" Those two songs are good examples of the different approaches Lindsey and Stevie take to the same subject matter. One is stark and to-the-point, while the other is cryptic and steeped in imagery. In the end, it's more the execution that leaves some of us flat... on one, or both, of the songs. |
I admit...I did contribute to this song's death, as I simply do not like it. It is the only Lindsey song I truely do not like. I am though, switching sides today, as I will support all other Lindsey songs :) Truce?

harsh comments but all in good sports, Johnny:

By the way, you're hijacking Mari's thread. Pay respect. We're wearing black today. talking about depression, Smap is buried, please invite Carne back so we can mourn some more. ;) |

The Sisters of the Moon must die, followed by Sara and Beautiful Child and Angel. Storms has to be in the top five, though. But I will sacrifice it to save a Lindsey song. :xoxo:

"Sisters" could be one of those songs she was referring to in later years, when she said that some of her Mac material didn't turn out the way she would have wanted. Lyrically, I think she has to reference "the image" in order to make her point. In her own way, she's romanticizing exactly what it is she's criticizing. Looking at the lyrics, I think she's even telling us that she bought into "the image" just as much as anyone else had ("she was dark at the top of the stairs... and she called to me...."), but its appeal was limiting and constraining. I think it's deeper than people give it credit for. |

What I was referring to was your interpretation of the lyrics, Le Stew, not the production. The lyrics were not out of her hands. Quote:

If she plays up "the image," she's criticized. If she downplays it, she's criticized. Like I've said... damned if you do, damned if you don't. And one could say that while Lindsey complained about having to work and not being able to play, it was by his own design that he later spent years on end slaving away in his home-studio. ;) In those two songs, they were both expressing their dissatisfaction in regards to the negative aspects of fame... and even though they both sought that success before and after those songs were written, I don't feel it weakens the poignancy of what either of them was expressing. |

I was watching the show, enjoying the music and looking at what was going on on stage. But surely not what kind of shoes she has... Although I clearly was there because I wanted to see Lindsey I was pleasantly surprised by the entire performance- I liked what she did there and she was in fine form too. The annoying fake romantic opera they were performing was the only bad thing about it. |

It is my interpretation... nothing more. I just happen to think that the lyrics to "Sisters" are just as poignant as the lyrics to "Save Me A Place," when you look beyond the surface, and that the songs represent two points of view on the same types of problems. |

Maybe she was writing about Stevie Nicks in Janis Joplin's tragic predicament. Maybe it all tied in somehow with her vocal exorcisms for "Rhiannon" onstage. There was something about being on the verge of fame that was an even heavier trip for Stevie than the fame itself when it finally came. It's a remarkable song in many ways (although I don't really see this musical similarity between it & "Rhiannon"). I'd also like to know how that reference to Inge came about. Did she read the play? Did she watch the Robert Preston movie & just swipe the title because she liked the sound of it? |
