Best use of the word, "WELL"

Well, must you keep your secrets....
Well, I know you'd like to come away...
Well, this (thread) could be a whole lotta trouble...

Wellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll..............I don't think you do!!!!!!!!!

Johnny Stew 08-25-2004 05:41 PM

For me, it's the ending of the extended version of "Planets Of The Universe," which Stevie punctuates with a very effective, "wey-elllllllllll!!!" :D

amber 08-25-2004 05:45 PM

Gor, when does Stevie NOT use well?
But, my favorite (that i can think of) is:
ohwellif I hopeandipray well maybeitmightworkout somedaaayyyy.

 That's the one I prefer together with:
"You know that I loved you then
Oh, well"

Some others that I love:
"You're asking me to trust you
Well, there's little of that around"

"Well, her little tin soldier
Is covered with rust and
Your beautiful eyes...
Whoa, well they look sad to me now
And I don't even know why you left me"

"Well, I got the message: stay among the living"

"Well, well, they say that this is just a dream... ooh, well... well, I don't want to hear that.... well, Mick says, 'Stevie, well, this just is just one more link in the chain, and do not break the chain, please'... and I say... and I say... well, I have to believe him...." ;)

It's definitely excessive in that performance, but other times it's effective.
I especially like the one you picked, from "Seven Wonders." :D

I know, it's so funny, I always laugh at stevie for that, and it also makes it easy for me to sing to her, cause I can just supply a well, or perhaps a yowl, and i've filled in the space effectively  And I always know what she's gonna say! (for the songs that are new to me)
Oh, Stevie, will the amusement never end? Will the fascination never end?
*sigh*

None, I think the use of "well" is grating and lazy.

But if I had to pick, I'd agree with Le Stew. :wavey:

jbrownsjr 08-25-2004 07:10 PM

sometimes she will say

That's the one!

And I know everyone here loves "Welllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll you know me better than I know myself."

Hillary

Wild_Heart03 08-25-2004 11:43 PM

First and foremost would be "Well I know you'd like to come away, but baby you can't come". After that...

- "Well I've run through rainbows and castles of candy"

-"Dusty words lying under carpet
Seldom heard well must you keep your secrets"

...and probably a few more I'm not thinking of right now!

TheBlueLamp 08-26-2004 02:43 AM

I love Stevie and her "well"s. When I sing along to her songs I find myself adding in "well" even if Stevie doesn't sing it.

I love Welcome to the Room...Sara and all its "well"s

My favourite would be "Well as well as you knew her" :D

And on the more serious side I love "Weeeelllll I can see that expression..." at the very end of Talk to Me. The last minute of TTM has a few good "well"s in it, I think.

I had forgotten that. "Talk to Me" is a really good "well" song in general. But I know that some would say that "good well song" is an oxymoron. :D

Not bashing, just an observation...

I just don't think Stevie can top Lindsey's or especially Billy Burnette's:

Oh-h-h-h Wellwellwellwellwelllllllllllllllllll!

She swings around on the second story...
"I'll get down," she says
Well there is no fire burning...just a soul crying

MacMan 08-26-2004 04:47 PM

Here's a fantastic display of... well - "WELL"

So today, she says,
Well, I've changed my mind.
That's a woman's right, they say.

Well, I -- (Well, I --)
Well, I'm frightened,
And I'm lost.
And I can't give you up.

Well, I need you now.
Well, I'm broken-hearted.
Well, I broke down like a little girl.

How about that funky stoned-out guitar and drum demo version of Julia?? I L-O-V-E that one, it is the ultimate "WELL" song.
"Well so you, well you found a queen without a king, well in fact well everyone here loved her, welllllll." :blob1:

sparky 08-26-2004 11:39 PM

A thread celebrating my biggest Stevie lyric pet peeve ! There is no good use of the throwaway word "Well". Each "Well" I hear only makes me yearn for a word that had real emotional impact or signified something. ANYTHING. It's Stevie's version of "Like" or "You Know". Oh, to excise that word from her vocabulary like the tumor it is !

Eh, just embrace it and have fun! ;)

Stevie's a quirky character, that's what makes her so cool! :D

Kelly 08-27-2004 08:08 AM

Well...

"Well I never did not love you, I never did run from you, in a dream I said to you...."

Another one I really like is...
"WELL, you can dedicate your pain to him" from Thrown Down.

Stevie is quirky and that is why I love her so much! I also get a kick out of her use of the word "whoa"..it's hysterical.

Well there is magic all around you, if I do say so myself...

"Well I know I could have loved you but you would not let me"

"Well I can still hear you saying you'd never break, never break the chain"

"Well I think I had met my match"

JS, I knew I'd get a response outta you on this one, but your speed was especially impressive in this instance.

desertangel 08-28-2004 01:27 AM

Disk 3 has been going around and around in my changer lately. Most of those songs I love to sing along with. So the "well" lyric that immediately came to mind was "Well I found You," for no other reason than the song it is contained in. There are a handful of Stevie's songs that absolutely go off the Richter scale for me and this is one of them...

You're not my friend, you're not my love
And this is something that we really don't discuss
If there is no time, and there is no place.
And, if there was, well, you'd never leave a trace
And as all arch angels do to you
And as all arch enemies will finally do to you, too
Well, I found you

Laura

Kelly 08-28-2004 07:00 AM

Well

I have never felt like I "really" understand what Stevie meant with those arch angel lines. Not that I "really" know what she means in most of her songs :. ), but I just do not fully get those particular lyrics above. (just the arch angel lines confuse me) Anyone care to give me their interpretation?
