Cyndi Lauper - WOW!

10th row for $44 - can't beat it! I do have pics, but can't post them yet due to computer trouble. This is long, feel free to skim...

She was unbelievable! If you get the chance to see her, DO IT! Cyndi has more energy now in her 40's than I have at age 29. She was literally leaping across the stage, dancing, stomping her feet, all while singing beautifully (take THAT you Britneys/J.Lo's/whoever defends lip syncing due to their dance routines being too exhausting to sing at the same time!)

The woman tore it up for 2 full hours in The University at Buffalo's Center for the Arts (I think it seats 1500, tops - it was about 3/4 full.) She started in black Manalo pumps for "At Last" (great, but Stevie's is still better, lol.) After that, she whipped off her shoes & did most of the rest of the show barefoot. She talked with people in the audience between songs, sat down on the stage for a tune, crawled up & down the stairs, jumped up onto the piano for a while, & ran up the aisles in the audience several times (she was 3 or 4 rows directly in front of us at one point.) LOTS of audience interaction, it was great. Lots of hand shaking, hugs & accepting gifts. She actually laid across some people's laps for a few lines of a song.

She plays a lot of instruments too, which I never realized. Guitar & at least 2 other string instuments (forgive my ignorance, one was the flat box you set on a table & strum {harpsichord?} & the other looked like a double violin that she set on her lap & played {I've never seen this before}) plus some percussion too.

She did some new stuff from At Last (title track, Stay, Misunderstood...can't think of the others right now.) And some of her "newer" tunes (Sisters of Avalon, Shine.) The hits were the best - Money Changes Everything & Change of Heart (my fave) rocked HARD! She said "you can sing along to this one, it's French" & did a hilarious version of SheBop, with violin & accordian like a slow French ballad. All Through the Night & Time After Time - beautiful. I Drove All Night was very sexy, I like her version SO much better than Celine's remake.

She spoke about Ture Colors before she sang it, saying that Ann Murray turned it down first  (everyone chuckled at that one, including Cyndi,) and dedicated it to a good friend who died a while back from AIDS, all the while holding the rainbow pride flag. Lots of tears for that one. :distress: Girls Just Wanna...was at the end, made a bit more tolerable by having several audience members (many little girls) up on stage to dance & sing along.

Sorry so this is so long, but I was just so impressed by her performance. I would see her again in a heartbeat. And I will be buying the DVD ASAP! Highly recommended.

Paula

Great review - I was all psyched to see her open for Cher 2 years ago -but she twisted her foot in Houston or Dallas, and had to cancel her Austin appearance. :distress:

Glad you had fun!

I looooooove Cyndi! I hope she's coming here! During the great "Cyndi v. Madonna" debates of the early 80's, I was always on Cyndi's side
I love the song "Sometimes". Glad you had a good time!

The only opportunity I had to see Cyndi Lauper was when she was opening for Cher and she was fantastic! She did most of the show barefoot. It was at an outdoor amphitheatre and she ran back to the lawn section and sang parts of songs to them "way" out there and then ran back to the stage. She really was great and I'd love to see her again sometime--her energy is incredible!

And Amber, I always voted with the Cyndi side too in Cyndi vs. Madonna.

she fell off the stage in OKC at the Ford Center and had to have medical treatment for her injury at St.Anthony hospital up the road from the Ford...This happened the day before the Cher tour headed to Texas.

It is deader than a doornail in this office today. I mean DEAD. Other than that it's goin' pretty good. How about you?

How are you liking TOSOM? I haven't listened to it in a very long time.

Meh, it's ok.(OSOTM) fairly bland, in a good way. :D My boss is gone, so there is even less to do than usual. I love finding cleaning projects just to pretend i'm doing something... not.
Think i'll work on my resume and get a new @#$%^& job where i actually get to work!

I've been thinking about doing that myself, but the powers that be promise it'll get busier after Labor Day. It better or I'll be dead from the boredom of it all!

I guess that blandness is why I don't really remember TOSOTM. Although Whole Lotta Trouble is one of my favorite Stevie songs and most people hate it. I do love Rooms on Fire, too, but that's about it for that album.

Yarp. And of course I already had those from Timespace. It's ok backroundish - better than just backround, but not super passionate. The lyrics, i think, are pretty good though. I'm not too much of a lyrics woman, though :p

Amber, how do you like "Ooh My Love"? That's one of my favorite SN songs of all time, let alone on OSOTM... I just love it for some weird reason.

Paula, I'm glad you loved Cyndi! We all knew you would. You should really check out the At Last album- it's a GREAT record. I LOVE her versions of "Stay" and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" the best. And "I Drove All Night" is my favorite Cyndi track, and she does it so well live. Glad you had a great time!!

I know, a lot of people seem to like that one.I think it may be my least fav. so far. Isn't it in an obvious major key? Sorry! I'll listen again, of course. My fav. so far is Cry Wolf.

They just aired her Soundstage here the other night and I watched...totally blew me away. She was out in the audience interacting with the crowd, congo lining...not to mention, she had a string section (i love strings). Thanks for the review. Oh, and i'm PMng you back as we speak!

Yeah, I missed it since Buffalo PBS airs it at 1am on Friday nights - I'm either out or sleeping :(

I almost forgot to mention her band - incredible. Male drummer & pianist, female guitar & electric violin.
