1970's Top Ten

I'm curious about the songs people consider the top ten non-Fleetwood Mac of the 1970's. You know, the kind of song that you hear and say to yourself "Now that's an awesome song." Here's my list to get you started (in no particular order):

"You're So Vain" by Carly Simon
"Horse with No Name" by America
"Heart of Gold" by Neil Young
"Superstition" by Stevie Wonder
"Dream On" by Aerosmith
"Hotel California" by The Eagles
"(Don't Fear) The Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult
"Summer Nights" by Olivia Newton-John & John Travolta
"Band on the Run" by Paul McCartney & Wings
"Photograph" by Ringo Starr

Have Fun,
John

OK, I'll take your word for it. It seems like a 70s song to me. So let me plug in "Breakfast In America" by Supertramp to complete my Top 10. I checked that one and it was released in '79. Just barely a 70s song. :)

jwys_soapbox 08-08-2004 02:02 PM

Supertramp was great. I particularly love the Logic Song

I don't know John, but I'm sure we're "forgetting" a lot of greats from the 70s. I think you should have made it a top 20 or something. :) :wavey:

Great lyrics:

The Logical Song

When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful,
a miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so happily,
joyfully, playfully watching me.
But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible,
logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable,
clinical, intellectual, cynical.
There are times when all the world's asleep,
the questions run too deep
for such a simple man.
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
but please tell me who I am.
Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical,
liberal, fanatical, criminal.
Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're
acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable!
At night, when all the world's asleep,
the questions run so deep
for such a simple man.
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
but please tell me who I am.

Maybe it's best to keep it to a top 10. Be more interesting to see what some others come up with. :)

jwys_soapbox 08-08-2004 03:22 PM

Well, I dragged out my old Supertramp best of collection and I'm listening to it now. I'd forgotten how wonderful their music is. Another band that I love is Steely Dan. I'd like to add "The Logical Song" and "Do It Again" to my list as honorable mentions. Most of SD's music is great, but "Do It Again" is the pinnacle.

I was just thinking about Do It Again last night and how it must have been one of the most played songs of all time in the 70's along with FM's songs.

It is a great song! One of my favorites, in fact, I have so many favorite songs from that time that I don't think I can narrow it down to a couple...

Ooooh, those are some good picks there. I'd add Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty and just about anything Steely Dan released (the Can't Buy a Thrill & Aja albums in particular).

Baker Street was played a lot on the radio. That song reminds me of the beach. Gary Wright's Love Is Alive was another one and of course, Dream Weaver.

I think we need a revision from you my friend. "Running Down a Dream" is an 80's song and you listed "Fight the Good Fight Twice."

As for the rest, we sure have a lot of Zep fans. It's surprising how varied people's tastes are. I wonder if there is some thread of commonality that runs through your choices? If mine has one, it's probably the use of harmony vocals that suggests a Beach Boys influence.

John

Hawkeye 08-09-2004 04:21 PM

I had to idea about runnign Down a Drain. And Fight the Good Fight was listed twice not becuase It's my favorite of the bunch, but because I'm an idiot. But it's good cause that freed up some room for one more song. I added Free Bird.

This is just an "of the moment - off the top of my head" list.... there are far too many great songs from the 70's (the best decade music ever had) to list. Besides, I'm intentionally leaving FM off the list cuz this is in "Chit Chat"

1) Blue - Joni Mitchell
2) Just the Wine - Heart
3) Company - Rickie Lee Jones
4) Pretty Maids in a Row - Eagles
5) All is Fair in Love - Stevie Wonder
6) Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight - James Taylor
7) Kings and Queens - Aerosmith
8) Patiently - Journey
