Break Down of Rock a Little

AMAZING: None really :wavey:

REALLY GOOD: No Spoken Word and The Nightmare,

GOOD: Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You

OK: Rock a Little, Talk To Me, If I Were You

Not Good: I can't wait, Impreial Hotel, Some Become Strangers.

SUCKS: Sister Honey, I Sing for the Things.

easily her worst album

Johnny Stew 08-06-2004 10:53 PM

To Run Over The Stones & Down To The Sea For: I Can't Wait, Rock A Little (Go Ahead Lily), I Sing For The Things, Talk To Me, No Spoken Word, If I Were You, Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You

To Run Up The Stairs & Down The Hall For: The Nightmare (WAY better in its "special remix" form though), Imperial Hotel, Some Become Strangers

To Run Through The Garden For: Sister Honey

"Run For Your Life," Cried The Mad Hatter: None

GardenStateGirlie 08-06-2004 11:31 PM

Easily her worst album? Are you kidding me? It's one of my favorites.

I Can't Wait - absolutely amazing sound, IMO. It's catchy, upbeat and I hope that one day she'll put it back on the setlist because the song owns live.

Rock A Little - I love the song but even I will admit, the vocals are a bit sketchy at some points. However, it's what makes the song so unique. Not to mention, Sharon Celani gives some stellar backing vocals.

Sister Honey - fun beat, cool vocals, love the guitar. I love the song. Who else can use the lyrics "and she'll go fast like a jetplane and then fast like a star stream..." and make it totally rock?

I Sing For The Things - beautiful vocals and beautiful lyrics ("i'll take off my cape for you...i'll take down my hair for you...anything that you want me to do my love..." *le sigh*...gorgeous...)How can you NOT like it? :distress:
Sheesh.

Imperial Hotel - okay. without sounding like megabitch ...before you dis the song? make sure you can spell "imperial" correctly :p ;) I love the song and have to defend it. That is all. Carry on. :xoxo:

Some Become Strangers - I think it's quite possibly her best vocal on the album. Beautiful harmonies by Stevie and the girls and solid lead vocals from Stevie. Even though she didn't write the song, it's one of my favorites and always will be.

Talk To Me - classic Stevie vocals and I love the inclusion of the sax on this particular track. Another song I'm seldom tired of.

The Nightmare - "thrown down from the arms of sleep She fell through the ivory morning..." I love the lyrics. Not sure what Stevie did and what Chris did but it's a standout for sure. The only thing that creeps me out is Maria Vidal's robotic "this.is.not.the.world" with a Spanish twang. I love the song.

If I Were You - it's dripping with 80s goodness and i.love.it. The whole synth/guitar/tambourine combination works well and again, i'm in love with the lyrics and the vocals...especially the "woah's" in the chorus.

No Spoken Word - i really have nothing to say about the song other than it rocks. "let's make a deal here.."

HAEWAFY - after seeing it live in 98' a few times...especially the last show A Day In The Garden and crying my eyes out with Stevie, I grew an even larger appreciation for this song. It's just beautiful and she sounds beautiful.

Wild_Heart03 08-06-2004 11:57 PM

Hardly her worst... in fact its my favorite of hers.

Awesome- I Can't Wait, HAEWAFY, Talk To Me, If I Were You
Great- The Nightmare, Imperial Hotel, Some Become Strangers
Good - Rock A Little, I Sing For The Things, No Spoken Word, Sister Honey
Sub Par - none, actually

Gift from the Gods: Rock A Little (Go Ahead Lily), I Sing For The Things, Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You

Good songs: Talk To Me, No Spoken Word, Imperial Hotel

So-so: Some Become Strangers

Uhhhhhhh: The Nightmare, If I Were You

Should not have been here: I Can't Wait (hate it with a passion), Sister Honey (what was she thinking)

Not really a favorite album, still it has good songs. But too 'synthy' to my tastes.

Well, 'The Wild Heart' is my favorite... but 'Rock A Little' and 'Trouble In Shangri-La' are tied for second-place. And sometimes they're in a three-way race for #1. :)

Your review made me decide for sure that i'm gonna get RAL first! Of course i already know I love I Can't Wait, and Talk to Me.

Simply the best: Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You

Great: Rock A Little, Sister Honey, Imperial Hotel, Some Become Strangers, The Nightmare, No Spoken Word (+ One More Big Time Rock And Roll Star)

Good: I Can't Wait, Talk To Me

Ok I guess: If I Were You (awful lyrics)

Claripup 08-07-2004 05:52 PM

So easy... I love every single track on this album... except Rock A Little, Which I do like... but the demo version I have on my compy is soooooooo much better. I will, however, admit that when I first got this CD I wasn't overly impressed... but it has grown on me, and has become my favorite "offical" album.

Gypsy3 08-07-2004 08:21 PM

Amazing: I Can't Wait, Talk To Me, The Nightmare

Great: No Spoken Word

Good: Sister Honey, Imperial Hotel, Some Become Strangers

Okay: Rock A Little, I Sing For The Things

Not A Favorite: If I Were You, Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You

blinker12 08-07-2004 09:56 PM

Fandiddlytastic: Some Become Strangers

Very good: Imperial Hotel, Rock a Little, I Sing for the Things, Has Anyone Ever Written (though I hate its production... too synthy)

So Bad It's Good: Sister Honey

Passable: Talk to Me, I Can't Wait, If I Were You

Icky: The Nightmare, No Spoken Word

I think this is her worst album, too, but I listen to it more than some others. How's that? Because it's light as air and good for a little mood boost.

The Tower 08-08-2004 02:29 PM

Greater God: Talk to Me, Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You?

Lesser God: No Spoken Word

Demi-god:

Human: Rock A Little, I Sing For The Things, I Can't Wait

Spermatazoa: Imperial Hotel, Some Become Strangers, If I Were You, Sister Honey

Wart on the ass of a spermatazoa: The Nightmare - it IS a nightmare and it's the worst thing she's ever released!

jadegypsy 08-08-2004 09:26 PM

Rock a Little

Oh my second fav album tied w/TISGL

Best: RAL, SH (just love the groove), ISFTT, TTM, HAEWAFY (one of her very best)

Great: ICW, IH, SBS

Okay: NSW, TN

Why did she have to record this: If I were You (skip this one)

Jason T. 08-08-2004 09:40 PM

It's my second favorite album, tied with TISL; THW is my favorite.

Makes me drop to my knees and cry out to the Lord in all its beauty: "Rock A Little (Go Ahead Lily)," "The Nightmare," "Some Become Strangers," and "If I Were You."

Good songs, not great...but not terrible: "Imperial Hotel," "Talk to Me," "Has Anyone Ever...," and "I Can't Wait."

Not her best moment: "I Sing for the Things" and "Sister Honey."

I haven't heard "No Spoken Word."

GypsySorcerer 08-08-2004 10:20 PM

Great: I Sing for the Things, HAEWAFY

Good: Talk to Me, No Spoken Word, If I Were You

Okay: Rock a Little, Some Become Strangers, I Can't Wait

Tolerable when drunk: Sister Honey, Imperial Hotel

Vomit-Inducing: The Nightmare

I don't care for this album much at all. Vocally, she just wasn't there.
:sorry:

diamondsnake 08-08-2004 11:14 PM

What's everyone's beef with The Nightmare? I think this song is really cool- I love the vocal. And the return of the "drownded in the sea" line.

shane 08-08-2004 11:54 PM

and rock she did....

Songs that rock: I Can't Wait, Rock A Little, Sister Honey, Talk To Me, HAEWAFY, If I Were You, No Spoken Word, The Nightmare (I agree with Johnny Stew on this one)

Songs that are ok: Imperial Hotel, Some Become Strangers

Song she could have left off: I Sing For The Things (I skip this song almost everytime)

dissention 08-09-2004 10:14 AM

Great: No Spoken Word, Some Become Strangers, I Can't Wait

Good: If I Were You, Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You, Talk To Me (awful lyrics, though)

Vomit and Seizure Inducing Sounds That Could Possibly Raise the Dead and Be Torturous Enough To Get Saddam To Plead Guilty: Rock A Little, Sister Honey, I Sing For the Things, Imperial Hotel (great vocal, lousy song), The Nightmare (one of her worst songs EVER)

I know Jake loves to beat on Lindsey for his "whisper" vocals, but even he couldn't defend Stevie's vocal (if you can even call it that!) on that putrid song.

I know! It seems to be one of the songs everyone dislikes. It's my favorite on the album -- probably tied with the title track.

Put 'er there, Jason. It's my favorite Stevie Nicks track ever, I guess . . . in a way.

It is the very essence -- the quintessence, you might say -- of my personal fiction of Stevie. It speaks to me, dudes, it speaks to me.

cliffdweller 08-09-2004 01:19 PM

This is by far Stevie's worst solo album....well...maybe it's tied with Street Angel, I have yet to decide!

GOOD: Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You, Rock a Little, Talk to Me,

OK: I Can't Wait

CAN DO W/O: the rest of the album

Sorry!

Johnny Stew 08-09-2004 01:36 PM

"The Nightmare" is probably the epitome of what Gaius would consider to be "excess bordering on self-parody," because of its references to ivory mornings, dreams, nightmares, storms, the moon (and her sisters), as well as being taken prisoner, being blinded by the light of the day, and drowning in the sea of love.

And yet, it's all so perfectly "Stevie." I think David once said that it's like Stevie's entire essence encapsulated in one song.
I believe he also said it's the "'Wuthering Heights' of Stevie's songs," and that's a pretty terrific description.

I guess it's "too much" for some, but I love it (though I greatly prefer the "special remix," from the "I Can't Wait" maxi-single). :)

Hawkeye 08-09-2004 01:48 PM

The Nightmare is one of only 2 songs that I really like from Rock a Little. The other is No Spoken Word.

That remix makes it a bit more tolerable, you're right.

I don't where to begin looking for it, but there was a post from David where he pretty much said he loved the song but that it was rather incomprehensible. I liked that post.

I always thought the actual song RAL sounded as though she smoked a blunt, 10 cigs, and then did a line before recording. I still maintain it has fabulous Sharona backing vocals which are more than likely the reason I keep listening to it. And yes, I agree with Jake...Lindsey does do the whisper vocals quite often. If it wasn't for the fact that i'd heard She Smiled Sweetly before he recorded it, i'd have no idea wtf he was saying. He has a bad habit of doing it but I don't mind all that much...it's what he does. At least i'll never confuse him for another artist (a la boy bands)

I like Sister Honey. I just think it's an upbeat and fun song. :sorry: You're such a Debbie Downer :distress:

 I sure pissed on your party cake by the looks of it, darling.

I agree about some of Lindsey's vocals, though. For example, "I Want You." I've had the goddamned album for almost 15 years and I still don't know what the hell he's singing unless I have the lyrics in front of me. And let's not even talk about the first time I heard "Murrow" and "Red Rover" from GOS. I thought I was having an acid trip.

Go Insane...that whole album kills me. I usually just listen to the title track, Slow Dancing, and Loving Cup. I am a fan of his music big time but much like you with Stevie's RAL, I can't get all the way into the album.
