Stevie changing lyrics live
Thinking (again) about lyrics. I'm wondering if anyone else thinks that Stevie changes her live lyrics in relation to what's going on in her life at the time.
Example: Outside the Rain: Initially, "it's one more link in the chain, I don't believe that" I take it as her telling everyone that she CAN be a successful solo artist, without Mac. She's not JUST part of the chain (the Mac). Mid 80's, live, "well, Mick says 'Stevie this is just one more link in the chain', and I say, 'I have to/do believe that/him/it'" Was this her telling everyone that she'd never break the chain? That she HAS TO believe that she'll always be a part of Mac? Other shows (later ones, if I recall, like late 80's/early 90's) she sometimes went back to "I can't/don't believe that/him." There was a lot of turmoil in the band at this time, was this a purposeful change in the lyric? Another obvious one would be "take your silver springs & dig your grave" on the BTM Tour (was that line done in Manchester only?) Any thoughts? Paula |

The first to come to my mind was Silver Springs "Still I am a fool."

How about:
"singin' it to ya!" on Red Rocks or the "sister, brother, sister, brother, etc. of the MOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!! (accompanied by the freak out gibberish)" on the Mirage tape? I like the last change up but the "singin' it to ya" is a little much. I much prefer the "yeah yeah's" inserted into the Belladonna tour EO17: "ooh baby, ooh, said yeah, yeah" and then the kick! Awesome!! I also like the Storytellers EO17 when she sings/talks, "and the sea does not change, it does not change it doesn't etc"....and also "I know what it sounds like, I know what it sounds liiiiiiiiiiiiike." Or how about the Stand Back change up? "One man, he did not fall, but he asked me for too much, I said take meeeeeeeee!" That's also a great one. And Jake, I love "still I am a fool" too!! :blob1: |
On the TISL tour, after 9/11, on GDW didn't she sing "well it's a heartless challenge, you pick your path and then you pay" directed towards Osama bin laden?

Actually one of my favorites is from the "Solid Gold" performance of Stand Back, during the last stanza she sings "One man said he could not stay/And I said well, darlin' goodbye/well GO AWAY!"
I've never heard her sing it that way any other time... |

Let me listen to the Bonner Springs show and see if that's it.
Also from the Homdel NJ show 8/1/94 from Rhiannon: All your life You've never seen A woman Taken by the sky Ohh but Rhiannon you say then she's gone and your life asks you why your life...(unintelligible) |

It's not Bonner Springs. A Day In The Garden maybe? That was a pretty impassioned performance.

Another lyrics change I love is the end of Beautiful Child: "I do love you, I still need you, I wish that you were mine". Just magic. :) Romy |

Are you sure it's not "whole wide world"? That's the been the standard line for the past nearly twenty years. I can't imagine her changing it at one show....and Kansas, no doubt. |
Pertaining to the original post in this thread, I think her originally saying, "Well, it's one more link in the chain, I know" was like her being told that it's one more link in the chain, and later in the RAL tour she seems to reveal Mick is the one that told her that. I always considered Outside the Rain to be about Mick (creature of the night) and their relationship, and in this part he's saying that all their relationship is is "one more link in the chain," but "[she doesn't] believe that." Of course, the song is sort of angry, and I thought they broke it off peacefully, so I may be wrong. Heh, probably am.

Perhaps also Stevie had in fact already "unofficially" mentioned the idea to Mick and knew he disapproved, but did not yet know to what extent? |
