Better Choices For LIB CD?

(Ugh. My second time posting this. I keep getting bumped off. )

Sorry if someone has posted this topic before, but I'm disappointed in many of the selections for the CD.

Of the songs on the DVD, which would you include on the CD? Remember, only 10 songs, 5 from Stevie & 5 from Lindsey. No Sara or IKINW (they're not on the DVD).

For me, I don't need another Landslide, Silver Springs, or Big Love so soon after The Dance when there are only 10 songs to be had, though I do like the new versions. On the other hand, IMO this Rhiannon is much better than 1997's. And I'm surprised that Beautiful Child was left off; as proud as Stevie supposedly is of it, I'm sorry she didn't fight (or fight harder?) to include it. It's not like it would have been a big risk.

My picks:

Eyes Of The World
Stand Back
Come
Beautiful Child
Second Hand News
Gypsy
Tusk
Rhiannon
Never Going Back Again
Goodbye Baby

My picks, in the perfect running order:

Eyes of the World
Gypsy
Beautiful Child
What's The World Coming To
Come
Rhiannon
Never Going Back Again
Gold Dust Woman
Goodbye Baby
Say Goodbye

Well, folks, fear not.

Releasing the CD with mostly songs that had already been released in other CDs was not an accident by any stretch. This was of course geared to making the highest possible profit off this material.

Rest assured that at least some of other Live in Boston tracks will be released commercially in a way to maximize profits.

Already, four more songs -- Say You Will, Gold Dust Woman, Never Going Back, and Don't Stop -- are available for download from iTunes as an EP. You may buy the songs individually for 99 cents apiece or as an EP for $3.96. The EP is titled Selections from Live in Boston, Vol. 1. Presumably there would be a Vol. 2 and perhaps more. I don't know if the exclusive arrangement with iTunes covers only a limited time, but I wouldn't be surprised to see this stuff show up in CD form in stores at some point.

So, you see, you may get your wish of having all these songs in audio format mixed professionally. You'll just have to keep paying for them.

Or you can just be happy with the decent downloads that someone made available a few weeks ago.

 Fleetwood Mac never fails to do exactly what I expect them to.

I downloaded all the songs and burned them onto a couple CDs, I don't need to buy 'em. Surely the band and the record company knew people would rip the tracks from the DVD before buying them separately.

I downloaded them all and burned them but they sounded terrible when I tried to play them. Did anyone else have this problem?

Terrible? Hmm... Mine sound OK. I cleaned up most of the ones I downloaded with my editing software though. Overally, the sound is pretty muddy, especially on the songs with a lot of instrumentation. But things like Say Goodbye and Never Going Back Again sound great.

Even the official released CD sounds muddy. It's just the way the live sound was built.

I did have a worse problem than that one - when I play the mp3s on my computer the sound is... adequate at best. When I play them on an external mp3 player, they are all speeded up so you actually hear Alvin & The Chipmunks' take on "Dreams", duetting with a sick cat or something. I really don't know what happened.

That's alright because I think Say You Will the song blows chunks live. Incredibly dull, flat, and monotonal.

Um. Can I slap you? I think it's adorable live. Stevie has an absolute ball performing the song during the show with all of her little hand motions and I have to say, I enjoy doin' em with her. I like the song live. Pfft. :p

Jake, I like your picks. I thought you didn't like Come??

The hand gestures are cute for what they are, but the song is just uninspired and boring. She sings it way too low, it sounds like she's talking instead of singing.

And who's idea was it to drag out the song by singing the chorus over and and over and over and over and over after the guitar solo? At least repeat a verse or something.

I guess i'm not quite sure what the problem is.
Whether they released the 'Live In Boston' set as a 2-DVD/2-Audio CD package (which they would have needed to do, in order to include all of the songs), or if they released a second CD separately, you'd still have to pay one way or the other.

'LIB' most assuredly would have cost more if they had released it in the first format I mentioned. As it is, people were already complaining about the price.

I think it's cool that they're offering the additional songs on iTunes. After all, no one is forced to buy them, but it's definitely nice to have the option, right?
And again, you would have had to pay extra for a 2-CD set anyway, even if it had been included from the outset.

My only complaint about the CD that came with the package, was that it was a mere 10-tracks. They could have fit about 17 or 18 on there. But even at that, there's no way they could have included every favorite song of every fan on one disc... some way, some how, someone is always bound to be disappointed.

Johnny Stew 07-20-2004 12:33 AM

Oh, and my picks for the CD:

1. Eyes Of The World
2. Say You Will
3. Second Hand News
4. Gypsy
5. Never Going Back Again
6. Landslide
7. Say Goodbye
8. Stand Back
9. Come
10. Beautiful Child

On the album I don't. Live it's better. Less muddled.

You could say the same for Say Goodbye. It sounds like talking through panting, not singing.
Why don't you just admit you're bitter she didn't sing Thrown Down?

That's my point. They could've included the good songs on the CD instead of giving a retread of The Dance. The only people who really are going to seek these out on iTunes and pay to donwload them are the big fans like us, that's why they have them for purchase; because they know that many of us would pay for 'em. But not me.

Say Goodbye has gorgeous vocals from the both of them, there's no comparison to the lackluster Say You Will.

As for Thrown Down, I'd love to hear it live, maybe it would breathe some life into it because it sure as hell doesn't have any on the album. :wavey:

I agree. Peacekeeper is as dull as wet crackers live. But it's infinitely better than SYW. I slog through the song just to hear the "You know all of our friends are gods" verse; it's greatness.

You probably would

Actually, since she's been sick, they raised the key in which SYW is played so she's singing it differently

Two-cd sets cost around 20 bucks these days, maybe as high as $24.

Releasing four-song EPs at four bucks a pop on iTunes is a reasonable price. But say they release two more of these, you will spend $12 if you buy them all, which is still pretty good. But FM could have put a fourth disc in the LIB package, or reconfigured the whole thing somehow, and charge less than 30 bucks for it.

We're not talking big bucks here either way. But piecemeal releases will ultimately cost the consumer more. That's basic economics.

If they had done what I preferred, a 2-disk DVD and a 2-CD audio release, they would have been ahead of the game. And we all would have run to the stores to buy both. So I guess ultimately what I see happening is a string of ill-advised economic decisions that in the end are probably not making them that much more money.

Really, they should be consulting me on this stuff.

Don't get me wrong. I love the iTunes concept. I don't really care about the packaging anyway and I'd rather not keep accumulating media. I only wish Lindsey would get his act together and release the GOS leftover tracks on iTunes, unless of course he is going to use them for the supposed upcoming record.

I'll readily admit that I'm bitter she didn't sing Thrown Down. I'm gonna sit outside her door and wait....probably dedicate my pain to her.

Don't get me wrong... I would have much preferred that the CD had very little doubling with 'The Dance,' but whether or not they included "the good songs" is highly debatable, given that it seems to most people, the ones they included are "the good songs."

It just would have been better if they had included different songs. :)

I personally have no problems with the live "Say You Will." I usually listen to the DVD with headphones on, and she sounds great to me... in fact, it sounds like she's singing in a slightly higher key there, than on the album.
And that sing-along chorus is greatness.

"Peacekeeper" is a song I love, but for some reason it goes nowhere when performed live. It starts out great, and then just stalls. It's a real drag... "Say You Will" is at least fun. :)

I was just thinking about this very topic while I was watching the DVD today (which gets better and better every time I watch it  )

My CD: (similar to many of yours)

1. Eyes of the World
2. Never Going Back Again
3. Rhiannon
4. Come
5. Gypsy
6. Say Goodbye
7. Gold Dust Woman
8. Beautiful Child
9. Stand Back
10. Go Your Own Way

It I could bump it up to, say, 14 tracks, I would also include Say You Will, Tusk, Second Hand News, and Goodbye Baby.

And I'm still annoyed by having to switch the DVDs. I know they could have easily fit it on one disc, and put the entire concert on 2 CDs. Oh well.

What exactly is the reasoning behind putting it on two DVDs if it wasn't a question of room?

BTW, I'm really into this version of Gypsy now. The only thing missing is dancing. Definitely a song that calls for twirls at the end.
