Most Romantic Movie Moments

I just rented Something's Got To Give & am so impressed by Diane Keaton. (Actually, I haven't finished watching it yet. I rented four movies since I've been stuck inside from oral surgery last week & lots of meds.) Anyway, this film, the drugs, and dissention's many fetching references to Lynne Cheney's romantic prose ( ) have me wondering, what are your favorite romantic movie scenes?

Diane Keaton was absolutely stunning in Something's Gotta Give- wasn't a fan of the film itself particularly, but she was stunning.

I'm a SUCKER for romantic movies, especially cheesy terrible ones. A few off the top of my head that I loooove-

-Bridget Jones. I must confess that I love watching her run after him in her undies in the snow. And that's a fabulous movie kiss.
-Speaking of Colin Firth. Pride & Prejudice. Anything with him smoldering. Swoon.
-Lost in Translation. I consider the final scene between Bill & Scarlett to be one of the most romantic, beautiful things I've ever seen on film.
-Return to Me w/ David Duchovny & Minnie Driver. No particular moment or scene. I just think it's a wonderful, funny, romantic film. It's charm is completely underrated.
-Sliding Doors. Her & John Hannah's first kiss is something I've always just loved.
-Everything about You've Got Mail, even though it's really a terrible and boring film. I LOVE IT and I don't care.
-Sense and Sensibility- Hugh's speech/proposal to Emma is just magnificent. I bawl like a child every single damned time.
-Moulin Rouge- I like the first "Come What May" (not the final climax version) so, so much.
-Emma- I love Gwyneth & Jeremy Northam's scene together where they tell one another how they feel. (I'm a sucker for Jane Austen, what can I say?)
-Amelie... I love her little fantasy about him picking up her baking ingredients. It's silly for me to like it best, I just do :)
-Ghost World... some people think it's weird, but I get all mushy and upset and despondent because of the scene when Thora Birch & Steve Buscemi get it on (how romantic of me to say it that way!)
-I love Secretary. I think it's one of the sweetest, most engaging romantic films I've ever seen. Most people don't get it when I call it romantic or a great love story- but it is :) I love when he comes to get her from his office and makes her drink like a frappucino to regain her strength... lol
-The buildup, first kiss, and love scene in Cold Mountain are unbelievable. I wasn't a fan of the movie as a whole, HATED the book, but the two of them... it was so completely compelling.

Oh, and a couple of TERRIBLE ones- I thoroughly enjoyed the Notebook (TERRIBLE book, TERRIBLE film, but still), IQ with Meg Ryan & Tim Robbins, and then a terrible film with Jude Law called Music From Another Room or something like that- with a kiss with him and Gretchen Mol. She's a terrible actress, the movie is horrible, but the kiss was wonderful. I mean, it was bordering on completely terrible- they even play Savage Garden's "Truly Madly Deeply" and I STILL loved it.

Told you I was a sucker for the romantic movies!

I haven't seen 95% of the movies you listed, but I did like Emma. The two times I was forced to sit through Sleepless In Seattle on TV I fell asleep before it could really hurt me. ;)

I HATE Sleepless in Seattle. I've been told I'm supposed to turn in my womanhood card for not liking it, but I just don't. I can't help it!!

I had to go back to reread your original post because I was sure you had listed it. But no, it was You've Got Mail, the other insomnia cure. :)

hayley 07-14-2004 10:46 PM

They're pretty much the same movie, just e-mail instead of letters, or whatever the hell they had in Sleepless in Seattle! So who knows why I love one and hate the other ?

And are you split on Joe Vs. The Volcano? I haven't seen that one either. The whole Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan thing has passed me by.

- Jake

hayley 07-14-2004 10:59 PM

I haven't seen it in a long time. I remember liking it but not being sure why on earth I DID like it.

I did see The Terminal last weekend. I heart Tom Hanks, but Meg... meh.

I still can't look at Tom without thinking Buffy & Hildegarde. I think he's overrated.
I love Meg in When Harry Met Sally, though.

movie moments

Hard to think of them here but... and yes some are very sappy...

Moulin Rouge: The part where they are on the roof sing "Your Song" and the other songs...

Forest Gump: "This is my Jenny..."

Star Wars: "I Love you...I know"

Titanic: yeah I know gag...but i do love the Irish Jig sceen.

As Good as it Gets: You make me want to be a better man... great line there.

Pretty Woman: He comes riding up in a white limo at the end...priceless.

Spiderman: Best kiss award...

Fabulous Baker Boys: Piano Sceene

I haven't seen Sleepless in Seattle so no comment there, and I didn't care for You've got Mail...

Explain this to me. I never got the big deal. So he's upside-down & they're wet. I'm not trying to insult your taste, obviously most people agree with you, judging by what a big deal the sequel makes about that kiss. Just trying to understand. (Maybe it's just that I didn't like Kirsten Dunst much in the first one. )

This really got me, and I am not exactly a sucker for romantic movies. I bawled like a baby through half that film. Helped I guess, that I was hopelessly, idiotically in love at the time(the object of said affection sitting next to me during the movie). I have the dvd, and refuse to watch it again. Just can't put myself through it.

I'd just die to see a PBS special on "Sisters." I envision a butch Sigourney Weaver sharing her bed with a prissy Ellen, speaking of her "ivory pillows" in a breathless voice with just the smallest hint of lust. Lynne Cheney could play the chief prostitute, while Oily Dick can play the fat chick in the wagon who's dying of syph. I see an Emmy.

LOVE both of those movies!!!!!

Secretary rocked. I love James Spader and Lesley Ann Warren ahs always been a favorite of mine in anything, especially in Clue and Victor Victoria. Maggie Gyllenhal should've won an award for that movie, too.

And Bridge Jones cracks me up everytime. The sequel comes out in November. :xoxo:

Anything with Diane Keaton is fantastic, especially Baby Boomer. I thought her and Sam Shepherd made one of the best onscreen couples ever.

Check out In the Cut. Meg Ryan's first porn movie. :wavey:

I couldn't believe that Jennifer Jason Leigh and Mark Ruffalo actually signed on to be in that flick. They should leave it off their resumes.

Hocake. Can I just say that when I finally realized what the movie was referencing, I gave a big old WTF?!? Glad I didn't pay to see that one.

GardenStateGirlie 07-15-2004 09:13 AM

Possession starring Gwenyth Paltrow, Jeremy Northam, Aaron Eckhart and Jennifer Ehle. It's just a great film to begin with but when Ash and Christabel FINALLY meet each other at the train station.... *le sigh*....

I was gonna mention Possession but I thought my list was already way, way, way too long !

I think Jeremy Northam & Jennifer Ehle's love scene in that film is breathtaking.

CarneVaca 07-15-2004 09:52 AM

Dudes, you're all wrong.

The quintessential love scene of all time is when Elizabeth Shue gives Nick Cage the booze flask in Leaving Las Vegas.

Unconditional love. Even if it means you're gonna die.

GypsySorcerer 07-15-2004 10:04 AM

-The Way We Were: Streisand brushing the hair out of Redford's forehead as they say goodbye one last time

-As Good as it Gets: Besides the aforementioned "You make me want to be a better man" scene, Melvin's monologue convincing Carol to stay with him....then his forgetting to step over the crack on the sidewalk.

-Forrest Gump: When Forrest gives her his Medal of Honor

That's a real Carne thing to say.

That was a great flick, albeit a very depressing one. Shue is a beauty, too bad she doesn't make more movies.

It blew chunks, which was a shame because the book was fantastic. Meg Ryan is one of the worst actresses ever. And the worst actor award goes to Mark Ruffalo's mustache.

They always told me about this movie as a remake of the Cary Grant /Deborah Kerr movie (An affair to remember, I think). But it is not.
Anyway I was dissapointed about SIS. I expected something better

Villavic 07-15-2004 11:35 AM

My fave moments

- Moonstruck. I LOVE CHER in this movie. IT has many romantic moments.
- Pretty Woman. Another fave. The night in San Francisco, she in red dress, the jet, the opera, It's a Cinderalla story but beautiful
- Gone with the Wind. The kiss when Rett leaves Scarlett after leaving Atlanta
- Cousins. I loved Isabella Rossellini in this movie.

DrummerDeanna 07-15-2004 11:47 AM

Well to avoid some listed above - which I like a lot of:

-The end of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves...where Marian says something like, "You came for me, you're alive!" and Robin says, "I would die for you" and they kiss...it so gets to me every time...I love it

-The end of The Other Sister...so cute!

-Where the Heart is - when she drives across the country to tell Forney she loves him....and he's like, "there could never be anything better than you" or something...

-Even though many hate this film- the end of The Mirror Has Two Faces where Jeff Bridges finally gets his head out of his ass and realizes he loves Barb - and he goes to her place in the very early morning...and they're dancing/kissing in the street..I love that....

Villavic 07-15-2004 11:52 AM

Under the Tuscan Sun

I just saw "Under the Tuscan Sun" with Diane Lane. Very romantic, specially the poland guy with the italian girl, they have many romantic scenes.

BTFLCHLD 07-15-2004 12:08 PM

Bigstreet W/ Henry Fonda Lucille Ball

Meg, Meh????! She's soooo cute, like a little kitten...Did you see French Kiss? Did you notice how Stevie thanked Meg Ryan in her notes on TISL? Sorry, it's just hard to imagine not liking MR....

Anyway, my movie is not a romantic movie but is my favorite movie and still has romantic moments....
All About Eve, when Gary Merril, as Bette Davis' boyfriend, resists the come ons of Eve, the young user, and even though Bette Davis has previously thrown horrible (and fabulous) jealous tirades, he gives a big speech about why he loves HER, diva behavior and all, and then they get married. :xoxo:

****, you're a real masochist. You should track down a copy of Dogville. ;) I only saw it once, it isn't something I could watch again, even if the beautiful Elisabeth Shue is in it. You know how there are just certain movies that have such an effect on you that you can't watch it twice? That was that kind of movie for me. It hit too close to home considering my family is full of drunks.

Meg Ryan is someone that you either love or hate, why is it so hard to imagine not liking her? Her cuteness is gross to me, and it's become embarassing to watch her go from trying to play cute way past the time when she should've stopped, and then gone to something wildly stupid like doing "In the Cut" to show her edge. It reeks of desperation and it's gross!

I liked it in moderation- I like IQ & You've Got Mail, French Kiss is okay- but it just gets to a point of sheer annoyance.

Seeing her full-frontal in "In the Cut" was gross. I don't think I've recovered yet. :o

I haven't seen that...why is it gross? And I agree that it's hard to see Meg, uh, not embracing what should, perhaps, be a change in the tone of her roles...but I think her physicality limits her in that, unfortunately. Cause even as she gets older and maybe not so cute, she still basically has "cute face"...anyway, i hope she can do it more gracefully...

The whole movie was just a smut-fest and made you want to take a shower after watching it. The nudity came off as more of an act of desperation to save her career than anything else and it backfired completely. Though the nudity can't be totally blamed (Mark Ruffalo ran around bare ass throughout the whole thing, too, and his career is on fire as of late), a lot of it had to do with her bad acting in it and the overall badness of the whole shebang. It was just bad. Read the book, don't see the movie. The movie is just porn with actual graphic closeups of oral sex.

Dogville should be right up your alley, I'm actually surprised you haven't seen it yet. A lot of the desperation amongst the characters in that movie reminded me of Leaving Las Vegas. I'm not sure if it's out on video in the States yet, I got my copy from South Korea.

The only reason to see it would be for Kevin Bacon, and he's only in it for ten minutes. Or, I guess, if you want to see Mark Ruffalo's ruffalo.
