Awesome Mp3s from Mansfield

Get over to http://www.angelfire.com/moon/sister2/downloads.html and get IKINW and Red Rover etc. These mp3sdon't have the over-bassy issues of the Green Bay ones. You can really hear the guitar and, especially, the different vocals on RR (INCLUDING AWESOME VOCALS AT THE END - you will die, Christy! Well, hopefully not really - lol!)! And IKINW.... the solo has morphed from when it was played in Green Bay! It goes on for ages and includes a distorted guitar rendition of the accordion line!
Bliss. :]

wondergirl9847 05-31-2004 10:36 PM

Dang you, Joe

I wasn't going to listen to the mp3's until I got back from my Texas shows, but dangit....LOL I have ZERO willpower.

Listening to IKINW now....AWESOME vocals!! "DON'T BLAME ME..." I freakin' love that part! Can't wait to sing it with him in Dallas and Houston!! Love that dude screaming "Lindsey!" at the end!!

Red Rover....*tears streaming down face* "I said RED ROVER!" I said take you OVER!" OMG.....God help me.

AAAAHHHH!!! ISA is only coming up as 3:15!!!! What happened to it?! It cuts off!!!!! HELP!!!!!! LOL

DownOnRodeo 05-31-2004 11:13 PM

lol Sorry Christy :)

Don't blame me..... please be strong (don't dload any more) I know it's not long! (till TX) :P

earthdreamer 06-01-2004 12:25 AM

The first part of the set is so slow.

dissention 06-01-2004 09:38 AM

This is why Red Rover was my favorite that night. :D

And Stevie sounds horrid. Get off the road and take a rest already.

I've seen the show live so it's hard to say it's not coming across differently in the boots if you haven't been there. The show has great pacing live and doesn't feel slow at all. IMO the show flows very well. I've listened to a few boots from this leg and it doesn't seem slow to me. Anyone else?

I very rarely have anything negative to say about LB's guitar playing, but the solo that was played in Madison and Green Bay was...to put it bluntly....poor (IMHO). The beginning was a 1:1 copy of the EOTW solo and the rest was littered with notes that were dischording with the rhythm and bass guitars. It sounded like bad improvisation, as though he was trying to force the EOTW solo to fit this totally different song, and I can't believe that nobody said anything to him after the first night (probably too scared!lol!). I'm glad that the majority of it's been changed for the better now (playing the accordion riff is a great idea and works brilliantly!), but it would still be nice if he thought of another way to open the solo.

Yes that made me wonder too. I think Dissention mentioned that he used the ISA solo during the Murrow performance at that Soundstage show he recorded. Then this cheap EOTW copy Seteca mentions. Is our man running out of ideas at the moment? I don`t think he is limited in that way that he only can play 2 default solos. But I don`t think he uses the additional space on the shows properly if he not only copies his own speeches and gestures but even his own solos...

CarneVaca 06-01-2004 11:35 AM

Hmmm... I haven't found the EOTW licks discordant with the IKINW chord structure. The songs are in related keys anyway.

Why is he using that lick though? Is he trying to tell us something about these songs? Is Eyes of the World part of the continuum of Not That Funny and I Know I'm Not Wrong?

Not that Funny: the taunt
I Know I'm Not Wrong: coming to grips
Eyes of the World: the aftermath

I probaly is the sound quality of these mp3's but I agree with whoever said Stevie needs a break, this is the worst I've heard from her, she really sounded like she was struggling, poor dear.

I was there and it isn't the sound quality! :wavey:

Maybe "dischord" was too strong a word. At times I wish my knowledge of formal musical terms was stronger, times like now! I had two particular things in mind. Firstly, those famous EOTW licks he plays to start the solo work fine with the EOTW chords & rhythm (obviously!), but the last note on each lick (the one that lasts the longest) seems to clash with the chord structure of IKINW. I wish I could use a better term but it "removes the major (i.e. happy) sound" of the underlying chord and just sounds "off", at least to my ears. A minor detail (pardon the pun) but I notice it everytime.

The other thing I was thinking about was how on this tour and the Dance (only), Lindsey has for some reason picked up the tendency to work his way across the same string playing every note that's on the scale over and over again, almost hoping that the next note he lands on is on the correct scale. Apart from the fact that this is, to put it mildly, slightly unadventurous, he also sometimes lands on the wrong note as he's moving higher and higher and he quickly corrects it by either bending or sliding to the right note. Again, it's not a big deal and it sounds like I'm nitpicking (and if you're not a lead guitarist I can see how you could easily miss this), but I've noticed this on Come, GYOW, ISA, and now IKINW, and I'd be lying if I said it doesn't bother me when he does it!

Haha...I think that's a VERY positive way of thinking about why he chose to use the same solo...;)

shackin'up 06-01-2004 05:52 PM

I don't mind he's doing that. I think he truly believes in the effect of those opening licks, and later on he bends the solo more towards the IKINW-melody.
He's never been the best (read: most creative) sologuitarist out there. But his licks have punch and fun and are typical. He plays like he is: a neurotic repeater. That's why the Come-solo is so friggin' brilliant. He moans and screams rythmicly until irritation AND beyond, until he breaks the border by going on and on and on so - like him -we totally lose it and in the end we all feel free and float in Buckingham Space. The man has everything I'm allergic of. That's why he cuts so deep.....

imo

goldie 06-01-2004 06:03 PM

These are MUCH better than Green Bay. All I had up to this point was the Green Bay mp3s and sad to say, I wasn't too impressed.

Stevie does sound like she is grasping for notes on Sara, though.

The vacuum of the Buckingham Space is sometimes known as "The Ledge" Vacuum. It appears on the wrong side of our solar system, so we are unable to see Red Rover's Belt. When the moon lines up with Tusk, the dog star, this is called, the Blue Letter Event.

Oh, I see what you mean. It didn't bother me. Now it will. Thanks!

As for his tendency to stick with one string, I know what you mean. Let's just be glad he is using one string as opposed to one note a la The Chain. Lindsey is not much of solo player and he has said so himself. I suspect he's slightly intimidated by them. He's great with crafting songs and adding tremendous hooks and licks, but the solos must be a real challenge for him. Even so, he's come up with beautiful solos, be it the screeching ones like Countdown and Tango in the Night or the soothing melodic ones like Steal Your Heart Away and Oh Diane.

This astonishes me! I find his solos awesome and among the best. The one-note approach totally works for the Chain; it's one of my favorites. In fact it's part of his genius that he can do so much with only a few notes. It's not how many notes you play, it's the overall effect, which he pulls off flawlessly.

As for him dissing himself, that happens far too often. For someone is worshipped by thousands of people, he sure has some self-esteem issues.

Oh, I agree. But based on what he has said, I conclude he struggles with them a bit. Besides, live solos are by nature somewhat improvisational, and that ain't Lindsey's thing.

He's not unlike George Harrison in the sense that George labored over his solos painstakingly before committing them to tape.

Please explain that again for me. Do you think he doesn`t like playing live because of the situation and improvisational skills which are demanded then? Like he doesn't like to talk spontaneously and has his whole live show behaviour rehearsed... Or do you think he is not a very good live player per se? I always thought he was pretty good but I am neither a guitar player nor a musician and thus cannot evaluate what is going on technically.
I once read an interview with Janet Robins, one of his guitarists from the OOTC tour and she said he was exceptionally good and could do things she couldn`t and Waddy Wachtel stated he was great also. So what about his guitar skills now? Is he repeating himself because he is running out of ideas or because of limited abilities or because of insecurity? Evaluations appreciated!

seteca 06-02-2004 07:53 PM

To be honest, I think the only way an artist can improvise speeches and performances flawlessly and unrepetitively is to be extremely arrogant and always overestimate his own ability and how much his fans love him (regardless of who or how good he is.)

Generally speaking, LB seems to have some serious insecurities when it comes to doing anything "live", be it speaking or performing, and I think it comes from the fact that he is deep down a very humble man, perhaps even more so than he himself realises. The sad thing is that although he is not a technically "outstanding classic lead" player, he is nevertheless a very good one, and as everyone mentioned above, his solos (regardless of technical level) are a true pleasure to hear - and yet he clearly has a confidence problem with true improvisation (as opposed to creating different sets of licks and stringing them together in premeditated orders from show to show.) The technical ability is certainly there, and anyone who watches the Mirage Tour Video will know that he can definitely do A LOT more than just hit a single note for The Chain's solo (!!!)...and what about ISA from the same show...??...talk about setting your fingers on fire!...ALL four fingers and thumb are playing the notes on that solo at incredible speed, almost like a pianist....incredible stuff! So the ability is there...so why doesn't he make more use of it? Who knows..! I'm sure the fact that his name has been missing from almost all of these "greatest guitarist" lists has not done his guitar-ego any good. Plus the fact that he was originally a bass player because he didn't know how to play lead and only learnt at a relatively old age probably makes him think he's not as good as these other famous guitarists who've been playing lead since they were kids. His thought process, IMHO, is probably something like "If I try to do something wildly different from night to night, I'll probably screw up one time and then everyone will think I'm crap [which couldn't be further from the truth!] so I'll just stick to the same secure routine and nobody will realise because 99.9% of the crowd changes from night to night: in each city the crowd is impressed." I wish he would just realise that there is simply NO WAY he could ever "screw up" (in any major way) because he is simply TOO GOOD! The drugs he was taking during the Tusk and Mirage tour made him overcome this confidence problem and unleashed the true brilliant lead guitarist within him: the result was some of the most incredible (and definitely improvised!!) performances of his life, both as a guitarist and a singer! Well he's not taking drugs anymore (I hope!) but I wish that the 100s of 1000s of amazed fans applauding and cheering at his guitar performances in the past 7 years would have had the same effect!

Yea like I said, being technically amazing does not in any way guarantee you to be a guitarist who people enjoy listening to: I would prefer to hear my 7 year old cousin softly play the single notes of Jingle Bells on his junior size guitar any day of the year than to hear some insane metal trash band produce a disgusting cacophony of a 1000 notes in a stupidly short amount of time*. I would, in my very humble opinion, "evaluate" Lindsey as a technically very good guitarist, with a truly outstanding ability to convey his emotions using the instrument. The 2nd half of that sentence is the reason why his music has on many occasions brought me to tears and why I think he is one of the greatest musicians and guitarists.

By the way, bear in mind that everything I said above is referring to LB's abilities as a "lead electric guitarist". His technical abilities as an acoustic player undoubtedly put him at the top among the very best of all time.

[* There are of course people who are technically incredible and also are a pleasure to watch/hear. E.g. I recently saw a Steve Vai gig where he played an entire solo by moving around on stage and getting feedback notes off different amps, and then manipulated each note with the whammy bar and various effects....!!!...it was as crazy as it sounds, and the strange thing is that it actually sounded fantastic!]

p.s. Dissention....glad you liked my definition of "Buckingham Space"...lol..!

While repeating oneself is human nature one should always be vary of not overdoing it. I agree in that Lindsey is insecure when speaking, very possibly even when performing (and that's why he seems to have a choreography of sorts). But when he does the same speeches night after night it gives an impression of insincerity and being indifferent of the audience to me even though he very likely is being honest and believes in what he says.

I don't know if he ever took drugs that much; for me it seemed to be a matter of youthful aggression and energy rather than being too insecure. But when he stopped touring for a long time the pressure on stage must have gotten bigger on him.
The band gave its best performances at the tail end of the tour, IMO. The touring strain was affecting all of them; these days they seem to have too much time in between the shows to do anything else but music.
Oh, and he still smokes pot. That's what I've read, anyway.

I don't think it's that paradoxical. I don't think we should confuse being confident with being arrogant: if Rolling Stone published a list of "Top 20 guitarists" and Guitarist X's name was mentioned, it can only boost (as opposed to lower!) his confidence level. This would be particularly helpful for a guitarist who had an unusual method/style of playing solos (like LB) as it would reassure him that his playing is just as enjoyable and good as that of the other famous names in the list, and could only encourage (again, as opposed to discourage) him to be more spontaneous when playing live. If Guitarist X is arrogant anyway, this boost in confidence will probably increase that arrogance, but if he is humble, I don't think it will create any arrogance.

I'm sure "youthful aggression" was a major factor, but I think he was on something a lot stronger than pot during the Mirage and Tusk tours. He was sweating more than he does now, and some of the performances are very much "out there":woohoo:...lol....e.g. the Mobile show on the Tusk tour.....and the Memphis show on the Mirage Tour.

p.s. I hadn't had the chance to listen to many of the recent bootlegs I'd downloaded so today I decided to listen to the Green Bay show. There's this part on the I'm So Afraid solo from 7:04 to 7:19 which is absolutely incredible and is a superlative case of "music speaking clearer than words." He plays this series of arpeggios, changing the chord shapes along with the chords of the song and the result is one of my favourite LB guitar moments ever. He definitely had not done this until this tour, and when I listened to some of the 1st/2nd leg SYW shows, he didn't do it there either. He does do it at the London show though, so he must have introduced it around the time of the European tour (and judging from the available bootlegs has done it at every show since!). However "spontaneous" LB becomes, I hope that this particular section becomes a permanent part of the solo...it's beautiful.

I think he had his share of almost everything a little bit, but pot's his major thing I think. During the Tusktour I got the impression he boozed more than I do on a normal day.
