Can I Handle The Seasons Of My Head

We're talking salt and pepper.

I'm just starting to get some grey hair on my temples. Everybody says they can't see it, but I can. My younger brother has been mostly grey since he was twenty. My mom started frosting, then dying her dark hair many years ago when her hair started turning. My father's dark hair didn't start turning until a few years ago, but my brother and I suspect that he was using grecian formula for years.

Do you have any grey?
Where? (Head descriptions ONLY, please. :sorry: )
How old were you when you got your first?

According to my friend when she was doing my hair, I have 3 grey strands underneath the top layer of my hair

IMO, i'm too young for grey but I suppose if it has to happen, it's best that it's underneath where you can't see.

There's nothing wrong with salt and pepper hair on a man. Lindsey looks hot with it ;)

Ever tempted to yank the three out?

sparky 05-28-2004 03:31 AM

Dude. So brutal. My dad was all grey by 30. I have about 30-40% grey at the temples. And I am still pushing 40 ! Regardless, I am thankful for every strand. Even though I have been entertaining the thought of a staggeringly expensive Los Angeles hair color job.

strandinthewind 05-28-2004 05:40 AM

LOL - I always had jet black hair that everyone accused me of coloring to get that color, which I never did.

So, awhile back, I was driving down this really busy street in Atlanta and looked in the rear view mirror to check my hair (hey I am vain and was in a convertible  ) and SHRIEKED when I saw a grey hair. I roared the car over to the side of the road, got over the hyperventilation, and then pulled it out. Fortunately, I got over it because I now have greying temples

Here is an example of me in 1996 with my very black and, as a pithy friend of mine then called and perhaps still calls it, my "important" hair  :woohoo:

DeeGeMe 05-28-2004 06:47 AM

I'm a redhead and I think I noticed my first grey hair when I was about 23. But that was more of a one-time incident. My hair really didn't start to turn grey until I was about 32-33 (I'm 39 now)--right near the temples. Around the same time, my hair began to "brown" out or lose it's original, vibrant color. That's when I began what I like to term "Color restoration". So I go and spend an outrageous sum of money every three months or so to get my hair to look it's "normal" color. The strange thing is that both my parents didn't began to go grey until they were in their late 40's or early 50's. My half-brother on the other hand is almost completely grey and has been since his early 40's (he's also a redhead). Oh well, we shouldn't complain--at least we've both still got a full head of hair! The really unfair thing to me is that you guys look distinguished or flat out sexy with grey hair. Women with grey hair just look old--which is why I spend the $$$$ to keep myself looking half-way decent. Now if I could just come up with the money to get the botox and the eyebrow lift and . . . aging sure ain't pretty and fighting it isn't cheap!

Why thank you, but I feel compelled to note that was awhile back and MANY, perhaps too many, General Tsao's chicken dinners ago!!!!!

Alison 05-28-2004 08:50 AM

Well, I'm 41, I guess I noticed my first grey hair about 36. But it's only a few. And it's on top so you can't see it. I'm blond so it makes it harder to see.
My mom who is 73, has very little grey hair. My dad started in his forties, but he has thick hair so it doesn't look that bad. My grandma who died a few months ago at the age of 98, had little grey hair also. So hopefully I will have my mom's side of the gene pool.

sara1998 05-28-2004 08:53 AM

I was 21 when I had Sara. I noticed my first grey hair at 22... go figure! After Jason died, I have lots of grey hair in my bangs and in the hair around the sides of my face. When I pull my hair back when it's not colored, it's salt and peppered... I'm only 26....

Carolina Girl 05-28-2004 09:02 AM

I started getting grey hairs in my early 30s. At first, I pulled them out, but then I stopped because I'm already paranoid about LOSING my hair. For a man, that's socially acceptable, despite what some men think...those who insist on doing a comb-over AS IF anyone is fooled by that! But for a woman to lose her hair, that's horrifying. So for now, while I thankfully have long hair, I have it highlighted. It helps hide the grey. I'm sure I'll be doing full color before too long. Two of my older sisters color their hair regularly to cover the grey, and they are 41 and 37. Another sis, 40, is letting hers go natural salt and pepperish and it suits her.

Men should NOT color their hair. Let it be natural. To me, the grey hair or salt and pepper look on a man is incredibly sexy. And please, no comb-overs.

Violet 05-28-2004 09:25 AM

I have NO idea if I have any grays! I've been coloring/highlighting my hair for so long I'm not even sure what my real color is! But my highlights are very light blond and would hide any grays, I'm sure. Plus my mom is blond also and didn't really turn gray, it just kind of went white, which is also what happend to her mother. My mom did go thru hair loss, though. Not fun. But I think her "conditions" have something to do with it; i.e., alcoholism, lifelong HEAVY smoker, osteoporosis, cancer, etc, etc. So I'm not really worried about hair loss...

Mari 05-28-2004 10:03 AM

29, darkblonde, a few grey hairs in the fringe that only I can detect. My mother is 57 years old, has black hair with almost no grey at all. I've my father's hair though, so I guess I'll be white haired and nearly bald when I reach that age ;)

Question: is it spelled grey or gray? Or is that British English vs American English spelling?

Either spelling is acceptable, as far as I know. Just a preference thing, I guess.

Out of curiosity, what was your grandmother's hair color at 98 if not grey?

When I lose my hair, I'm shaving my head again. It's easier. More grey is fine until then.

I just turned 35.

I am now probably about 60% gray. My extremely queenie hair stylist likes my grey hair calling it "silver and distinguished".

I started turning gray about five years ago. It was not noticeable for awhile, and then one day- WHAM!!!- I had mega-grey hair.

Oh, well....

I usta dye my hair all the time- not because I had gray hair, but because I wanted to dye it different colors and shades (platinum blond, wine red, black, etc....). I don't wanna dye my hair anymore because I hate that "gray-growing-in-through-dyed-hair-you're-a-hag" look.

I am being dramatic

Probably 90-100 bucks, and I would have to get it done every 4-5 weeks. Of course, the idea is goofy. I am NOT flattered when told I look distinguished. I am not old enough to be shooting for "distinguished". I am still at an age where I would far prefer, oh, hunky. F-able. Hottie. Something that implies a little more action...

I pay $125 every 10-12 weeks to keep mine looking "natural". But a lot of folks go the do-it-yourself route which is a lot cheaper. I'd probably end up with pink hair though if I tried to do it myself!
