***SPOILER***Nashville set list

this is unbelievable....looks like we are slowly migrating to the set list of yore - according to a review on Mick's board, they dropped "destiny rules" inserted "say you will" back in.

this is really pissing me off slowly. i can just see "sara" getting dumped soon.

ShangriLaTroubl 05-15-2004 09:33 AM

The totally wierd part is right now I have no idea what they will play tonight..there has been some kind of a set list change for this leg of the tour every night...so It's very weird for me to be able to say that I do not know what they will play...as long as they dont drop Sara!!

Chris

Mike B 05-15-2004 09:35 AM

Unbelievable is right...

You've got to be kidding me.

So now we're down to only IKINW, Sara, and Red Rover as the only changes from a setlist that has been played over 100 times? This is ridiculous.

I might just be done with this tour.

ShangriLaTroubl 05-15-2004 09:39 AM

For all we know possibly they are just trying to change it up every night...I know that is hard to believe, but it is possible...there has been no SET in stone set list since this leg began...Dont let me down again was dropped, then the next night goodbye baby reappeared, now destiny rules has been dropped and say you will back in....maybe next week destiny rules will be back and goodbye baby dropped...MAYBE (although i have my reservations as well)---they are trying to do it a little diff. every night..

Except for DLMDA , we know Cory said it was dropped for good because it couldnt find it's place or something

I'd really like to believe that. But it seems to me that they are still just so uncomfortable with taking chances that they're reverting back to the safe, predictible setlist. I guess we will know better after tonight.

i know...me too. i woke up this morning, went online and hadn't heard the new added songs from Madison. After i heard "DR", i thought, "i like this song...and i'm glad they're doing it in place of "SYW" cause it's more emotional and stevie-ish to me for some reason.

i was just scrambling around the past few days trying to get tix for 2 shows in the area. I found 2 great seats (6th row) for scranton on ebay and when i went to bid on them, ebay prompted me to enter credit card information and i usually wait till literally the last minute or two before bidding because you have a better chance of getting the item without someone out bidding you. anyway, i didn't get the tix and maybe this is a sign.

i think i may just go to one show providing they don't drop anything else.

i also just as soon see them go back into the studio. i really need to save my $$$ anyway.

if they feel that the song was dragging, why don't they put in "RTTG"?

rezamatic 05-15-2004 11:13 AM

By now they should change it for the diehard fans

Hey everybody! This is my very first post here (woo-hoo!) even though I've been coming to the site over a year now.

Anyways, I've been to see the Mac twice last year (FINALLY my first two times seeing them live) and I've found them to really be playing to the general, casual fans. I've noticed that Rhiannon, Gypsy and a few other classic tracks just seem fizzled out, in my opinion - it's as if they're forced to play them to please those nosebleed-seat-grabbing 'fans'. I totally understand this for the first and even second leg, but the point is that we're on the THIRD LEG now! Those casual fans have had their chances to go catch the band play their greatest hits at least twice now, so I feel like they've filled their quota. It's time to finally throw out new (and obscure old) songs that they've always wanted to experiment with live. If the casual fanbase isn't totally into it, then big deal. Swap with another group of songs the next night. By now I just feel that they should be tailoring more to the diehard fans that will appreciate the immense variety of work they've created over the years (and past year!). We've already forked over tons of cash for repeat concerts, and we're gonna keep going over and over again (who are we kidding?). Bring on the new set list because by now we deserve it!

77Rumours77 05-15-2004 11:17 AM

well i am fine right now, I am praying that INIW and Sara are not dropped! I wouldn't even go if I had the chance!

diamondsnake 05-15-2004 11:20 AM

Can someone answer a question? Is Second Hand News still in the setlist? Someplaces say it is in the set list and some do not. I really hope it is because it is my favorite song from Rumours.

Also!!!! Destiny Rules dropped!!! Ahhhhh!!!!   This sucks!!! The tour has been going on for what four or five concerts now and the setlist has been different at each one, so I am not holding my breath to hear any song when I see them next week. I don't want to be dissapointed. This royally sucks though. Lets hope it is just a rumour or they quickly change their minds and bring it back in the setlist tonight. I am mad!!!

wondergirl9847 05-15-2004 11:44 AM

Dangit!!!

That's one of my fave SYW songs!! GRRRR!!!:mad:

I don't LIKE the song, SYW!!!

Grrrrrrumble.

LOL If he drops Red Rover, I swear to those damn gods.....

Hawkeye 05-15-2004 01:04 PM

NO NO NO. I could live with the loss of DLMDA, but THIS is UNEXCEPTABLE. Short of loosing IKINW this is the worst possible thing that could happen. You people who went to Madison surely had the right idea.

estranged4life 05-15-2004 01:13 PM

Personally...

I thought "Destiny Rules" sounded rather flat on the Madison bootleg, So I can see it getting the boot..."Say You Will" seemed more rockin' on past bootlegs than "Destiny Rules" did on the live Madison boot.

However, IKINW & Sara seem very rockin' so hopefully those 2 tracks will be around for awhile (If ya catch my drift)

ryan8472 05-15-2004 01:16 PM

Damn it!!!!

I was really looking forward to Destiny Rules. This totally sucks ass. I say we find the one who decided to take it out of the set and lynch them! Why is it that this song is always played 3-4 times and then dropped?

Or maybe they don't really want to experiment with new live tunes, despite what they harp on in interviews.

Harry Cohn, the old studio boss at Columbia, once said that if his ass gets sore in the preview, the movie's a stinker & the audience won't like it. One of the screenwriters quipped, "That's great. The whole world is wired to Harry Cohn's ass."

Fleetwood Mac ought to stop fretting over whether a percentage of the asses out there is getting sore. The band members all think with the most prosaically commercial minds these days. It's no wonder that "Say You Will" ain't "Tusk" -- there's no way in hell that a "Tusk" would have been created in that kind of reactionary environment.

Is Second Hand News in the Setlist?

sparky 05-15-2004 02:19 PM

As much as I like DR on the record, I thought it sounded draggy on the boot too. BUT, that doesn't mean I didn't want to hear it live. It's better than that boring assed, draggariffic SYW. But then, Rhiannon is a boring drag of a song too, and they'll play that till they are hauled off stage. I already decided I am not spending a cent on this leg anyway. If I get comps, I am there. No money from me !

Ugh! What was the point in even doing the second batch of rehearsals?! Can't they just be stubborn enough to not change the setlist just because that means they would have wasted all of that rehearsal time?! I will be there rockin' and happy no matter what happens, but it would really make me sad to lose my chance to ever see Sara live. It's such a treat since we thought it would most definitely never happen again. I will drop dead if they are actually switching it up each night, but I say that with my fingers crossed behind my back because you never know! :)

rezamatic 05-15-2004 10:54 PM

What's their motivation, anyway?

Thanks! It took me a while to figure out which post I really wanted to respond to and have something decent to say!

One thing I noticed with my two concert-goings is that the audience is SO much different in nosebleeds versus floor. I was trying to chat up with some 'fans' when I couldn't afford decent seats. I said I couldn't wait to hear "Tusk" and she sort of blanked and said 'OH, right--wow that's an obscure one! You're pretty good!" That and I had some drunk redneck behind me screaming out "YEEEAH Not Ever Going There Again, Lucy!" during NGBA. Lucy.... Lucky Birmingham, I assume?

Compare that to the awesome time I had down on the floor a few months later, talking with fans about specific shows/sets at tours that I've never had the chance to go to! Just proved to me that the $70 fans will be happy enough with whatever, but the $100+ fans will get SUCH a kick out of new stuff.

So that brings me to a question - do you think that if F-Mac actually did change up their set list to appeal to their more dedicated fans, that overall ticket sales would drop? I mean, are they afraid of this and that's why they don't bother?

jadegypsy 05-15-2004 11:26 PM

The Good: I get to keep $100, no DR no going, that simple. I don't care all that much about the other new songs, I like Sara but it's not in my top five Stevie songs.

The Bad: I get to keep $100 b/c the set list almost identical to what I saw before, and yes I would've shelled out $100 to see DR live, only three other songs could've made me do that: Angel, MLD, and Sweet Girl. Oh well.

As for why the play the same old list probably b/c they are not footing the tour bill and the backers (VH1?) want to see $$$ not to please the diehard fan. If it isn't on Rumors or called Rhiannon or Gypsy the casual fan doesn't know it or want to hear it. But I can't really point fingers, after all I'm going to see Madonna and I want to hear her older stuff, obscure great, new NO!

I personally don't think it is as much a money issue as it is a performance anxiety issue.

Most casual fans come in expecting to hear the monster hits. But do casual fans do any research before going to see a band like FM? I think they see the brand name "Fleetwood Mac" and that's enough. Once they get inside the door, they are pretty much at the mercy of the band in regards to the setlist. I guess what I'm saying is that as long as the tour isn't advertised as an "Obscurities Tour", they'll probably put the same number of butts in the seats. They may have some very unhappy audience members, but hey, by then, the ticket is sold.

But that is part of the problem. This band definitely feeds off the energy of the audience and this fan response often dictates which songs to drop (RTTG and DLMDA anyone?). So obscure songs = less response = less energy = a terrified band. I would have thought that they would have more confidence in themselves and their music by now, but apparently they don't.

I think it is possible to achieve a balance between playing the mega hits and enough new/obscure songs to keep everyone happy, but FM seems to fall just short of it for me. They really don't have to play 8 + songs from Rumours on every tour.

Hell, I don't mind if I hear the ridiculous amount of Rumours songs just as long as the other aspects of the setlist would change. There's PLENTY of new songs they should try in place of the SYW ones they've had in the setlist. No matter how polished and smooth the performances are, you're bound to get bored if you listen to numerous recordings or go to plenty of shows (if you're not in the front row, that is).

At this point they definitely should keep on changing the setlist, especially since the tour versions of the songs are pretty much inseparable from each other. Lose the backing players and let the touring strain affect LB/SN/JM/MF and then it would be the closest to Tusk tour that we could get right now.

While I would be the first one to welcome new songs in the set, I really understand why the band is doing it. Let's face it, hardcore fans are a true minority and for the casual ones (whose "fandom" rarely goes beyond Rumours and Greatest Hits) which make for the majority, it isn't especially fun going to a concert when you don't know even half of the setlist.

You mention "recordings". Should the band take into account that fans trade or download bootlegs of their shows and are sick to death of hearing the same setlist in rotation? I'll bet they never considered this aspect. Our general boredom of Rumours songs is completely and totally self-induced and I find it quite telling when some newer fans complain about "old and tired" setlists when they have never even been to a single FM concert. I think the band genuinely believes that even hardcore fans WANT to hear "Dreams" or "Go Your Own Way" given the years between each tour.

Yes it would be wonderful if they were more adventurous but if they played "Crystal", "I Know I'm Not Wrong", "Storms" and "Murrow" in succession, they would have an angry crowd screaming for the hits. So alas, they aim to please the majority which is quite understandable.

I have very little against them trying to "please the majority" but playing the same SYW songs night after night sure isn't pleasing them.

I'm not a musician but for me, for someone who believes that rock'n'roll isn't all about repeating what has gone before, doing the same setlist every night with the SAME SPEECHES (I understand their pretentious artistic aim but it still bugs me) and the same stage choreography in most songs is ridiculously unambitious. I understand that that's what most nostalgia acts do these days anyway.

As of now they do eight songs from Rumours (if you count "Silver Springs") and that's audience-pleasing enough as it is. If the band isn't changing the setlist in any other parts and keeps on using backing musicians then to me that says that the band isn't all that interested in playing live anymore and that there's other reasons (you guessed 'em) behind the whole touring. And it isn't all that surprising anyway, when you consider that Lindsey has mostly preferred studio work to live playing. Stevie SHOULD be up there, as a performer she still delivers but even she could benefit from possible changes in the set.

On this tour there's no immediate thrill, danger or risks involved. There was in the past, even though the set didn't change that much, because the safety net (the backing musicians) wasn't there. My belief is that the huge amount of such extra hands on stage has been seriously damaging the band interplay. In the older days the band chemistry was always obvious, especially on Rumours and the group songs of Tusk. If there's going to be a next studio album for this line-up it will most likely be the equal of SYW in interplay which isn't all that much.

good point...i find it very hard to believe that a 37 year old band, (ok, 29 year old, since basically everything up till 1975 has been null and void for some time now) has to rely on one album to deliver the goods. They (Lindsey mostly) complained in the past about being part of the "machinery" but they're the ones now that are totally running those "machines". And it's complete with assembly line workers and time clocks. By the way, is Stevie still sporting that Rolex???

I just think that if the audience is expecting to hear most of the Rumours songs then it's FM's fault. They're completely feeding those expectations. They could build a reputation of being spontaneous with their shows and play more variety from their catalog. Bruce or The Grateful Dead changed their sets all the time. And Bruce has had signature songs....but he still sells out with every tour. You can't tell me that FM couldn't get away with that. And the next time FM comes around, people are going to expect to hear the same Rumours songs and will most likely hear them.

Most likely, the band members are the same types of people that, if concertgoers themselves, expect to hear hit songs from their idols. I've actually heard Stevie admit this herself (not in those exact words). Therefore, it completely makes sense to them.

What do you think the chances are that FM does an "A&E Live by Request"?
They would s*** if they had to do that. They'd probably hand out a list of songs and tell the audience they had to pick from that, or they screen every caller too.

darklinensuit 05-16-2004 11:44 AM

I prefer SYW to DR, but I agree that more changes need to be put into the tired setlist.
If they had sense they'd throw in some songs for the diehards on different nights. Frozen Love, Storms, Tango, SOTM - If each of these were inserted into different shows, more people would be going to multiple shows, I suspect. Just one change every five shows or so - That's not too much to ask.

They would ****. Unlike the brave artists who agree to do that show, the Mac like to phone in their songs and play the same old **** that they've been playing for over 25 years. They do the same thing every night, so that eventually it all sounds the same and they're just going through the motions. They need to either reward the people who go to see them with fresh songs and a much fresher show, or pack it in and just stay in the studio until they decide to retire. Seeing Stevie sing Dreams for the 67,986,019 time, complete with mechanical hand gestures, isn't something I want to pay hundreds for. Same goes for Lindsey and the rest of 'em.

They should take into account that a great majority of the people who go to their shows attend them over and over and over. It's the die-hards that put the cash in their pocketbooks and it must be just a tad boring and predictable for such a customer to go to 15 shows, only to hear the same tired songs. Honestly, I wouldn't want to pay for more than one show if each one is going to be the same. I mean, everything in a Mac show is rehearsed, down to the number of footsteps that walk. Thank the lord that this is the last leg.

darklinensuit 05-16-2004 11:58 AM

That's why I still haven't bought a ticket. I've seen the same exact show five times already.

Oh yeah those other artists are real BRAVE  I saw Blondie on that show and what songs did they clearly scrrened the calls just like you're all saying the mac would. What songs were played on this all request show: Dreamin, Hangin on the Telophone, Gonna Get You, Call Me, Rapture, Heart of Glass, and a few songs from the new album. And I think there were 2 rarer songs. But Fleetwood Mac is doing a few VERY RARE songs on this tour. IKINW has NEVER ever been played live before. And i'd say it's pretty obscure. And guys have we already take for granted Beautiful Child. Seriously none of us could've ever DREAMED that thjis gem would EVER be played on Stage, but hey whipped it out for the SYW tour for us. And they even decided to keep it in for the 2nd leg. They took out A HIT of Stevie's and left in the OBSCURE song. They could've easiliy left in Gypsy and replaced Beautiful Child. But no they chucked Gypsy and kept BC. Doing it the other way around would've made the average fan happier. That was adecision for us.

Miranda 05-16-2004 01:29 PM

Most of the criticism isn't mutually exclusive. The set list is more than 20 songs nightly. They could change something every other show if not every night. They can still cover the Rumours standards and other radio hits, and please people tired of the same phoned in songs and performances.

Let's face it. This band really isn't interested in delivering freshness or taking chances. They either don't have the confidence, as some have said, or they don't give a ****. They just want the money.

When I hear or read Lindsey's comments against repeating oneself, which he still makes in almost every interview, I have to laugh. After seeing the magazine spread of his new house I put on the DR documentary for a good laugh. I especially get a kick out of the parts where he whines about loosing money for his artistic freedom.

I don't know how any band could tour for two years doing the same songs and the same scripted staging they did during the 7 year old reunion tour, and expect anyone to take them seriously. They're doing exactly what all oldies acts do, no matter how much they say they're not about that. As long as people will pay to see it they don't have to change a thing.

I'm not knocking fans who go to several shows and don't care about seeing the same exact thing each time. They just love the band and want to see them no matter what. I just get tired of band members saying they don't consider themselves an oldies act when they perform like one.

But you see- Fleetwood Mac CREATED this problem all on their own. The Buckingham Nicks lineup started with "greatest hits" from the white album on and they chose to continue playing the same songs over and over and over.

If they established themselves as a groundbreaking touring act from the beginning, they would never have gotten to the performance anxiety area in the first place.

Look at acts like The Indigo Girls, Phish, and The Grateful Dead (just to name a select few). They have "mixed it up" since the day they started playing. The IG have been touring solid now for almost twenty years. If you go to one of their concerts today, almost every ticket holder knows they're going to get a fresh set list. If FM had been dynamic from the Buck/Nicks get-go, all of the obscurites wouldn't even be obscurities at all.

So far, every Live By Request I've seen has done exactly that- or at least appears to do that. There's no way in hell any band is going to go onstage and allow unscreened callers to request ANY song from their catalog. No way. Stevie can't even remember the lyrics to "Frozen Love". When David Bowie went on one of his recent tours, he had to have a music geek teach him how to play some of his older tunes.

It's not too much to ask. But FM is wayyyy too lazy to want to do this. It's much easier for them to play the same old songs. No risk. No fear. No excitement.

BINGO!!! I couldn't have said better myself. It's sad, though. Such a waste. You would think with all the cash they have that they'd actually DO an "obscurities tour". Play to smaller venues. Charge enough money on each ticket to cover all their expenses, with a small profit. Set up a vote website to decide each week's (or each night's :blob2: ) setlist. Go out there and have a killer time playing fresh, exciting music.

Again... it'll NEVER happen. :(

One show out of countless shows does not a good argument make. And if you were a Blondie fan, you would've been surprised to have heard them play Undone and Accidents Never Happen. Did you see any other Live By Request shows? My guess is no because all the other artists I've seen have pulled songs out of their elbows for the viewers.

As for the rest of your post, I'm not going to wet myself because the Mac decided to play one rare song out of a setlist full of other tired hits. If they had done five or ten of said rare songs, my yap would be shut. But it was one. IKINW is nothing to scream about because they HAD to change the setlist is a very minor way because they knew they couldn't do good business with the same setlist.

That's because unlike the Mac, Bowie mixes up his setlists almost every night and has refused to play a lot of his classics on a great number of his tours. I admire him greatly for that. And Tom Petty? His concerts are legendary. It's like going to see a three hour jam. His band just plays whatever they feel like playing, even classics from other artists. He has the most off-the-cuff stage presence of anyone I've ever seen and it's fantastic.

I couldn't have said it any better myself. Bravo.

Oh that's just what I'd want to hear. Go to a Fleetwood Mac concert and hear some songs by The Eagles.

You know what, Stella Buckingham might be to blame for the lack of new songs in the set. homegirl Cory said it herself, the band only rehearsed for 2 weeks instead of 3. Who knows maybe in that extra week they would've rehearsed Sisters of the Moon or Storms or Illume or Everybody Finds Out.

Call me nostalgic...call it what you want...but I for one happen to really enjoy their set list...and I love hearing those old "tired" hits..night after night, it never gets old to me.
