Thoughts on a Grey Day
Ok not many Grey days here in Los Angeles so I'll start now cos we have one (and it will burn off soon).
- Bare Trees has an awesome photo of the sunset! What's your thoughts.....C'mon bring this forum alive! |
The Bare Trees cover is in my top 3 favorite Fleetwood Mac album covers. (behind Time & Kiln House)
|
Album Covers
1. Mystery To Me 2. Mirage 3. Kiln House 4. Bare Tress |
Bare Trees IS my favorite album cover by far. Nothing touches it.
|
My favourite is "Then Play On". That rider going from autumn in the laft part of the picture, to spring and summer in the right part.
It is so symbolic, like a change in some way. And the band a big change a within a year with Peter leaving. |
Covers...
Fave pre-Rumours covers:
Kiln House I could stare at this for hours!! You can always find some new thing you didn't notice before. Christine did a GREAT job on this album cover. Bare Trees Melancholy cover for a melancholy album. Perfect. Bravo John!! :) Then Play On It's very eye catching with the drawing and colors used. |
Although Bare Trees has a beautiful picture cover, my favorite of them all has to be Kiln House... :)
Song of the moment - You Are |
Kiln House is my favorite album cover, too. I also like the Mystery To Me cover, although I don't really know what it means.

I don't see how one person let alone many ahve mentioned Then Play On as a favorite. That cover is probably the worst in fleetwood Mac history. It's outright disturbing. It's GREAT album just a HORRIBLE cover.
|
They never
Quite got it right. Mick loved to be in drag....that was a constant (not that
there"s anything wrong with that!). Kiln House was one of my fave LPs but Christine's art work was just ok but original...I'll leave it at that. There are so many interpretations of FWM ....I have had a haiku........their record companies sucked at promotion and art direction.. Music is a constant! Talent prevails. Tom |
I thought the artwork on kiln house was just like her music.
Simply original and extraordianary! |

macfan 57, I also love the MTM cover and remember reading Bob's response to a question about it from the 1999 Q&A session, section 5. I've gone back to find it. The cover of MTM was done by an artist who I think was a friend of Mick's sisters husband. I think we all sort of threw ideas at the artist, and that's what he came up with and we liked it. The meaning I think was sort of supposed to be, "no matter how much knowledge you get, everything is still a mystery, and you're still a monkey!";-)---Bob Welch |

Hawkeye and P90pup, are you thinking of Then Play On or English Rose? English Rose is the one where Mick is dressed as a lady and what you might be thinking of? I think English Rose is a compilation cd and wasn't a new collection of songs. It was originally only released in the U.S.A. in 1969. I could be wrong on that? Then Play On also 1969, is as dansven described it. I like cover and the concept which didn't occur to me until dansven mentioned it. I also like: "dog & dust bin", It's simple but to me really conveys the Blues. Kiln House Chris's entry and her beautiful drawing, interesting colors. Future Games, The children, our future. Chris's intentions with "Show Me A Smile" remind me of the artwork. Bare Trees, John's Beautiful photo hits the mark! Penguin, John's symbol surrounded by nice artwork. Mystery to Me, very colorful, I think of the image when I hear "Forever", sort of a Caribbean rhythym. edit 06/02/04, I'm correcting myself here. English Rose is sort of a compilation but I've noticed that Kirwan's "Some Sunny Day", "Without You" & "Something Inside of Me" were not released previously. This is new material here! It also put some of the singles into album format, "Jizsaw Puzzle Blues", "Albatross" & "Black Magic Woman". Sound Ok? |
Yep, the Bare Trees pic is beautiful...

Just perusing some old threads...
I do love the Bare Trees cover. I'd list it number 4 of all pre-75 covers; 1) Kiln House 2) Then Play On 3) Mystery To Me 4) Bare Trees 5) PG's Fleetwood Mac 6) Penguin 7) Pious Bird of Good Omen 8) Future Games =9) English Rose =9) Mr Wonderful =9) Heroes Are Hard to Find Mick really doesn't mind putting himself out there in less than flattering pictures. Those last three covers are seriously disturbing. I wonder whether more people were put off buying those albums due to the strange covers or whether more people bought them out of curiosity. Was it common place for bands to release such strange covered albums back in those days? |

Check out the old King Crimson album covers (especially their first album In The Court Of The Crimson King from 1969) . Jethro Tull's first few album covers were a bit odd. There were a few bands who used Hieronymous Bosch paintings/drawings on their covers. (Pearls Before Swine, Deep Purple). One of his paintings, "Garden Of Earthly Delights" spawned a couple of album covers...the band using different sections of the very large tryptich. Plus, some other album covers done by other artists were very much influenced by Bosch (Alan Aldridge's cover for Elton John's Captain Fantastic... album & whoever did the cover for Frank Zappa's Overnight Sensation album. ) |

King Crimson- In The Wake of Poseidon Looks equally or more freaky. Would you recommend In The Court of... as an album to listen to? Frank Zappa- now that you mention FZ I've just remembered I own Trout Mask Replica from that period- that's pretty out there (in all ways). |

I'd like to hear Chili's Zappa recommendations (end of thread hijack). :) John |
I love EVERYTHING about "Bare Trees". It's actually my all time favorite Fleetwood Mac album! It's beautiful! Just beautiful! So beautiful!
|
I remember a review of Pious Bird's cover being described as a nun holding a dead albatross in a quarry.

Probably starting with stuff released around 1969: Crusin' With Ruben & The Jets Uncle Meat Hot Rats Burnt Weeny Sandwich Weasels Ripped My Flesh Chunga's Revenge Just Another Band From LA Waka/Jawaka The Grand Wazoo Overnite Sensation Apostrophe Roxy & Elsewhere While I thought the Mothers' Live At The Fillmore 1971 was ok, I wasn't that enthralled with it, but when I later discovered that one side of the live material that John & Yoko released on their Sometime In New York City album was the encore from the show that was released by Zappa, it gave it a whole new perspective. Sometimes, Zappa's gross-out humor gets a bit much, the instrumental portions of his albums are what I listen to the most; although I do like a few of his lyrics, too. |

After his injury (when he was thrown off a stage by an irate fan in London in 1971; leaving Frank wheelchair bound for quite some time), a majority of those subsequent albums between '72-'73 are largely instrumental albums (made up of work that had already been recorded & left off earlier albums). There's really not much of Frank Zappa's work that IS "family friendly" (he was pretty much public enemy #1 of Tipper Gore's wanting to have rating system for album lyrical content) Ok, now back to Fleetwood Mac. |
Bare Trees has a beautiful cover. Even when you can say "but looks really pale", it's original...blue...grey...you know.
I also like the covers of Penguin and Mystery to Me. That furious penguin in the front is so cute, and the rare monkey at the beach with the cake maybe looks rare, and weird, but the colors make the difference. The back is nice too! And for me, except for the first first first cover of a FM album, I don't think the rest are great. Well, maybe Then Play On looks good too! Regards! |

Consider the tight, restrictive standards still in place in the mid-sixties. The Mamas and Papas released their debut album in 1966. The cover featured all four members (clothed) in a bathtub. To the right of them you see a toilet. Only a few of those made it to the market before the censors deemed it inappropriate, so all future pressings have the "offensive" toilet covered with a listing of some of the songs. (I was able to obtain the toilet cover album, which is quite a rarity). I wish I could reference my album collection (about 500+) to list some bizarre, as well as creative and beautiful album covers. Alas, they are all in storage on the other side of the country. |
