Wilson Phillips' cover of GYOW
|
Oh My!!!!!! - it is a bit drab
Yet, LB's brilliance is there somewhere. It would be hard to hide, although this certainly makes a good effort  |
Worse than I feared. GYOW as badly done adult contemporary. I wish I could've seen the look on Lindsey's face when he got his copy of this gem.
|
I don't know. it was odd listening to that. The original GYOW is such a brutal combination of hurt and anger....but this new one sort of just makes you only feel the *hurt* and not the anger. Hard to explain. It was weird to hear Lindsey's angry words being sung in such a pansy-ish way LOL.

It starts off difficult to listen to cause of how used I am to the harder versions (FM studio/live and Cranberries), but it picks up in the chorus.
Thanks for the link! I was looking forward to hearing this. |
Alrighty
Listening to it right now...thanks for the link, Les. :)
Dang, it's so slow!! LOL I was expecting it to be fast. It would have been a pretty song, if it hadn't been GYOW. Does that make sense? I like the music, but those lyrics needs to be SCREAMED. |

I am starting to get dangerously addicted to this song. Dangerous because... like Christy says.. this is a good song, and so is GYOW, but theyre both so different.. one has to give!
Still.. I'm gonna try and appreciate each in its own right as much as I can! This version is really beautiful... and so are Wilson Phillips! Or is that another really airbrushed album cover and they're actually 65 or something - LOL |

One of my co-workers had a gastric bypass about four or five months ago, and was CRUSHED when she saw Carnie and realized she wasn't a perfect size 6. She's probably a 10 or a 12, maybe, and the stupid girl was so upset. |
Can anyone send it to me? I can't get it to work!
I've always liked Wilson Phillips so I look forward to this album Pip |

I'm sure it's not Lindsey's style at all. But on the bright side, if this becomes as popular as the Chicks' version of Landslide, that means some extra dough for our man Lindsey. Good for him. Finally, I will add this: To me, this sounds fresher and more interesting than that by-the-book interpretation by the Cranberries. |
I agree with CV and as Lis said, my first impression was the feeling of sadness and hurt. I think there will be a bunch of people who have never heard the original, (well, maybe a small bunch :D) who might just love this angsty version. Lindsey's music is timeless. Wilson Phillips have a nice mellow sound.

Ugh.
The vocals are pretty, but the arrangement is pathetic. They would've been better off doing Dreams. |
I like it. Makes me feel like I'm in an elevator or a supermarket.
|
Hell hath frozen over because...
Chili and I agree!!? I felt like I was listening to Muzak or something. I will say those 3 chicks can sing, but they didn't do that song justice. However, at least they did their "own" thing with it.

Wilson Phillips...GYOW!
 Hi Lis! Yes, it was certainly very unusuall! :p
Miss the hurt and anger! ;) But as some say, if one had not heard Lindsey's version one would appreciate this more!!! Lindsey Rocks!!! Sky:) |
I have to admit, it's actually not bad at all.
Perhaps it's because I was expecting something awful... or maybe I'm just happy to finally have the taste of Cranberries out of my mouth. ;) Nothing can ever top FM/Lindsey's version, of course, but I like the fact that they re-interpreted it. I've always felt that if you're going to cover a song, you should make it your own, and do something fresh with it... otherwise, don't bother. So, for what it is, it's pretty good! :) |

(EDIT: Um, apparently posting just 'Amen' is too short! lol <-- Well here's some more words!) |

But since they at least tried, they get bonus points. :) |

For this one- yes they changed it so the approach is O.K. The result- well it doesn't bother or annoy me but that`s all I could say. |
Well...
I heard this on the radio today...on KVIL in Dallas, which is a light rock station. They play Rhiannon and Dreams sometimes. I do hope it's a hit. :)

Ummmm....Well, they made it different. ;)
The vocals are pretty, but they should have done YMLF or something. |
GYOW Cover!
AMEN!!! Wonder what Brian thinks!!! ;)
:wavey: Next time try YMLF or BTLHim!!!Sky:) |
The chorus is realy quite 'nice' but the verses are so wrong, so so wrong!!
Its nice enough but doesnt quite work, this is based on one listen opinion might change |
The CD single is released on May 18th so that may have some better versions on it???

Chynna is on the right, Carnie is in the middle (blond now as well as slim) and Wendy is on the left

well, the fact that it's different doesn't make it good. Drizzle. It doesn't give any new feel. It takes away the original feel and replaces nothing. Yes, ChiliD. Perfect for the elevator in fancy but faceless hotels.
barf. |
It's soft and uninspiring. But I still like it better than the Cranberries' version. The Cranberries essentially tried to carbon-copy the music and layered a very bland vocal on top.
To me that is a bigger crime than trying to do something different and not quite making the target. |
did not expect to at all, but ... I like it.
I'd almost say sorry :D |

Billboard's review of the single
Billboard
May 15, 2004 Wilson Phillips - Go Your Own Way by Keith Caulfield WILSON PHILLIPS Go Your Own Way (3:40) PRODUCERS: Peter Asher, David Rolfe WRITER: L. Buckingham PUBLISHER: Now Sounds Music, ASCAP Columbia 58462 (CD promo) Covering classic songs is a tricky endeavor. Listeners always compare the new version to the original, making more universally known songs the most difficult to cover. This is the case with Fleetwood Mac's seething rocker "Go Your Own Way." Many people know that Lindsey Buckingham wrote the song about his frustration with bandmate and ex-girlfriend Stevie Nicks. But Wilson Phillips, with its first single as a trio in 12 years, takes a light and airy, passive route. Now a ballad, the song floats by without any lingering impression. The harmonies are certainly lovely--just as they always were. But where is the gut-wrenching emotion of the original? "Go Your Own Way" is the lead single from Wilson Phillips' covers album, "California" (due May 25), which, fortunately, includes tastier remakes than this one. |
Playing on the radio
I have heard their cover twice on KVIL (Dallas light rock station).
