SPIN-OFF: Memorable Non-Mac Video Images

What music video moments are instantly recognizable the moment you see them and/or come to mind when you think of an artist (OTHER than FM/Stevie?)
(Yeah, I KNOW it's evident I haven't had the channels since the 80s. You guys can put more recent additions.)

- Olivia NJ in the "Physical" headband

- The peasants doing the crazy "Safety Dance"

- Nena letting go of the 99th red balloon

- Pat Benatar shaking her stuff with the purple-haired-prostitute in the LIAB video

- Peter Gabriel's head being Sledghammered

- Sting surrounded by candles

- Britney as the schoolgirl :(

- Cyndi Lauper dancing down the sidewalk with the girls just having fun

- Tom Petty and Alice in DCAHNM

- Paul M. and Michael J. on the back of the wagon in "Say Say Say"

- Michael between the gangs in "Beat It"

- Madonna writhing on the floor in "Lucky Star"

- Billy Joel singing to "Uptown Girl" Christie B.

- Paulina P. floating around in "You Might Think"

- David Lee Roth's flip in "Jump"

- The Pointer Sisters in matching outfits in "Neutron Dance" or ANY of their videos

- Patti La Belle's sprayed-up fanned hair in "New Attitude"

- Tina in blue denim jacket in "WLGTDWI"

- Bruce Springsteen pulling Courtney Cox onstage in "Dancing In The Dark"

- Billy Idol being electrocuted in "Dancing With Myself"

- Annie Lennox in eyeliner, bright red hair, and man's suit, standing in front of a screen in "Sweet Dreams"

- Karen Carpenter singing on and near giant letters in "Close To You" (later used for a video after her death)

- Whitney lip-synching but still doing the Gospel chin thing  in "Greatest Love Of All"

- Elton John with the body painted folks in "I'm Still Standing" (In the days before AI's Diana :( )

GardenStateGirlie 04-27-2004 02:31 AM

I think you pretty much covered a lot...

-The Lady Marmalade remake with huge-haired Christina Aguilera primping herself in the mirror with horrendous red eyeshadow

-Shania Twain walking across the desert in That Don't Impress Me Much

-Kajagoogoo--2 Shy...the bartender/waitress watching the lead singer

-Sheryl Crow and her Elvis-esque lip in All I Wanna Do

-Ginger Spice goosing her bandmates in If You Wannabe My Lover

-the fat girl in the pink t-shirt trying to dance like J.Lo in If You Had My Love

-Chris Issak on the beach in I Don't Want To Fall In Love

laurie816 04-27-2004 06:10 AM

Well, I'd say the whole "Thriller" video from Michael Jackson was an image to behold since nothing like that has ever been done before...from his transformation to werewolf to dancing zombies...and his classic line "I'm not like other guys"

Also, the dancing bumble bee girl in Blind Melon's "No Rain"...she was a celebrity for a few minutes...she even closed the MTV Awards one year

Bon Jovi "flying" through the air in "Livin' On A Prayer"

David Bowie's "Fashion"...everyone smearing lipstick every few minutes

George Michael's "I Want Your Sex" writing 'choose monogomy' on a woman's thigh with lipstick

Axel Rose's 'Davy Jones' dance in "Sweet Child O' Mine"

Oh....and my all time favorite is Mick Jagger subtlely 'picking his nose' on the stoop in the "Waiting On A Friend" video

If I think about it, I may be able to come up with a list for later.

sodascouts 04-27-2004 11:22 AM

I'm sure there's tons more, but right now the one that comes to my mind is Anthony Kiedis running in slow motion towards the camera in Under the Bridge. Yummy. lol

See, that video is so memorable, I don't even need to mention it by it's actual name at 3:30 in the morning after working 11 hours and you STILL know what I'm talking about

DrummerDeanna 04-27-2004 12:27 PM

Definetly the Blind Melon bee girl...

Lots of Paul's in Macca's It's Coming Up video

The girl going into the comic in Take On Me - A-Ha

The weird facial distortions in Black Hole Sun-Soundgarden

Um...that's it for now :D

Merf 04-27-2004 01:01 PM

Mine would have to be Thompson Twins "Hold Me Now," "Doctor Doctor," "Lay Your Hands on Me," "Lies," "Sister of Mercy," etc.

I had one of their video albums when I was younger and wore out the VHS tape I watched it so much. They were my first love at the age of 2.

Villavic 04-27-2004 02:00 PM

Police at EBYT - the ashtray scene
Springsteen dancing with Courteney Cox in "Dancing In The Dark"
Robbie Williams with no skin at DJ Rock
MJ's Thriller, the whole video
David Bowie and friend naked at the beach in "China Girl"
The Queen faces at Bohemian Rhapsody
Though not a video, the Marie Antoinette choreography of Madonna's Vogue at MTV awards.
Though not a video, the moonwalk dance of MJ at Motown 25 made history too.
Pink Floyd's Another brick in the wall, the teacher turning into a hammer.
Rod Stewart's Tonight I'm Yours. The pool party where the keyboard's guy played a woman's leg instead of the piano.

There is a lot !!!

Violet 04-27-2004 02:02 PM

I would have to say Madonna's "Material Girl," with the pink dress.....

Also, Michael Jackson's "Beat It", the guy who does the weird shaky thing, and the one dancer who screws up and goes the wrong way, not to mention I think it's Jermaine is in that one...or is it Tito? I think Jermaine, but I'm not 100 percent....

One more, "Billie Jean." There was a guy I went to H.S. with who danced just like him in that video....

Carol

wondergirl9847 04-27-2004 02:41 PM

Dude!!

You are flooding my mind with memories!! I love it!!

Thriller..the entire thing, but most memorably, when he becomes a zombie and they all do that dance.

A-Ha...Take on Me...one of the best videos EVER....when he turns into his real self from the comic at the end and is banging on the walls, falls down, gets up and then smiles at her. :D

Madonna...Power of Goodbye...Goran Visnjic. When I saw that man, I went, "Who is THAT?! He is gorgeous!!" Later on, he was on ER! When he looks up to the camera after her chess move. Hehe. ;)

Van Halen...Jump...when DLR does the splits in the air.

Blondie...rapping in Rapture with Fab Five Freddy in the suit and hat.

Madonna....Like a Prayer, when her hands bleed, the burning crosses and the controversy around it.

Tom Petty dancing with dead Mary Jane (aka Kim Basinger) in Last Dance with Mary Jane (Is that the correct title?)

Nirvana and the psychotic teens in the gym, cheerleaders with that satanic symbol on their uniforms. Also, Wierd Al's parody of the video with marbles in his mouth! LOL

That's it for now....Great thread!

Johnny Stew 04-27-2004 03:11 PM

A lot of the scenes that came to mind for me, have already been mentioned, so I'll add:

Bonnie Tyler running thru the hallways of a boy's school, in "Total Eclipse Of The Heart," with flashes of the young men fencing, swimming, playing football, etc., haunting her as she moves thru the building.

I prefer the Nikki French version, or whatever her name was.

(I'm kidding, of course.) :D

The Thriller Video
Sometimes Love Just ain't enough (P. Smith and Don Henley) video.
I'm your baby tonight video (Whitney?)

jadegypsy 04-29-2004 11:29 AM

Violet- yeah, back when VH1 played music videos. Although I must say it still shocks some of my friends that my parents let their kid be "raised" by MTV/VH1:) So what do ya think of Madonnas newer stuff?

GardenStateGirlie 04-29-2004 04:07 PM

Don Henley - Boys of Summer...the kid playing the drums..Henley driving around the city in the convertable

Berlin- Take My Breath Away (you know, the song Jessica Simpson killed) Terri Nunn in her torn up dress in the wreckage of the plane

George Michael - Freedom...i'm pretty sure that's the video where the blow up the jukebox

and how could ANY of us forget what are probably the most recognizable videos of all time....anything by Robert Palmer and the 10 look-alike models behind him

To be honest, I can't even remember the last Madonna CD I bought. Oh wait. Yes, I can. Ray of Light. I really haven't been following her stuff as closely as I used to. Wait. I did buy Music, but didn't enjoy it quite as much. (I'm sorry, I have the flu, and my mind is a little mushy right now
:( .) And I haven't seen any movies she's done since Evita. Not even sure how many more she's done. But I did love Evita. Even bought it on VHS! I think somewhere I have her Sex book, but that's only because my hubby got a free copy through work.

Okay, now I'm rambling....think I'll just go to bed...

Jake- the tom petty thing was only a mystery to me, I had had that clip stuck in my head forever and could never remember which song it went to, all I remembered was loving the video, made a big impression on a kid I guess

Violet-That book was one peice that I never added to my Madonna collection, i do have all her albums though and the Truth or Dare (it's a concert documentary guys) video, plus I got tixs to see her on this tour, thankfully rumored to be more of a greatest hits then the last one. Although I do agree about the new stuff, not as big a fan, in fact I really don't care for much of American Life :(

I see. And I always thought Stevie should have played Alice.

the video from the cure with Robert Smith in a wooden box, being thrown of a cliff.. Close To Me? I'm bad with titles! I remember being surplussed by that one as a child, "huh"? Another one of their videos from the same time was very strange too. Liked it a lot.
That's the only band I could think off that hasn't been mentioned already.
Oh hold on,
- Wham! Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go  those white clothes and the backup singers... I could mention all their other hits too, of course, just think of the video from Last Christmas :D
- now I'm thinking of all those British bands from that era: how about Duran Duran: Wild Boys! I'm surprised my mother let me watch that one!

The Wham one is hilarious.

When I think of DD, I picture Simon Le Bon hanging off the boat in Rio or running through the jungle in the hat in Hungry Like The Wolf.

CHOOSE LIFE!! Yeah, love George!

I've never seen the Last Christmas video. :(

Duran Duran...love them too. My fave video is Reflex because it's full of energy.

GardenStateGirlie 04-30-2004 02:12 PM

Last night I had VH1 Classics on and was cracking up. Do you guys remember the song Road To Nowhere? That video is SO lame  Oh, and Flock of Seagulls...I Ran...the big hair and the camera spinning around the room

It's incredibly cheesy, they're out playing in the snow, they have christmas dinner with their girlfriends... add to that the eighties' fashion sense and highlighted hairdo's:laugh:

They'll always be remembered for that.

Two more:

- The Go-Gos doing the totally fake water skiing

- Jake

GardenStateGirlie 05-02-2004 12:19 AM

Beastie Boys throwing the party and trashing the living room in You Gotta Fight. One of the old MTV News anchors actually made her debut in that video

Dexy's Midnight Runners- Come On Eileen...suspenders...no shirt....no good. I still remember the dance they did throughout the street.

Thomas Dolby - She Blinded Me With Science...the old guy exclaiming SCIENCE! every five seconds...I believe he ends up on the roof of the house

You said the Go-Go's now i'm thinking B52's with Loveshack...the huge red convertable driving down the road and Ru-Paul hanging out in the shack

Also, the Bangles...Walk Like an Egyptian.

darklinensuit 05-02-2004 10:01 AM

Yeah, I thought of She Blinded Me With Science and Walk Like An Egyptiaqn, but I hate those two songs so much I couldn't bring myself to type them until now. Especially the science one. :(

Hey, I never said they were good songs

Paula Abdul - Opposites Attract. Her boyfriend was a cartoon rat. Hmm.. perhaps Paula ought to consider being the spokeswoman for Quiznos...

I love when he makes fun of old contestants for their fifteen minutes of fame ending, as if he himself is more than a flash in the bedpan.
