Lyrics only Stevie can get away with (and we LOVE her for it)!

"And she'll go FAST like a jetplane
And then FAST like a starstream"
(Sister Honey)

"She says, 'The sky is crying'
He says, 'The sky is blue'
Can you get into that?"
(Juliet)

LOVE-IT! :blob1:

Others?

wondergirl9847 04-18-2004 12:38 AM

Hmmm....

Sorcerer
Who is the master
Man and woman on a star stream
In the middle of a snow dream
Sorcerer
Show me the high life
Come over
Let me put you on ice

And as all arch angels do to you
And as all arch enemies will finally do to you, too

But I like some kind of TIME/LIFE edition,
Tradition, competition...

"some carry a stiletto in their garter along with everything else....that they carry."

so, that's what she's got going on behind those layers of chiffon?

i'm sure there's some kind of poetic meaning to this but when i first heard it thought "what the hell does that mean? she's stuffing things in her panty hose now?

was the "been caught stealin" video (jane's addiction) loosely based on Stevie?

laurie816 04-18-2004 08:23 AM

Let's see here...

Some of the ones that make me go HUH??

"Here I am dramatic"
"Here I am not waiting"
"Here I am not listening"

...I picture Stevie with a slide projector telling us where she is

"I understand your position, I withdraw my decision...well, i've got no more information for you"...Spy Girl Stevie??

"Children of the world, the forgotten chimpanzee"...just to hear Stevie sing chimpanzee in a song is priceless

"ooh, and you're consistent HEY and that's good!"...is it Stevie or Tony Robbins Motivational Speaker (or is it Roberts??)

"When you lose your sight and there's nothing to see"...kinda redundant kinda redundant

"Everything all around me is electric now, but I haven't burned a candle in a real long time"...Yes, I'm sure (like Joe said in the previous post) that there is some poetic meaning, but my response is always WTF ;)

DownOnRodeo 04-18-2004 08:32 AM

So I walked on down the line away from you
Maybe my attention was more than you could do
One man, well he would not call
He asked me for too much, that was all
Stand back stand back, in the middle of my room I did not hear from you

Lollipop (no wait, make that a degree in linguistics) for anyone who can explain this to me!

Somebody said last year that the line is the aisle she walked down for her wedding.
I think the guy who asked for too much & came nowhere near that wedding is Lindsey.
A chocolate tootsie pop better be here shortly. I don't need no friggin' talk dergree.

I don't think that's redundant. She might mean you're blind and there's nothing out there to see anyway.

darklinensuit 04-18-2004 12:51 PM

"Wassamaddababay" is just too easy to point out.

"I know everybody loves it, but the tear falling to the floor line in Love Is makes me cringe.

These are baffling but sound good:

"And black moons in those eyes of hers made more sense to me"

"And the guardian of your challenge does not cry"

"So about the moon and her sisters/How dare he take them prisoner/Well, if she had flung out her heart against him, then in all her wisdom/Oooh, that was a mystery"

"But his eyes want for her much more/That's not so different from the way that he says/Don't hide behind your hair that way, baby/Don't hide behind your hair/It's a bit of gold and braid/Easy come the tears"
(I'm picturing Stevie with her hair brushed like Cousin It, though I don't understand how you can hide your eyes behind just a bit of gold and braid anyway. Maybe she Bo Dereked her hair and then pinned the braids across her face? My tears would come easy, too.

Her other candle references deal with stress/healing, i.e., Illume, Candlebright or with artistic expression/life, i.e., Lady From The Mountain.

Or maybe the candle here is a euphemism for drugs? My life is electric but I'm not reaching for the drugs like I used to?

Anyway, every time I hear her sing the word Electric I think of the horrible vibrating neon that is the Paper Doll video.

"You fill the room with the wind and the rain and the water."
"There was a light that lighted the way to the chamber where they spent all their time."
"They take a limousine because everything else is taken care of."
"The clouds never expect it when it rains by the sea." (Casual listeners don't get this song at all.)

Johnny Stew 04-18-2004 02:49 PM

"I am a cliff-dweller from the old school."

"In silence she says, 'Excalibur.'"

"Her horse is like a dragonfly, and she is just a fool."

I can't imagine any other vocalist making lines like those sound so moving and profound... but then, that's part of Stevie's genius, isn't it? :D

I've often wondered if this was somehow a reference to John, whose boat was named "The Challenge."

If not, then it seems that John is the only member of the 'Rumours'-era Mac that Stevie hasn't written a song for/about!

Did he call it "the challenge" because he thinks that he is the challenge on christine's mind from the song "the challenge" on her solo record? :D

diamondsnake 04-18-2004 07:35 PM

"You can ride hide atop your pony, I know you won't fall, cause the whole thing's phoney" What a way to begin the first song on her first record? LOL

"Better run for your life said the mad hatter, alright said Alice, I'm going back, to the other side of the mirror!" Who else would have the nerve to put this fairytale to music?

Actually, John named his boat "The Challenge," back in 1978 (I believe it was)... Christine's song wasn't released until 1984.

So one wouldn't be too far off base, to assume that perhaps her song was written with John in mind. :)

And I also loved laurie816's slide show image...

Here's my contribution to the weird lyrics, from the bridge of Edge of Seventeen:

The clouds never expect it
When it rains
But the sea changes colors
But the sea...
Does not change

jadegypsy 04-19-2004 01:53 PM

lyrics

from Standback
"la la la la la, do do..." How very creative...

"it is green it is aquamarine, it is colors I have never seen" I actually adore this line but really, it does sound a bit, ummm yeah...

"you could be my silver springs my blue green colors flashing" anyone else and I would be like "ummm yeah..."

"just like the great dark wing, within the wings of a storm..."

"see your sunrise loves to go down..."

"like a diamond snake in a black sky" In earlier days I would've wondered "and what were we smokeing today?"

the lines don't make a great amount of sense per say but I do love the images they conjure up.

Yes. This is what I was getting at in starting this thread. Awesome choices!

Good 'uns! Regarding the "la la la, do do!": not creative, true, but SO effective! :)

Isn't it:

"The clouds never expect it when it rains but the sea changes colors, but the sea does not change"?

("No the sea does not change, DOES IT?!" Sorry. Red Rocks attack. :) )

The rest of that verse fits well into this thread, too:
"So with the slow, (sad), graceful flow of age
I went forth with an age-old desire to please
On the edge of seventeen"

Glad to see Street Angel picks! That song (Listen To The Rain) has more goodies for this thread:

"Well you're a victim
Phantom of the opera
And you've been everywhere
And you live in dark shadows

You do what you want to
Thre's no beauty and the beast here
No, no, no
There's no beauty and the beast here
You're not like anyone else
You're just an instant flash of light that shines!"

God, her vocals on this one are mind blowing too! I love this song! Sorry, I'm getting distracted :distress: :)

EveryHour 04-19-2004 03:24 PM

Sidebar:

I was listening to If I Were You and it's interesting to me that you can tell Stevie didn't write most of the song (she specified at the time that the part she wrote is the middle: "I believe that love is a living thing..."). Especially the "Every boy must learn to be a man / Well maybe I can help you, yes I can". That line makes a little grin appear on my face every time 'cause I just can't ever see Stevie writing such a line and it's weird to hear her sing it.

Gotta love these...

You think you hear demons
I think you are the demon
In this place
Where the images are born
You remember your childhood
Aw, in fiery sequences
..and the sun goes down
Filling the air with color and the winds lift you up to God ...

You like to be twisted by the force
You like to be shaken by the wind

I know, you know
Watching you go is like dying
Is like dying

Take it to the limit
When the winds come up
Crazy men, crazy women
Cryin' out for love
You'd like to save her
But you just can't give it up

You'd rather be wrapped up
In the arms of the storm
You'd rather be wrapped up
In the arms of the storm
Crazy men, crazy women
In the arms of the storm

"The light that shines through the shiny night is a lamp that I carried from my mothers home."

Such a cheesy line, but Stevie pulls it off.

I think the whole song "Imperial Hotel" falls into "only Stevie," as does "Ghosts."

Also:

All of Sable on Blonde and Goldfish And The Ladybug
All of Nightbird, especially the line about pulling back the net

"Unbraid with all the love like a soft silver chain" (WTF!)

"Fire on fire/Rain on my face" (Love this quote)

"And timeless is the prisoner in disguise" (I'm picturing Saddam in Groucho glasses)

"Long nets of white cloud my memory"

"You are in love with/And I'm ready to sail/It's just a feeling"

"Rhinestone collections all the time"

"Take your violet and blue morning with you"

"In the crystalline knowledge of you"

"Sunflowers and your face fascinate me/You love only the tallest tree"

Do you still think it's "WTF" when you include the whole verse?

"Someday when I'm older
And my hair is silver-gray
Unbraid with all the love that you have
Like a soft, silver chain"

Ali 04-20-2004 01:28 PM

"And she stares at the stairs
Ooh, there are many things to stare at these days"

There's a few other instances of her using the same words over and over again in a short period or really flaunting the onomonopoetia but this is the first one that comes to mind.

The lyrics of SOTM are utter greatness. I mean, she really unfolds a little narrative here that you can totally envision being acted out, it's quite filmic really.

How about this:

..."oh, someday, when we're older, and my hair is silver gray,

huh? I'm picturing old people playing with each others' hair. It's crazy, but sweet.

You wait for love ..and you hate waiting...
You say "I hate this!"

She turned around in her room...
What could she take and still survive the fire?
But then again, there was a window

My personal favorite-

"And the summer became the fall... I was not ready for the Winter... It makes no difference at all, 'cause I wear boots all Summer long."

ALL of Imperial Hotel

"Long nets of white cloud my memory"

"He reminded me of blue denim"

There are many, many more, but these are the only ones I can think of at the moment.
