Favorite cover of a Fleetwood Mac song?
I hate covers of FM songs because, well I just do! But then again they might be FM fans, just like me, who wants to sing one of their songs. I mean, if I ever became a famous singer I would put tons of FM covers on my albums! But I really don't like most Mac covers. Maybe FM is just too good and no one is better? I Especially despise the Dixie Chicks doing Landslide! So, that is my least favorite.
My favorite, however, is GYOW by the Cranberries. What is yours? |
Matchbox 20's Never Goin' Back Again. Followed closely by The Goo Goo Dolls' I Don't Wanna Know and Hole's Gold Dust Woman.
|
Aarrghh... dudes. Anything from that Rumours Tribute is a travesty.
My favorite covers, at least the ones I can thing of, are I Know I'm Not Wrong by The Gourds, Storms and Save Me a Place by Camper Van Beethoven, and Gold Dust Woman by Hole. The Chicks' version of Landslide is pretty cool. |
when i heard the sneak pre of "go your own way" by wilson phillips i liked it!    |

as for Courtney, one can either love or hate her, but the woman's a true rockn'roll spirit, and she's doing justice to this song, you can hear she's getting the "nicksian vibe" there. |
Sister Hazel's GDW rocked IMO. I saw them play it live and they were great. But, that is about it for that record IMO.

a love the Camper Van Beethoven Tusk remake - the only FM cover to stay true to the spirit of the band's creativity. Everything else is embarrasing.

Did Judas Priest cover Green Manalishi on one of their (if there are more then one) live-albums? I thought so... heard it once...quite impressive... |
Gypsy, by "home", from the Patron Saints cd (Gourds are great too, there)
it's just very quirky and weird, I love it. Closing My Eyes, by Naked Blue, on "Rattlesnake guitar - the music of Peter Green" Stop Draggin' My Car Around - Weird Al Yankovic:D |
Hole's "Gold Dust Woman." It's the only cover that adds something new to the song and succeeds. I love Chaka Kahn's "Everywhere," too.
|
I like Matchbox 20's "Never Going Back Again," Tonic's "Second Hand News," Goo Goo Dolls' "I Don't Want To Know," and Sister Hazel's "Gold Dust Woman," from the 'Legacy' CD... but I could live without the rest.
I also love Hole's rendition of "Gold Dust Woman," and Cyndi Lauper's "You Make Loving Fun" is pretty fun too. :) The Dixie Chicks' best version of "Landslide," was the one they did on the Divas Las Vegas broadcast, WITH Stevie. |
Hole's "Gold Dust Woman," hands down. No seconds.
I LOVE that version. |
Hole - GDW
Talullah - Oh Daddy (*ducks* I love this song in any form) matchbox 20 - NGBA Tantric - The Chain CVB - Storms, Brown Eyes |
Eva Cassidy's cover of "Songbird" is gorgeous.
|
Whiskeytown! how could I forget that one, it's great!
|
Dang, I didn't know Whiskeytown did Dreams. Is it on an album? If not, how can I get it?
|
I can mail you the mp3? it's about 5 mb.
I don't think it's on any official album, it's a live performance. |
WOW!!!
I've never heard most of the ones Chilid posted! Very interesting stuff.
My fave cover...uhhh...I've heard some really bad ones. LOL I do like Goo Goo Dolls' version of IDWK and Santana's Black Magic Woman. :) |
I love the Corrs version of dreams :o *sorry*
Would love to hear the pointer sisters do Hypnotized!! |
I really like Eva Cassidy's "Songbird" and Leo Kottke's "World Turning".
There is also a really nice cover of "Never Going Back Again" on an album by a guy named Colin Reid, the vocals are by Eddi Reader (of Fairground Attraction). |

Yep. They recorded a studio version for their Hell Bent For Leather album that was released in 1979. Their Best Of... album even leads off with it. I seem to recall that there are two or three different live versions by JP from various tours. Quote:

covers
I am sooo glade I have been spared hearing a few of these. I can't imagine anyone but Stevie singing Rhiannon and Gypsy. No offense to anyone who likes these covers, I have songs by all artists that I can't imagine being covered by other people.
Anyways ones that I do like: Dreams by the Corrs Songbird by Eva Cassidy (what a voice) Landslide by DC (only b/c other ppl now must admit they like a fleetwood mac song, otherwise by brain has trouble not hearing Stevie sing it since the only image that comes to mind is of S&L in concert performing it). The rest I haven't heard, although I would like to hear GDW by Courtney Love. |

My favorite cover would be the Dixie Chicks' remake of "Landslide," granted nothing could overpower Stevie Nicks' version, but they did a great job with it nevertheless. That entire CD [Home] is great. I never thought I would be saying that about a country release...who knew? |
Mah fav'rite would have tah be the Gold Dust Woman from "Patron Saints of Pop" -- ad libbed lyrics & all.
|
Tori Amos doing Landslide is the ultimate Fleetwood Mac cover for me.
|
Thanks Gazza for posting all the cover versions of FM songs. There are some I had no idea existed - but I'll most definitely be hunting them down now. Particularly the John Frusciante - Landslide - I love his guitar work.
My personal favourite covers would have to be Seaweeds version of 'Go Your Own Way' the songs energy lends itself well to their slightly punk approach. I love the Smashing Pumpkins version of 'Landslide' very cool. Camper Van Beethoven 'Tusk' Tribute album is fantastic & I must mention my disappointment in the Rumours Legacy tribute album - this cd lays at the bottom of my cd pile. Jamie |
oh well
Gazza's list is lacking a very heavy Oh well-cover by The Black Crowes feat. Jimmy page on their live-ledzeppelin-cover-album. One of my faves.
|
Oh, God, chiliD's nit-picking again!
Gazza's list also is missing many of the covers on the Rattlesnake Guitar: The Music Of Peter Green album (except it DOES list Ian Anderson's "Man Of The World" & Arthur Brown's take on "Green Manalishi")
Hypnotized - Pointer Sisters (GREAT!) Hypnotized - Driving Blind (good!) Black Magic Woman - Dennis Brown (reggae, mon!) Man Of The World - Midge Ure (really, really good) Man Of The World - Justin Hayward (as it should, it sounds like the Moody Blues) Don't Stop - KC & The Sunshine Band (best cover I've heard of this song) You Make Loving Fun - Cyndi Lauper Oh Well - (the aforementioned) Black Crowes w/Jimmy Page Oh Well - Kenny Wayne Shepherd (not that great) Oh Well - Oh Well (12" single...techno-dance arrangement) Oh Well - Bob Welch (not sure if it counts, since he's an ex-Mac member) Oh Well - Billy Sheehan (until Welch's recent cover, only one that covered parts one AND two) Rattlesnake Shake - ZZ Top (only played it live...it's on several ZZ Top bootlegs) Stop Messin' Round - Aerosmith (on their brand new album) Sisters Of The Moon - Walter Egan I Loved Another Woman - Rick Vito (again, not sure if it counts due to Rick's membership in Mac) Homework - Rick Vito (ditto) Oh, yeah, and BTW: Quote:

Not my list guys, that site lists covers for loads of bands.
Guns N Roses have done Oh Well live I believe. Might have just been Slash jammin' though. |
Goo Goo Dolls I Don't Want to Know is the only cover i prefer to the original song.
|
Pretty obscure, even I haven't heard it in more than 20 years-- but Melba Moore did a fantastic cover of 'Dreams' that got some airplay on the East coast circa 1979.
The production values were innovative and jazz-tinged, especially on the choruses and it sounded great on the radio. I believe at the end of the song, part of the chorus was repeated a-capella and with a lot of echo, it was cool. (Moore is probably around Stevie's age, and many years ago she won a Tony Award for a Broadway musical; and recently she was seen in the Beyonce-Cuba Gooding Jr movie 'The Fighting Temptations'). |
Matchbox20!
My favorite cover of any FM song is Matchbox20's "Never Going Back Again." By playing it in a minor key, they took the bright and cheery sheen off of it and exposed the dark bitterness that lurks under the song's surface. I love the additional overlay of "Chain keep us together" with Rob Thomas' tortured screaming of "NEVER GOING BACK!"
Awesome! |
