Rockin Single Mix
 

I downloaded the Single Mix of Thrown Down...and what the ****! I was stunned. The song sounds so much more upbeat and I love the guitar work. I would have rather had this version on the cd and I think we as mac fans need to get this song on the radio somehow. I'm sure if it got played it would hit. Ideas??

I've heard Thrown Down on the radio a few times, mostly late at nite on the rock-lite stations...

This is the first I've heard of a single mix for "Thrown Down"... I've seen some promo CD singles on eBay & etc., but they've all been the album version. From where did you download it?

Are you possibly talking about the version everyone calls the "Wall of Sound Demo"?

I'd love to hear ANY new Mac on the radio, but Houston stations won't touch it. And believe me, I've tried. I've e-mailed, posted on message boards, called the request lines, and even flirted big-time with one of the deejays I met in a bar right after the album came out. ;)

The officially released single is nothing more than the album version (by "official," I'm referring to what's been released to radio, not to a single we can purchase in stores), but some fans have heard the so-called "Wall Of Sound" version on the radio, and have taken to referring to this as the "single version."

As it stands, the "Wall Of Sound" version is still just an early work-in-progress take on the song, and some radio programmers must have downloaded it from the internet (like we did), liked it, and decided to play that version in lieu of the album mix... further complicating the history of that particular version! :)

Is that for certain? What if Lindsey just needed to have two different "finished" versions of the same song so that he could choose between the two of them? ;)

For me the "Wall Of Sound" version always sounded like a finished take; you just don't take things that far if you're just suggesting a particular arrangement for it.

I'm glad they decided for the other version to be put on SYW. :)

Well as much as a Lindsey-fan I am...I was surprised that I liked the radio version of the song "Say you will" better. I believe Chris-Lord Alge mixed it. He's much better than the John Shanks fella...Shanks, I swear to God mixes almost all of his songs the same way and he recycles the same guitar parts almost exclusively. (ooops....sorry to get on the preaching horse).

Anyways back to the radio version of Say You Will... It's much more lively and has a better feel. I must say Lindsey's guitar parts were better on that take. For those of you that havent heard it...you can probably find the radio single on Ebay like I did.

I was all psyched to have another version to collect.

I love the WOS version - much more firey & with edgy harmonies on the chorus.

I think the vocals were the issue here. Stevie's main verses sound a little rough for my taste. Maybe she was having trouble getting the "feel" of her performance to match Lindsey's production? Maybe that's why they retreated to the more subdued (in comparison) version on the album...

Also, think of the "you'll have to sing it that high every night on stage" discussion from the last VH1 special. I don't know if Stevie was talking specifically about "Thrown Down", but her chorus part in the WOS version is much higher that what wound up on the album. And we all know for a fact she doesn't sing the high parts on stage anymore (or, really, ever did after 1980).

Although the term might not be wholly accurate, I consider it to be a "work-in-progress," simply because the fact that the album version is so different, lends me to believe that the band wasn't entirely satisfied with what they had and where they wanted to go with the song.

So the "Wall Of Sound" version is one of the stops along the way.

Do you mean Mark Needham?
John Shanks didn't mix any of the tracks on 'Say You Will,' and he only has two co-production credits on the album ("What's The World Coming To" and "Peacekeeper").

Mark Needham mixed the album... with the exception of "Destiny Rules," which was mixed by Chris Lord-Alge.

Quite honestly, I think Needham was the wrong choice for mixer. Lord-Alge's single mix of "Say You Will" is a good example of that, as his mix sparkles, and packs far more punch than Needham's mix, in my opinion.
Sonically, "Destiny Rules" is also one of the best sounding tracks on the album. Again, in my opinion.

To me, the "wall-of-sound" version of "Thrown Down" sounds more like Fleetwood Mac than the album version...which sounds like a song that didn't make the final cut on TISL.

WOS version
 

I LOVE the WOS version....just the opening alone makes me sit up and take listen of this song. :nod: The CD version is very slow and plodding to me. I do like the shakin your faith part, but I could live without it, if it means the WOS version would have been on the album instead.

For me, the SYW version seems to bebuilt around the vocals, whereas the vocals on the WOS version just don't seem to fit well, for me. Musically, it also sounds strained or forced, and its so jam-packed with instrumentation that theres no sonic 'breathing space' like the SYW track has. In fact, in that way, for me, the WOS version is more of a TISL track, whereas the SYW version is classic FM/BN.

Did I miss a meeting ?

I don't recall ever hearing this quote. Which special was it in ?

This is from the Extra content on TVOBFM Disc 1....it's from the Say You Will recording sessions as well...Stevie refers to her part in Say You Will the song as "monotonal"

I downloaded the single mix from stevie nicks info. I thought the wall of sound version sounded differemt. oh well. i still think it is an awesome mix of the song.

I still don't see how so many people prefer the WOS version. I agree with DownOnRodeo, the WOS sounds like a TISL outake while the album version sounds like what would happen if Dreams and Gypsy got together and had a baby. It's Fleetwood Mac all the way. And the Shakin the Faith verse is the best part of the song. Micks Drumming, John's Bass, the guitar, and especially Stevie's vocals are all much better on the album version.

I love both versions. But prefer the album version because of the extra "Shakin Your Faith..." verse. To me it's a nice twist in the song compared to the WOS version.

well this all certainly sheds some light on this version of "Thrown Down". I downloaded it about a year ago and had really been wondering what it was and why it was so different than the album version. I really like it...it COULD work very well as a single mix.

I wonder how some stations are getting their paws on the Wall of Sound (assuming it's the one people are hearing) version? The singles cds we're getting at our stations only have the album version.


I've yet to hear Thrown Down on the radio. Ever.

I have heard both Steal your Heart Away and Thrown Down while walking in various super markets, but... other than that i have yet to hear them on the radio. thats why i think we should do what we had for TISL first single request the song and get it out there.
