What was your favorite stuffed animal when you were little?

I had a teddy bear, of course.
Two stories come to mind. First, when I was a baby doctors thought I'd never walk due to a serious hip problem. On my first birthday I got up to walk to this bear that somebody brought for me. Needless to say, this shocked the folks.
Second, my former next-door-neighbor (who is still one of my best friends & went to TimeSpace and The Dance with me in Philly) got hold of my bear when we were maybe five years old. I don't remember this, but apparently, according to my parents, she touched herself "inappropriately" with the bear & I ran away screaming. After that I wouldn't touch the bear again, I'm told.
The bear died when our basement flooded years later. RIP.

I had 'Biff the Bear". He went with me everywhere. My Grandmother even crocheted outfits for him. I don't remember what happened to him, however. I think that he might have just fell apart.

Love the name. Did he belong to the country club or something?

Fluffy

My childhood stuffed animal was a little white rabbit that I later named "Fluffy." I believe I got this as a gift at my first Christmas (when I was about 4 months old!). It actually looked like a rabbit when I got it. Later on, it didn't resemble a rabbit at all.

Eventually, he was missing an ear and his front legs. My grandmother began sewing old socks over him to keep him in one piece. She also added buttons (as necessary) for his eyes. But I never went to bed without him -- ever. My grandmother even went as far as sewing me a brand new Fluffy -- she made it the same...with one ear, button eyes, etc. but she used a pink sock. So that became Pinky, Fluffy's girlfriend.

In fact, I have a collage of family pictures on my wall, and I can look up right now and see this pic of me and my dad taken when I was 2. And I'm holding the messed up, one-eared Fluffy.

I'm sure he's still in a box somewhere.:) Pinky, though, bit the dust.

He was a talking bear at one point but I don't even remember that. He was the "in" toy of the late 60s.

Thank goodness for grandmothers. I had a tiger that I exhausted my creative juices to name "Little Tiger". Before long, my grandmother had sewn strawberry patches on him for eyes because the real ones had fallen out.
Believe me, nobody else had a tiger like that one.

My teddy bear, "Brown Bear". Original, eh? I still have him, he's like my good luck charm.... LOL

I also had this Garfield doll that I got when I was like, seven... he had a tie-dyed tee shirt and I think a hippie-headband. Still have him, too. Also, I just got this huuuuuge penguin pillow/stuffed animal for Christmas that I just adore. It's the cutest penguin thing I've ever seen. :)

Teddy bear...

I've had this teddy bear (named...wait for it.....Teddy  ) since I was 2...he's 25 years old. My mom got him so that he could keep me from falling off my bed when I was little. He's about 2 feet tall.

I remember I took him to school one time dressed in karate gear I made. LMAO!!!

dissention 01-14-2004 10:22 PM

My favorite stuffed animal was my Nonnie. :D When I was born, my mom put it in with me in the hospital and I slept with it for ten damn years. I loved that little cat; it was cuter than anything I've ever seen. I still have it in my bedroom just because I'm a sentimental sap and it reminds me of good times.

estranged4life 01-14-2004 10:41 PM

Well...

I had a treasured small stuffed blue/pink elephant and a plastic "Tweety Bird" as a child...

Fortunately, I still own both of 'em as they are currently in my front room on a shelf along with my CLASSIC wooden fire-truck which still has the wooden firemen, working wheels & fire bell/firehose intact!

Betsy the Panda Bear and Brownie the Bear. I still have Brownie. :)

This is a bit embarassing, but what the hell . . .

I had a "Snake". Yes, only now do I find the whole sexual inuendo thing humorous.

It was actually one of those baby crib "bumpers" that I used to drag around behind me every where I went. And I used to put the one end in my mouth (yes, more inuendo  ). That thing had to be just so gross. It is amazing I didn't get some disease and die from all the germs that must have been on that thing.

My first actual memory of being super pissed off was when my mother took it away from me. I later found it in a box under my parent's bed. I think my mom still has that damn thing!

Chelsea

I have this little great white shark I named "Chelsea". I had her for a long time.

I got her when my family had their reunion at the beach. I found the doll in a gift shop and loved her ever since. She holds great memories, and sad ones too.

She was the doll I hugged and cried on when I found out, several months after the reunion, my grandfather passed away from cancer.

Thankfully, I still have her.

DrummerDeanna 01-15-2004 09:59 AM

Great thread! lol...actually my favorite "stuffed animal" was my blankie..does that count? My mom got it at a baby shower for me, before I was born, my aunt made it...and here's the embarassing part...I STILL HAVE IT! hahaha...both my sister, who's ten years older than I, and I have our blankies hahaha...

Okay but as for real stuffed animals my favorites as a kid were: a stuffed monkey that played music (wind up) and his name is Monkey...

Then there is Bear Bear, my favorite Bear, which I still have...

Then there was this ugly little doll that's hair literally stood straight up hahhaa..and her name was Pillpeen hahaha I have NO CLUE where I came up with that weird ass name...but there you have it :)

Siri Ruane 01-15-2004 12:36 PM

I had a life size brown bear that wore overalls. I called him big bear, and because of his size, I once married him, and the lipstick stains on his nose never did come off...

And then there was my monkey collection I had till I was about 8. I had probably 25 stuffed monkeys that took up the majority of my bed.

Is there some sigificance to the hippie theme? Was the giver at Woodstock?

The monkey sounds cool!
Why is Bear Bear your favorite? Does he dial Little Caser's for you? (Pizza Pizza;) )
Pillpeen sounds like the name of some obscure Stevie demo.

Jadegypsy is pleased to announce the engagement of her daughter, Muffy Vanderbear, to Biff the Bear, son of WelshWitchPMD nee Pattie of Rhode Island. The two honeybears with the country club member names look forward to an intimate hibernation after a honeymoon on the SYW Tour.

I had a Paddington Bear when I was little. I used to sleep with him because I was afraid of the dark, and since he was from Darkest Peru, I figured he had my back. I had him for a long time, but when I went away to school, my dad and his wife had a garage sale and sold him and the rest of my stuffed animals for fifty cents a piece. The big sap that I am, I was horrified. Sometimes I take comfort in the fact that one day my father will be passing down his Alfa Romeo (the second son) to me. I'll let you all know when I'll be having my garage sale! ;)

Ah, parents...
I remember finding that my mother had thrown out my old comic book collection, which was already worth thousands over fifteen years ago. Her defense was that I hadn't touched the comics since I was thirteen. I tried explaining about the money, but it didn't seem to sink in until I mentioned that forty years from now when we're shopping for a nursing home & she wants the nice one, she shouldn't complain that I'm on a budget.
(Looks like she'll e joining us at the Ledgie home. Anybody here like mah jong?)

Lee 01-19-2004 04:30 PM

I had a stuffed red fox which I didn't know was a fox, so I called it Kitty. So I'd say my kitty aka the fox.
