Chanel, Chanel
Sararhiannon has this labeled as a demo from 1997. Does anyone have any info on this? Johnny Stew?
Thanks |
Okay
I found the lyrics too. I'm going to post them here...with thanks of course to Sararhiannon.
Sararhiannon, can you maybe please post this song. This is completely new to me... I know how Hard it is to keep promises secret Real secrets, the hardest of all Well, I need to go but the Free spirit has been sold And now she's gone As you leave the shore Oh, remember there is always a chance You may never return Take your time, push down your wall Well, I have run from places where I could not speak And neither could I breathe, Well I wake up in the middle of the night now Well, I need to know... lady traveler Leave the room the way it was Well, the sentiment, well they can't stand up in the darkness Ooh, Chanel, Chanel She was herself She was not his She was not anything that she had loved Because he would have lost if he had loved Ending what he had grown, what he called mortal, Such a beauty, whoa, But your love would never be lost Oh, he knew there was something there Whoa, it was his hands, leaned against her side Ooh, that feeling from the past Well, that is something that she understands Oh, lady traveler, Leave the room the way it was When they fall, and they can't stand up in the darkness Oh, take your time I remember a man when he said to me He said, "What do you do?" I sing... |
Excuse me. I think I need to pick my jaw up from off the floor. Good lord.

Actually, I think those are pretty awful lyrics. |

When I first read the title I thought of the "Rachelle! Rachelle!" musical episode of Seinfeld.:) I couldn't imagine Stevie writing a song about that. But then again, I do love her Ballad of the Marble Rye.;)

It's a real song. It's from 1997 and apparently Sheryl Crow worked on it with Stevie for TISL. The version that's circulating is about three and a half minutes long. I'm trying to snag it, I'll let y'all know when I do. :)

Ooh! Good deal, Dissention! :)

I hope dissention is able to nab a copy of the track... I'd love to hear it. It's always cool when something new leaks out just when you've started to think that everything that possibly could leak, had. :D |

Ive heard it...and its pretty good. A little rough sounding, a little plodding and the lyrics make no sense, but she makes it somewhat intense towards the end.
Sheryl sings back up i guess, butit really could be anyone. Hopefully someone can post it when available. |

The problem is that the two songs don't even remotely resemble each other, musically or lyrically. But some of our tapes of "Mirror, Mirror" are at least fifteen years old, & I think the recording of "Chanel, Chanel" is, too. |
Lord have mercy, that reads like a Klonopin babble.

It's more than that; it's what I like to call Stevie's "self-indulgent-'I'm-a-singer--and-I-gave-up-a-hubby-and-brats-for-it- dammit'" babble. |

thanks Heather!!!
I personally like all the Trouble in Shangi-la demos...I like their raw emotional quality & detailed but rough poetry/lyrics of these demos prior to the musicality that Stevie's producers always bring to the final product. it was probably pretty tough for Sheryl to add pop/rock music riffs to the complicated lyrics of this song which is probably why this demo was ultimately dropped. it seems that most of Stevie's poems end up being "chopped" by completion of a final song. This is why we get such great endings to her songs, her and the girls trying to fit in more lyrics at the end of a song. I have to argue the Klonopin/babble comments...the Shangri-la demos clearly show Stevie's creativity and vocal strength returning... the end lyrics are the crux of the song... what do you do??? I sing... |

Lori has some nice moments there at the end. This isn't a bad song, really. It has moments. It ends suddenly, and I wonder WTF about some of these lyrics. However, it is a good vocal, and she does some interesting things with the melody that kind of make me forget that I don't really get what she's talking about. That's the "Stevieness" of it all, I suppose. |
it may be RAL but the quality, sound and lyrics for me are TISL era. To me, Chanel Chanel sounds like a companion piece of Space Needle...her music voice on this demo sounds to me like her current mature voice but I can also hear the places where you hear her old voice, especially towards the end.
and Stevie in interviews does give Sheryl credit as the one person who can bring back her original voice and pushes Stevie's vocals to the max especially on TISL's Sorcerer. So if Chanel is a Sheryl TISL Production, the same truth would apply here. so I am going to agree with sararhiannon and stick with Chanel being a TISL outtake demo... |

I vote 80's and probably RAL era. Also, at the very beginning, she sounds like she has a cold when she is speaking about the "shrill sisters:
|
It does sound like RAL era... Maybe she re-recorded it for TISL with Sheryl, but we don't have that version?
It's confusing, though, because it seems like the song could well be called "In the Darkness," a title that she registered with the copyright office in 2000. Most people have assumed this was an early name for "Everybody Finds Out," but that's never been confirmed as far as I know. In fact, sararhiannon has "In the Darkness" listed as an alternate title. PAu-2-509-624 Title: In the darkness. Description: Sound cassette & lyrics sheets. I like this song, but the music and lyrics just don't click very well together in my opinion...

I *LOVE* it! I love that laid back, yet intense feel of it, and the raw gritty sound of it. I love this song. I think the lyrics are excellent - full of a simple kind of symbolism - "when they fall, and they can't stand up in the darkness..." ~ awesome. don't think she's babbling at all. It's not one of her "Once upon a time" songs where she is literally telling us word for word a story, but I see situations and lessons here. Haven't you ever been in a relationship where you weren't really yourself. You kind of squashed that part of you down, to fit into the relationship. And it wasn't all that happy or great, but you stayed in it. I love the "she was not anything that she loved" - I love that whole paragraph/verse.
It ends too abruptly. The song has a really mellow flow to it, so the ending was too sudden. I would have liked for the music to still go on after she says "I sing" (which was so awesome), and then if she could have paused, and then sang that line again one more time, then let the music still linger a moment and slowly fade out. But I really love it. Not sure when it was made. I can see the TISL sound, for a moment, yet also the older Stevie feel to it. The part about the man asking her what she does, that reminds me of "well tell me, just what is it that you do....." from the song Julia. I am probably more likely to guess pre-TISL, and more 80's. But I really have no clue. She just used to have that more "gutteral" emotion (sp? is that even the word I am trying to say here?) in her voice back then, especially in her demos. I'd love a raw, gritty Stevie album. Know what I mean? Like when she sings At Last, and that Baby Doll demo, etc....even the Blue Lamp demo where she's a little more heavy and wild in it. Oh, and the Whole Lotta Trouble demo - she just belts it out and is so raw. It's awesome. But - Chanel, Chanel - that part is funny, now that someone here mentioned Rochelle, Rochelle! lol! Hee-Hee! Thanks so much SaraRhiannon for that. I am LOVING it. Go Stevie! You rock. |
when they fall, and they can't stand up in the darkness...
I kind of get a sexual vibe from this line, Stevie is very subtle with her sexual refererence, it reminds me of "undoing the laces" to me it's about the angst associated with any kind of doomed affair...all the passion, guilt, self-doubt...so the music being so basic and raw fits that kind of a mood though the middle bridge needs much work...Because he would have lost if he had not Ended what he had found, what he called, whoa, no Such a beauty, whoa, Can never be lost but I love the ending, abruptness, it's very un-Stevielike... I remember a man when he said to me He said, "What do you do?" I sing... It reminds me of some of the lyrics in What Has Rock and Roll Ever Done for You...I think Stevie is referencing talking to a counseler during her drug rehabs so that would make the song post RAL and maybe even into the 90's if she wrote the lines during her Klonopin detox... |
I remember a man when he said to me
He said, "What do you do?" I sing... I think of this as being a reference to her first meeting with Lindsey before they sang California Dreaming together...... |
