Original Red Rover Lyrics...
Back before SYW came out, someone on the ledge posted lyrics for Lindsey's "soon to be released" album, GOS. In the thread were lyrics to Red Rover that went as followed...
When you're lonely Just come on over We may not be lovers But you can always take me over Under the covers Let's play Red Rover Makes me laugh at Lindsey's answer "it's about the God's looking down on us..." etc. etc. (but of course, he's always had those stock answers so he can dance around the actual meanings to his songs a la Peacekeeper) ;) Why do you think he changed the lyrics to not include this particular verse? Do you think he should have left them in the song? This is me trying to get the Lindsey board going...c'mon guys! Discuss!  |
I never saw that post!
WHAT?! I never saw this post! Maybe it was before I became a fan, I dunno.
That doesn't even sing well with the melody of Red Rover. LMAO!! |

I suppose this was back in 2000...perhaps before that... when everything started to leak out about GOS. Maybe for once he had lyrics before he had a melody  |
Here am I! LOL
Yep, I found Mr. Buckingham in March 2001, so that was before my time.
That's totally weird if those really are the original lyrics, because I associate Red Rover with death not sex! |

I just think it's hysterical how he can write lyrics like this and lyrics to Peacekeeper and say they're about one thing in one interview then give an entirely different meaning in a different interview with various philosophical ramblings. Lindsey will always keep us guessing  |
Sigh....

I remember hearing about these lyrics back in 2000. Someone leaked these as well as some of the lyrics to "Try for the Sun." It was right before Lindsey's demos started showing up on Ebay for ludicrous amounts. It was the first I had heard of either.
These are obviously highly sexual, lol. Unless somebody made these up back in 2000 and they were never really his lyrics, Lindsey's song definitely took a different direction, lol! And hey, a man's orgasm is known as the "little death" in French, right? lol |
I hate to get too philosophical here, but let's just say that lyrics with sexual content are not necessarily exclusive of spirituality and allusions to godliness. Going back many centuries, and we're talking BC here, the sexual union was considered by some a sacred rite, a means to reach a kind of spirituality that was otherwise elusive. If you will, to simplify it in nearly sacrilegious terms, people would experience sexual climax in order to know god.
Whether Lindsey was writing some of this stuff in that vein is impossible to know unless he comes right out and says it. His explanations about gods looking down on humanity in reference to ambiguous lyrics have given me pause at times. And after a while I started to wonder if he was reaching for that theme. Lines like "love is the sweet surprise," which may seem somewhat enigmatic on the surface, may actually have much deeper meaning. It is clear that Lindsey is into poetry and philosophy, judging from some of his more recent work, so it is not so far-fetched that he is infusing some of his work with hints at these more obscure beliefs. Then again, maybe not. |

Cammie- you guys can search every demo Lindsey ever recorded of "Red Rover" and it won't be on it. These were very rough, beginnings of thoughts about the song that got into the hands of a poster on the Ledge waaaaay before "Say You Will" was even a thought. :wavey: |

Cammie, the song you all are referring to is "Try for the SUN," not "Try for the Son." As in "SUN," the celestial object at the center of our solar system. It is not a Lindsey original, it is adapted from a song written by Donovan Leitch in 1965. Lindsey's Adapted lyrics: "Try for the Sun." Written by D. Leitch; Adapted by L. Buckingham We huddled in the derelict building My gypsy girl and I We made our bed together With the rain dropping tears in our eyes And who would be the one To say it was no good what we done? I dare anyone to say, anyone to say we were too young We were only trying for the sun Mirror, mirror in the sky Won't you look what’s happening below No one knows what’s going on Won't you give us a sign where to go? And who would be the one To say it was no good what we done? I dare anyone to say, anyone to say we were too young We were only trying for the sun And who would be the one To say it was no good what we done? I dare anyone to say, anyone to say we were too young We were only trying for the sun We were only trying for the sun We were only trying for the sun Mirror, mirror in the sky Won't you look what’s happening below Nobody knows what’s going on Won't you you give us a sign where to go? The original lyrics by Donovan, written in 1965: We stood in the windy city The gypsy boy and I We slept on the breeze in the midnight With the rain dropping tears in our eyes And who’s going to be the one To say it was no good what we done I dare a man to say I’m too young For I’m going to try for the sun We huddled in the derelict building And when he thought I was asleep He lay his poor coat round my shoulders And shivered there beside me in a heap And who’s going to be the one To say it was no good what we done I dare a man to say I’m too young For I’m going to try for the sun We sang and cracked the sky with laughter Our breath turned to mist in the cold Our years put together count to thirty But our eyes told the dawn we were old And who’s going to be the one To say it was no good what we done I dare a man to say I’m too young For I’m going to try for the sun Mirror mirror hanging in the sky Won’t you look down what’s happening here below I stand here singing to the flowers So very few people really know And who’s going to be the one To say it was no good what we done I dare a man to say I’m too young For I’m going to try for the sun We stood in the windy city The gypsy boy and I We slept on the breeze in the midnight With the rain dropping tears in our eyes And who’s going to be the one To say it was no good what we done I dare a man to say I’m too young For I’m going to try for the sun Now, I'm really a novice at lyrical interpretation, but to me, his adaptation of the song has nothing to do with a desire to have children. It is a love song. [thanks to nancy for the lyrics.] |

I really don't think Lindsey is so sexist that he'd be "only trying for the son" lol! |
Correction to my thinking!!!
:wavey: Hi Lindsey Girls! :D OH WOOOOW!!!
THANKS for posting those other great lyrics! It's Definitely SUN...Gotcha'!!! Someone else suggested that Son stuff to me fitting in with when LB wrote Family Man! My thinking HAS been changed about TRY FOR THE SUN! Sky;) P. S. Can I still be stubborn and think the beginning of his newer Peacekeeper DOES imply SON? Linz now Has His Own Son and is Worried about the World!!!:( LB sings ..."We Make All of OUR Sons...The Same!" A greater force made the celestial sun in the sky!;) FYI~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our 8 inchs of snow is turning into 9 inchs! Snowed IN!!! We'er going out to make a snow man! Thanks for Help!:) |
Cam...
Send some of that snow down to the Dallas/Fort Worth area!! I love snow...although, we rarely see it. :(

Me and Carne at least always thought it was suns as in warheads or other explosives. I think there's a few ppl who agree with that one.
No dout it probably does refer to the celestial body itself because after all, the song is about the pantheon of alien gods looking down on Earth, talking about all the galaxies they've made and how Earth is a big disappointment. :D (Aw poor Lindsey we give him such a hard time :P ) |
