Thrown Down On The Radio.....
Philadelphia's 102.9 WMGK has added both Steal Your Heart Away and Thrown Down to its playlist so call and request. I haven't heard Steal Your Heart Away yet but a friend of mine did. Thrown Down is the one, the only, WALL OF SOUND version. This excites me greatly but i'm sure will dissapoint others. At any rate, it looks like it'll be getting some play around the Delaware Valley (that sounded so dirty...lol) ;) :D
|
I completley love the wall of sound. It should've on the album:nod: Stevie's vocie/harmony is just so much better. Wouldn't it be great if they played Wall Of Sound on the AMA's;)
|
The Wall of Sound version? Oh, man! :distress: It's good, but not nearly as good as the album version!
|
AWESOME!!
I love the WOS version of TD!! I hope they play both songs in the Dallas/Fort Worth area!!

And no 'faith' verse. :( <---- That's why if they do TD at the AMAs I hope they do the album version. I guess radio stations have been given these two versions and play which they choose. Don't people think it's bizarre and unheralded to have two rather different versions of the same new song being played depending on which DJ you listen to? Make that - very different versions. But that sort of quirky scenario could only help foster interest, with people who are interested in one of the songs being intrigued about the other version, and eventually looking into it. Releasing two different versions (ie as opposed to a remix of the same version) could be a whole new radio strategy that FM has stumbled on to. I wouldn't put it past em. :) |
Christy, the radio stations are one of the few things that I miss about Philly.
And BTW, I'm still not enthralled by the WOS version. JMO once more.:wavey: - Jake |
God bless WMGK - and the fact I'll be home tomorrow to listen to it! WOOT!
I just *know* Debbi Calton is behind this...she's too cool not to be :o) |
Not a WOS fan. The album version is the one that is played on RadioRecords.com in that ad (The one where we found out about New Year's rockin eve). So maybe they were sent both. Regardless, I'm calling my radio stations and emailing them and asking them to play whichever versions they have! :)
|
I do like the "work-in-progress/Wall Of Sound" version quite a bit, but I favor the album version.
The song just isn't complete without the "shaking your faith" 2nd verse. |
I adore both versions of the song and yes, what I don't like about the WOS version is the exclusion of the second verse because to me, it's incredibly powerful. I think it's a matter of the WOS version being more radio friendly...the emphasis on the guitar...the added backing vocals...it gets me everytime I listen.
I called 96.5 The Point tonight and Mix 95.7...neither one of them have copies yet but said they wanted to add it to their playlists so who knows what will happen there. If you live in this area, these will probably be the stations that will play the songs along with most likely 93.7 and 99.5 in Delaware (you get them if you live in South Jersey) so get calling and requesting  Debbi Calton--bless her heart. The woman ROCKS. I called her one day while driving to PA to work and requested some Fleetwood Mac and we talked for like, 5 minutes. If I have a question, she always answers her e-mails. She's just a very cool lady. Well, I guess when I called her, she/someone liked my voice because they snipped me saying Fleetwood Mac and i'm in some commerical with people saying random band names...lmao... |
This is great. The "Wall Of Sound" version is ten times better than the album one, IMO. I always thought that it sounded single-ish...
|
I think the album version is more progressive sounding, but the WOS version is more "classic Mac" sounding. I've preferred the WOS version since day one... I just can't stand the shaking the faith verse. It sounds like something *I'D* write... and that's not a compliment  .

It wouldn't really make sense for them to play the album version at the AMAs. If the WOS version is the single that was released to radio (the album version was taken right off the album by the stations, it wasn't released as a single), it would only make sense for them to play it. The WOS version will reach a broader audience (i.e. younger music fans), whereas the album version will mostly appeal to an older audience. I prefer the WOS version because Stevie gives a MUCH better performance (day by daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy), Lindsey's backing vocals are his best ever, the beat rocks, and I love the intro. It may be a bit more generic, but I could care less. The album version sucks teabags. Stevie's vocals at the start of the song are just as annoying as her vocals on WISYA and the only thing that stands out is the chorus. The vocals are rather monotone and the ending is anti-climactic. It's as if they didn't know what to do to finish the song. And some of the musical nuances aggravate me intensely. We have to look at it from a business point of view. Then it's easy to see why the WOS version was released! :D |
Wall of Sound?
Pardon my ignorance, but what is Wall of Sound?
|
I believe it was originally used to describe producer Phil Spector's sound in the 60s.
Every sonic space filled with something. Apparently, the Wall of Sound can eventually lead to murder... |
Here's what I don't get. Why are they marketing a version that's not even available?
Carolina Girl, Wall Of Sound refers to a version of Thrown Down that leaked about a year ago. It's is a much more produced version with more drums and vocals that produce a "wall of sound." |

And concerning the audience- I am sure it is exactly the other way round. The so called WOS version ( I don`t see a wall of sound at all- it sounds absolutely normal but that`s a different thing) will appeal to an older audience. It's more conservative and normal sounding (like many other songs) whereas the album version is compared to that more experimental with a certain hard to describe different style. Finally- I like Thrown down (album) O.K. but always thought that something was missing. It still could be improved and a little more powerful, probably with LB`s voice more prominent (like in the WOS version) or something else. But I definitely prefer it over the WOS thing. |
Ah and the backup ladies belong to a Stevie solo album but not on a FM record imo.

Welcome to the Ledge. :D Stefan-- I agree that my main problem with the WOS sound version is that Mindy & Sharon's vocals are WAY too prominent. And compared to the album version, it's way too slow. I like the "peppier" album version, *and* especially the "shaking the faith" verse-- I think it's the core of what Stevie is trying to say with the entire poem. "A decision no one made... and now you're going home." She's telling us a story and if that middle part is missing, it messes with the whole thing-- IMO. |

PS: I hate the girls backup, too! :wavey: |
I agree with Stefan on this. "The Wall Of Sound" is the more commonly acceptable one. There's not that many of Lindsey's quirks on it. When I did hear it at the end of last year, it had me somewhat worried; it sounded way too MOR. Annoying back-up singers and a most typical guitar solo. The only Lindsey solo in the FM catalogue that I could call generic, along with the one in "Isn't It Midnight" (curiously enough, ChiliD has stated that the latter has his favourite Lindsey guitar performance  ).
It is the album version I prefer. The guitars on that one still surprise me after each listen. The whole thing is uplifting, and it can also make one shed some tears. I guess the "WOS" version would be easier to perform live though. I don't mind if I get an officially released version of that one too. The wider public most likely won't be waking up this time around either, no matter which version they decide to put out. :distress: |

Request! Request! Request!
We're the only ones who can get these songs played, so be sure to find your local radio station and request Thrown Down and Steal Your Heart Away!
Request Thrown Down! Request Steal Your Heart Away! (note: not all local stations are listed. if you know your local AC, Hot AC or AAA station, be sure to contact them!). Daniel sln-news.info |
It's always interesting to see how wildly different everyone's opinions are.
I think the album version sounds MUCH fresher than the "work-in-progress" version... which, although I really like it a lot, is pretty standard and by-the-numbers, production-wise. Plus, I feel that Stevie's vocal on the album version is much more interesting than on the "w.i.p." version. By the way... are we sure that's Sharon and/or Mindy providing backing vocals on the early "Thrown Down," and not Sheryl Crow? |
Personally I think the wall of sound version sounds dated and will hit a dead end on radio. Sounds like Tango era Fleetwood Mac.
Thrown Down on the album leaves a lot of space so the vocals are what it is about. A much stronger track. Less is more in this case. |

I just listened to the WOS version for the first time in months.
Even though I have always thought the "faith" verse was crucial, it no longer bothers me to hear the song without it. What does bother me are the backup vocals. They totally BUG. They are dated, cheesy, and sound like they could have been pulled off of any random single from 1988. My kingdom for the ability to pull them off the track. However, the WOS is more satisfying to me because the song actually has a climax ( make of my needs what you will !). The end of the song sends chills up my spine. The harmonies between L and S are bone tingling. Stevie's vocal, except for the first few words, sounds much more urgent and compelling than the album version. I don't think the WOS version actually fits into the SYW sound overall, and I bet that is why they pulled it and redid it. Good for them, as the album version does have more cohesion with the songs around it. Nonetheless, I like having the WOS. Must be that climax thing. |

Thrown Down...???
Hey all,
So... is ANYONE out there hearing Thrown Down (or SYHA, for that matter)??? No one's reporting it, so I assume not. I've been calling & faxing my Hot AC station in Bakersfield, CA ~ KLLY 95.3. Last thing I was told (on Monday night) was that they "are not playing TD yet," but will likely "break it out" on the morning show. To that I asked if it would be within the next week. "Definitely," was the response. Well, so far... nothing. Although I have to say that I am up-to-date on the latest 'happening' pop singles. ;) Train has a great song out, as does John Mayer and Ms. Sheryl Crow.... I am betting (HOPING) that FM will perform Thrown Down on the AMA's this Sunday. Otherwise, there will be no promotion for this single (no video, no Letterman, etc.), and what else can the fans do to get these songs played?? FM *needs* to step up and promote their work. Disappointed, but still got some *hope*.... Josh :wavey: |
If radio stations are playing the WOS version, there HAS to be an "official" release of it.
So, therefore, I would conjecture that the WOS version is one of the extra tracks on the CD single. I think the WOS version is a great mix for broadcast, plus sounds like circa 1979-82 Fleetwood Mac; which would appeal to the casual Fleetwood Mac fan...they would recognize the "Fleetwood Mac sound" and would probably draw their attention if they'd had the radio on as background music while doing housework or some other chore. The album version fits with the flow & feel of the Say You Will album. I like both versions about equally, but I think the WOS version makes for a better "single"...because it stands on its own better than the album version. (Same as with Buckingham Nicks' "Crying In The Night"...the album version flows with the feel of the album, but the single mix...or electric mix, if you prefer...stands on its own and would sound better over the airwaves) |
My local AC station has already started playing Christmas music all the time (beginning November 1), so I definitely won't be hearing Thrown Down from them any time soon!

I prefer the album version of Thrown Down. The extra verse and the sparse arrangement sounds better to my ear. When I heard the WOS version, oh, about a year ago, it sounded OK but closer to mediocre than good. It actually had me worried about the album in general.
What gets played on the radio doesn't really matter. Not to me, anyway. Who cares if they play it? If all of a sudden one of these singles hits it really big, which is highly unlikely, it could extend the tour. And I'd rather see the band quit touring and go back in the studio. Lastly, don't kid yourselves. FM is going to play Peacekeeper at the AMA. It is the only song that has achieved some level of recognition from the album. Transcriptions for it have run in at least two guitar magazines, and the song seems to appeal to listeners. Anyone wanna take a bet on that? Besides, Steal Your Heart Away is better than Thrown Down, anyway. It is also more radio friendly. |

Ha - well, those are all your opinions. I would personally like to hear the new singles on the radio. It makes the band more current, more "NOW." I want to turn the radio on and hear my favorite band. I do believe that was a major wish of Lindsey Buckingham's for this album, to have some relevance and recognition, in spite of being past their 30's... Peacekeeper has received the recognition because it was put out there. As in a single that was played, Today & Tonight Show performances, some support from the record label, *a video*... If Thrown Down was actually supported, and played, it very possibly could have the same success that you mentioned PK having. Remember - to each his own. My opinion is that Thrown Down is much more powerful than SYHA (which I do like and would love to hear on the radio). My favorite version of Thrown Down is the album version. The WOS version is more youthful and vibrant in sound, which I believe would have a better impact on the charts and with new listeners......... We shall see what gets played, and where. Josh |
The lite rock (I know, "ick") station here has a pretty cool DJ. He played Thrown Down for me the day after I sent him an email. He's always cool about that. But, I dunno if it's gonna get much airplay here..............
HomerMcVie, I saw your location. Are you attending IU? I'm a '90 grad. |
Cue Twilight Zone music:eek:
Kathy, I'm a 90 grad! This town's a hard place to leave for many. |
