Stevie on the Madonna/Britney MTV Kiss
This article ran in an Aussie newspaper. You tell 'em Stevie!
Madonna-Britney Kiss Angers Stevie: STEVIE Nicks rates the notorious Madonna-Britney kiss as the most obnoxious television moment ever. "First of all, Madonna is too old to be kissing someone who is 22," the Fleetwood Mac singer told the Herald Sun. "And Britney should be smarter than that. Hopefully, she will figure a way out of this hole she has dug for herself." Original rock chick Nicks, 55, said Spears and Christina Aguilera should wear more clothes and try writing decent songs. "I personally have never been to a strip club, but I turn on MTV and see in every single video what it must be like to be at a strip club," Nicks said. "I think the mystery is gone, and if you have no mystery, then you aren't even sexy. "Real sexuality and sensuality is in the music, and all these girls, vis-a-vis, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and on and on, should go back to writing songs and start over because it won't last and they won't last. "When they are 55, they won't be around and that's sad because I think a lot of those girls are very talented. But they are signing their own death warrants." Nicks was appalled by Madonna's publicity stunt kiss with Spears at the recent MTV Awards. "I thought it was the most obnoxious moment in television history," she said. "Madonna will be fine. Madonna is Madonna. She does what she wants. She will get over this. But will Britney get over it? I don't know." Nicks revealed Madonna asked Jennifer Lopez to be in the smoochy routine, but J.Lo told Madge to kiss something else. Nicks is the ultimate rock survivor, weathering drug addictions, depression and a tumultuous relationship with Lindsey Buckingham. Wow.
Stevie is pulling no punches these days. I'm really surprised by her bluntness here. Not that I have any problem with it. - Jake |
gotta give La Nicks thumbs UP for telling it like it is.
Thank goodness Britney said she'd only kiss Madonna. Our Stevie is safe! |
A friend forwarded this article to me. I was rather surprised she was so vocal about her views on this, but absolutely agreed with everything she said and am thrilled she had the guts to say it! I'm far from being a prude but it seems to me that these days it's all about seeing how far you can push the envelope and not about talent at all.
|
What's Stevie's dog in the race? Why is it worth it for these people to write an article about it? This just strikes me as bizarre.
If Britney doesn't recover, who the hell cares? Her net worth is 50 million bucks.. she'll be juuuuust fine, and girly kisses certainly won't hurt XTina's dirrty image. A very peculiar article. I guess people just love the mudslinging.. hope it doesn't come back on her. I'd hate for Madonna, Britney, or Xtina to get pissed and start badmouthing Stevie. |
I think Stevie was being mostly humorous in this. I can see her laughing while she is saying it. Remember, humor sometimes does not translate into prose. Also, Stevie made similar comments a year or so ago about the sexiness is okay, but you better write if you want to be in it for the long haul.
|
Wise advice from a wise woman.
|
Yeah Britney may have 50 million bucks...but Stevie's standpoint is from a time when it WAS about the music...not all the glitz and all that...and Stevie is right...these girls ARE digging themselves a hole....everyone loves it now, but they will not soon or later...and you might say that doesn't matter b/c their rich....but correct me if I'm wrong these girls DO want to be around for awhile...and their image is already getting old to me....and the way Britney spends money, she will NEED a career....I thought it was cool Stevie was so blunt...Why was the article printed?
Well journalists like you said like to get things stirred up...and offer a different opinion than those force fed into people from certain places (ala MTV)...Journalists have been asking MANY celebs about their opinions on this kiss, there was a section in Rolling Stone about it with quotes Chris |
Madonna and Britney could bad mouth Stevie all they wanted...Stevie has staying power, it won't hurt her at all....
Chris |
Personally, I am more intrigued by her comments about madonna being too old to kiss Britney. What's that about? Does she really feel that way about all relationships with large age differences of say, about 20 years or so?
Hmmmmm...... now I wonder what it is she really disapproving of here? I think somebody (who we know reads all FM-related press) is going to read this and take it a bit personally. I smell a fight a-brewing and a few frosty shows on the horizon! Also, I guess this means Stevie won't be getting herself some fine little chiseled boy-toy anytime soon, huh? Shoot. I think she should. -Sharon |
Yeah I could definitely see this turning a little bit nasty, but let's hope it doesn't come to that. I find her making mention of Britney's age to be interesting. So Stevie, if Madonna kissed a lady that was 42 instead of 22, would that make a difference?
I think Stevie has always been opinionated about things, and we all know she is a lot more conservative that she used to be. While I completely agree with her that the kiss was an obnoxious publicity stunt, I hope that Stevie's words don't "ruffle feathers" with too many in the music industry, so to speak. I have a feeling it will be okay -- many have spoken out against Madonna's "display." I saw Madonna on Oprah the other day and she made it seem like Britney was the one who kissed her that way. Britney did slip her the tongue, Madonna said she intended it to be a chaste kiss, like the one she gave Christina, as part of the "mock wedding ceremony" during their performance. |
Meeeowww! Did Stevie skip a hormone pill that day or what? But she does have a point - I also hope that her words don't come back to bite her in the arse.
And yes, Stevie SHOULD have a boy-toy!! |
Maybe I'm not on the same wavelength with everyone else, but who cares if they kiss? Why should it be such a controversy in this day and age? We all applaud everytime Stevie and Lindsey hug--let alone if they kiss--and THAT's ok. It says a lot about human rights and the state of tolerance in our society that such a big deal is made of two PEOPLE kissing.

Well, I think Stevie is speaking from a POV that is saying people shouldn't do it (kiss, or anything else) if it's only for display or for titillation..... only if there is true emotion behind it. I certainly don't think it a same-sex issue or anything like that.

I think what Stevie meant by the age had nothing to do with age differences in relationships, but in the fact that Madonna, a well-established artist of about the same age/generation of Stevie, would be getting herself involved in this thing with someone who is younger and might not be around for much longer (as Stevie alluded to). Like she shouldn't HAVE to be participating in this kind-of publicity thing.

Well, I don't think Stevie is the only "star" shocked by this kiss.
Did you see the TV shot of Justin Timberlake? Of course, he looked anything but pleased. However, in that same shot, you can see Mary J. Blige in the background with this look of horror on her face . . . . |
I just don't see why she cares, but ohhhkay. Hopefully she wasn't seriously trying to take a stab at the dipqueens of pop.
They may be digging themselves into a hole, but honestly, with 50 million bucks set aside, does it really matter? The names "Britney Spears" and "Christina Aguilera" are industries in and of themselves, regardless of the music. They make more money from merchandising than they do their music that should be soooo important. And in 20 years? I'd be willing to bet that people will still remember "that girl who wore that school girl outfit and danced with snakes.. you know, the hit me one more time or whatever girl.. who was that? Oh yeah, Britney Spears." and.. "the dirty one.. the one that looked like she needed to take a shower.. who was that? Oh yeah, Christina Aguilera." We may only remember them out of dislike, but now, there's a shock element to remember them with.. doesn't sound like hole digging to me- especially if Madonna is involved. Even if Christina and Britney ARE forgotten, Madonna won't be, and neither will that moment. They went for shock and attention.. hey guess what.. they got it. Even Stevie is giving it to them. The industry is different now, Stevie- realize this. And after you realize it? Make a frigging music video. You can do it. |
Good for Stevie! I totally agree with what she said.
I mean, think about it. In 50 years are we going to think of Britney Spears the same way we think of Stevie? |
The whole issue is weird. I guess my question is why would anyone ask Stevie Nicks what she thought of it at all? Who cares.
|
Remember folks, we're talking about "talent" from a young woman who sings songs like "Oops, I did it again". Where is the songwriting talent?? NIL!
Meanwhile we have Stevie, cranking out amazing poetic songs like Smile At You, Destiny Rules, Running Thru The Garden. I know where my fan $$'s go... towards REAL songwriters! a'la Nicks / Buckingham! |

And I know she didn't say they wouldn't be remembered.. but I'm saying they didn't RUIN themselves. And yeah, Tango.. why DID they ask Stevie what she thought? I'm sure to start a little mudsling. |

Who are we kidding?
The ONLY reason, IMO, that the press asks celebs what they think of others is to START STUFF, to STIR THE POT, to CAUSE TROUBLE...because we all know, we don't watch TV, read newspapers, etc. for nicey-nice stuff.
The press has that sinister undercurrent underneath it, while all the while, trying to look like they care and are there to give us the news with objectivity. |
Well, I just got home from the gym where for some strange reason I thought about this on the StairMaster  In the beginning, Stevie wore very skimpy/loe cut/filmy outfits. Granted, they were not as outlandish as today's stuff, but they were pretty much the riske stuff of that time. Moreover, the bottom line is like the women today, Stevie used sex to sell her records. I agree it may have not been as extreme as it is today, but the principal is the same. Stevie did and does have talent, but so do some of the young girls out there today although it may not be to our or my liking. I mean when you think about it they all use sex to sell to varying degrees - it is just human nature.

The following is something that was written on a board I was browsing on the Madonna/Brittany subject:
"I love you Stevie, but you should have taken your advice that you gave to Natalie Maines and kept your mouth shut if you want people to buy your records. Remember that line ??" Does anyone know what article this is from or what interview? I tend to not believe that Stevie said the J.Lo line, it sounds out of character and just sort of thrown in to add some fluff. Ive never read a comment of hers being that off the wall. But I was taken a back by the comment above in regards to Stevie being a hypocrit for using drugs etc and not being perfect herself---because Stevie has never sold anything using sex appeal and she surely hasnt used shock value to reinvent herself or sell records and thats what Stevie was refering to in the article. She didnt use drugs to portray an image that would help sell herself or records. |

Stevie hauled out in very carefully planned and very low cut outfits made of very sexy black chiffon (an odd if not shocking sight) that revealed her surgically enhanced breasts and was coked up out of her head until 1985 but gave spectacular performaces which set a standard she is still judged by today as much as 30 years later. Granted, she is not coked up anymore, but she is still trying (successfully in my opinion) to be sexy by exposing a leg every now and then and also hauling her boobs higher to heaven during Rhiannon. I am pretty sure she is doing this for sex appeal on her own terms because she has been doing this all along. I say more more power to her, but at the same time I think it is a little hypocritical to criticize someone else for doing basically the same thing and a thing that was not really done at all in her day. Thus, my point, it is all about degrees of severity. |

As for Christina, girlfriend can sing. It's excellent advice for her to write her own songs. There will come a time when she won't be able to run around almost naked anymore. Then what? I notice Madonna wears far more clothing than she used to. Don't even bring up Cher's body or I'll tell the goatee joke. ;) Has anyone else noticed that Stevie seems to be far more forthcoming in the foreign press? JMO.:) |

I wonder why Stevie makes comments like that. Why should she care who's kissing who, about an age difference and whether Britney and XXXtina will be around when they're 55???? I don't get it. Britney has zero talent and XXXtina.... well, she can sing, that's for sure and maybe it is good advice to write her own songs but I don't think she will take that advice and she didn't ask for it (as far as I know).
Like someone else said, times have changed and Stevie herself was pretty sexy when she was younger. In the 80's she showed so much cleavage, her boobs nearly fell out. I do agree with her on one thing though: when you watch MTV, you might as well go to stripclub. It's all about sex, the less clothes you wear, the more money you make. That's the way it is these days. I don't think she's oppossed to two women kissing though, she just thinks Madonna is too old to kiss Britney. I know I'll be probably be banned for life for saying this but maybe Stevie wanted to be kissed by Madonna since they're in the same age group.....;) JMHO Debbie |

Also, I have never seen a picture of Stevie, with her "boobs nearly falling out", any pictures anywhere? ;) |
Wow..i was totally surprised when i read this, not cause i disagree..but Stevie usually keeps quiet about stuff like this...I agree mostly with what she is saying..i loathe Britney...but i do like Xtina..she can sing like a mofo...i don't hold her in the same regard as Stevie..but i definitly listen to her music.Anyway..Go Stevie;)

about her - chemically enhanced moments excepted. On the flip side, Britney, Christina, and even Madonna have all pranced around looking like 20 dollar whores. More power to them, I guess. The problem for the youngsters is they haven't proven they have any real talent or staying power. Three or four years of success in the music business is pretty paltry. Maybe they will last, maybe they won't. One thing is certain - people will not always want to see them wearing next to nothing. And once the record sales drop, the top writers will not be offering them the songs they can't have careers without. For crying out loud, the new Rolling Stone has Britney practically naked on the cover. I suppose the next step is a full on gynecoligical spread in Hustler. Wouldn't surprise me. I am sure half the straight men in America bought the RS magazine. I tossed it out of the house the day I got it. Now if George Clooney were on the cover almost naked, then I might have kept it. We all have our double standards ! ;) I am glad Stevie said something. She might get a little mud slung at her, but she has the right to an opinion. In addition, she has been there. She can take care of herself. I don't really care about the kiss, but I am totally with her on the rest of it. |

Stevie was and still is a beautiful woman. If she would have worn jeans and a t-shirt, she would still have been considered sexy. As low-cut as some of her outfits were in the early days, she was never trashy. And Cher, despite the super wild outfits she wore (and still does) was never vulgar. Christina, Britney, and Madonna live in the world of trashy and often vulgar. The three of them seem to be in a contest to see which one can look most like your average streetwalker.
