Actual reels for sale on eBay

http://cgi.aol.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI...&category=1602

There is a lot of two reels for $400, a complete rip-off. Someone would have to be out of their mind to spend all that money for them! However, I hope a true fan buys them and refuses to trade them...

Anyone know why traders are being stingy with them? No one will trade them anymore, which is a damn shame. :distress:

GardenStateGirlie 09-14-2003 01:16 PM

You know, I often wonder, who is selling these things and who in the hell buys them for this kind of money?

I always find it ironic that "the powers that be," sit on this stuff... presumably thinking that no one would be interested.
Meanwhile, some fans are paying hundreds of dollars to get their hands on this material.

They could easily release a three or four disc boxed-set of the best of Stevie's demos and outtakes, and we'd all come running.

It would go gold in a week! :D

Could you imagine if that ever happened?! Imagine if she used demos that have never been heard before! Edge of 17, Blue Denim, Long Way To Go, Stand Back, Night Hawk, Everybody Finds Out, Illume, Silver Girl, Listen to the Rain, Alice, HAEWAFY; I would wet myself if we got to hear those demos!!!

Yes that's an insane amount of money, especially for reels that are already circulating...

As for your question, that does seem to be a trend amongst several traders (elitism ? ) but not all of them, far from it.

Don't feel too bad... I'm not even a member of that particular "in" group! :distress:
In all honesty, I'm not even sure who is... just that "they're" out there.

Truly though, Stevie does have some of the most generous fans in existence, and the amount of excellent-quality bootlegs that are circulating, is amazing.

I've often wondered about that. I don't follow any other bands like this, so I don't really know, but do other bands have this much unreleased studio material floating around? I realize the Dead are probably the kings of concert bootlegs. And I suppose The Beatles have a lot of studio stuff floating around...but I know I've got an awful lot of unreleased songs (especially Stevie), let alone alternate versions or takes of released songs, is this par for the course?

I've noticed that as of late, almost *all* of the traders that had the masters for trade took them off of their lists or put a note next to them saying that they weren't for trade. I find it quite rude that others get masters/boots and sit on them like they own 'em. Case in point, the wall-of-sound version of Thrown Down. People thought that they were entitled to it more than everyone else and only a select few got copies of it. It was forwarded to a few people with a disclaimer saying not to give it to anyone else because it would "spoil a good thing." Baloney! One particular fan doesn't deserve to hear it more than another! So, when it was sent to me a few days after it was leaked to a select few, I logged onto WinMX and shared it with whoever wanted it. If those stingy asses didn't like it, tough tacos, IMO.

So, when I finally get a copy of Black Velvet, I'll sit on it and wave it in front of the folks with the new master reels who feel they're too above us to share.

After all, if it wasn't for the generosity of the FM/SN traders out there, these stingy folks wouldn't have half of the stuff they have or any of the master reels.

Johnny Stew 09-14-2003 08:56 PM

Some groups... for example the Beatles, and the Grateful Dead... have a lot of material circulating within their fan communities.

But it's nearly impossible to get your hands on material by many other artists.

I know I tried for AGES to find a Heart fan who had some of the stuff I was looking for (though I eventually found someone who very generously helped me fill in some blanks in my collection).

And Madonna fans seem to hold on tightly to what they have. Or they're only willing to sell it to you for a high-price.

It's not like the Mac fan community, where it's *very* easy to find someone reliable who's willing to trade with you.
(I sent a couple CDs worth of rare Stevie stuff to someone last fall, who was supposed to send me a couple of CDs of Madonna stuff, in turn. A year later, and he never sent the CDs.) :distress:

Oh well!

Hmmm...Interesting...

Being that I collect both Stevie/F.Mac & Beatles music I can honestly say that I never had a problem trading within the Beatles community whereas the same cannot be said of the Stevie/F.Mac community...

The Beatles collectors overall are more generous than any other traders I have dealt with whereas some Stevie/F.Mac traders just take it WAY TO SERIOUSLY!!!

If a new Beatles collector was to offer stuff for cash they would learn real fast that is the one way to be left "blacklisted" by the rest of the community...Then when the new stuff is traded within the community they are left out PERMANENTLY!!!

Btw, That Stevie reel seems to have some song/studio takes on it that were in circulation online very recently from the time period of January '80.

I've really only engaged in relatively few trades, and luckily all but two of the people that I've dealt with, have been very generous, helpful, and great to deal with.

I haven't really had any experience with Beatles fans, trading-wise, but compared to other fan-bases that I've dealt with, the Mac/Stevie people have been absolutely terrific.

I imagine though, that if I traded on a bigger scale, that I'd probably run into more jerks. But that seems to be true of just about everything in life. :(

Trust me, The Beatles collector's are super loyal & generous...And there is no "secret online group" (Which some people have "assumed" I am a part of...Sorry folks, I am a "lone wolf" I work by myself trading wise) stuff within the Beatles' rank of traders/collectors...

I havent ran into many jerks myself even though I trade on a larger scale than most people online. 90% of the traders I have dealt with are just really honest fans who believe music is meant to be shared with everyone and not to be kept to one self (ie-the 9/24/02 Paul McCartney Chicago show which is HELLA-HARD to find as a 2 cd version, Which I have traded to several Beatles collector's recently)

I try to be generous because when I started trading I had to spend $ to get a small collection started because I had nothing to offer in return for a trade...But now that my collection is quite large I won't spend $ or accept $ for the music I have...Hell, I traded for all the 2003 SYW shows I have listed on my trade website and a small minority of the great shows came from traders outside the usual F.Mac/S.Nicks trading circles.

I agree! There are some FM/SN traders who take it *way* too seriously. Some of their rules are absolutely daunting and really take away from the fun in trading. Don't do this, don't do that; who cares? As long as I get the boot(s) and it sounds as promised, I'm good to go.

Hopefully it's a fan who will be thoughtful enought to trade them instead of hoarding them like greedy, elitist asses who think they deserve them more than anyone else. ;)

Well to be fair, I think most of the rules are for the benefit of the entire trading community. For example, it can't hurt to remind people again and again that burning live shows with gaps is a no-go. By being demanding, traders do maintain the overall quality of bootlegs. After all what you trade for today is what you'll be trading with tomorrow. :)

And no I don't have a trade page (well not yet) :)

Every trader has those rules, I'm only referring to the really anal traders. The ones who DEMAND that you replace their discs if there is even one fingerprint. The ones who require priority mail (I'm not a bank, folks!). I'll send priority mail if I feel like it and I like the trader, not if someone requires me to do so. I will not replace a disc because it has a fingerprint on it; if that results in me being branded as a bad trader, so be it.

I'm talking about the ones who make it a requirement that you send first and don't send out your discs until two weeks after they receive theirs. People take trading too seriously, as if it is a divine thing. It's not. It's fans sharing music with each other for the benefit of hearing good music that they normally wouldn't be able to hear.

And I know I referred to it in my previous posts, but the ones who love to trade and expand their collections, but only with "certain" stuff. The way that some asshole traders sit on the masters like they own them. It makes me sick and I will not do any trading with "traders" like that. After everyone expanded their collections, they have the nerve to act like they own the masters? Screw them.

I don't belong to the 'Chain' list, so I'm not sure if someone is selling them there, or not. I hope not, as no one should be making a profit off of these. Unless they're just charging for the cost of a blank CD and shipping... which is fair enough.

And no one here is wanting a "free-ride" really... simply a chance to have the same songs in their collection that other fans have, either by 1:1 trades, or 2:1 trades.

that is one thing that surprises me about people doing transfers of reels by any artist/group/etc is how a studio owner can look the other way...When the $$$$ start talkin'

Most of the studios I know "personally" will not allow someone to use their facilities to do digital transfer from analog sourced tape of copyrighted material...

That is a BIG "No-No" in the eyes of studios & their owners and is frowned on by the RIAA...(Btw, just about ANYTHING that involves music is frowned upon by those RIAA putz'!!!)

Its not wrong for the person who owns the reels and takes them to a studio and pays 1000s of bucks to want a little money in return..thats not easy work people ! so why should they pay all this money and then turn around and just give out? Should he/she go poor just to make some one happy? Then I guess there has been a great lack of communication within the trading community about the reels as these have been circulating freely so far. Sorry but it's anyone's guess how these things surface in the first place unless people are TOLD about it, and displaying these among trade pages with other boots if you do not want to "give them away" is not the way to go IMO. Especially when your trading rules clearly dictate you won't sell anything...

I perfectly understand how costly this can be to the devoted fan who's paying for this material to see the light of day. I am certain there are quite a few people who would glady help if only they were told where to turn their contributions. And I'm not talking about helping some freeloader increase their monthly income by selling copies of something they got for free...

estranged4life 09-16-2003 01:48 PM

Personally...

I enjoy the live Fleetwood Mac 2003 shows moreso than the "master reels"...The current crop of live shows seem to be the best sounding of the FM/SN shows to appear yet.

So even though I see both sides of the "master reels" (The Stevie/F.Mac & The Beatles communities have different views on "reels"...What works in one community wont work in the other & vice-versa.) I have basically decided to focus ONLY the live music of Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks!

In all honesty, I don't think I'm owed anything.
I've been a die-hard fan & collector since late 1985/1986, and I probably have a smaller collection than half the people here. But hey, it's not the size that counts. ;)
Everything in that collection means something to me... either because of the music contained, or the generosity of the people who sent it to me.

And I completely understand that someone has to pay to get these masters, and then pay to have them transfered to a digital source. I'd never expect that person to then send them to me for free.
My recent comment was in regards to the folks who get them later, and then try to sell them to other fans. No one should make money off of Stevie's music, other than Stevie herself. That's all I was trying to say. :)

And my initial comment was in regards to those who say, "oh yeah, I have ______... it's fantastic! I listen to it all the time! But I won't trade it with anyone."

To the "have nots," that feels like you're rubbing it in their faces.

Luckily most fans are not like that. And, again, I haven't personally run into anyone like that (just two people who turned out to be very unreliable)... but I've been told by some friends about a couple of fans who are like that.
It's "second hand news," of course, but I trust the sources.

Thankfully, so many people in the fan community (including several who post here, and those who run some of my favorite sites) are outstanding folks, and are generous above & beyond the call of duty. :D

dissention 09-16-2003 02:52 PM

No one should profit from bootlegs. It's wrong, but I've seen it happen even on these boards. However, it's fans that believe in buying bootlegs that perpetuate that kind of bull****. No true fan would sell bootlegs for profit.

Also, if someone has enough dough and resources at their disposal to buy/receive the master reels at Modern Records, who is to say that they don't have access to a studio that will transfer them for free or a nominal amount of money? We don't know, therefore we cannot comment.

But, if the person who had them transferred traded them to someone, should the trader who received them be able to sell them?! I think not.

I agree with the statement that people shouldnt make money off of something that they received in a trade for nothing more than a cd...

I never have and never will make $$$$ off trading (Even though I have a ton of the Beatles music that can fetch more $$$$ than almost 99% of my Stevie/F.Mac music!!!!), Matter of fact I take a loss on trading but money doesn't mean much to me as much music does...I enjoy music more than ANYTHING!!!!

But I have HAD people pull the ol' "I have something you dont dont have...Nah, Nah, Nah-nah Nah" BS on me...Must've felt bad when I ended up with "that concert" (Paul McCartney-9/24/02 Chicago, IL-ALD Recording, The only "professionally" recorded show from the second leg of the US tour) a couple days later and sent that person an email tellin' 'em to F.O.A.D.!!!!

I'm new to trading (thanks to Brian and his generosity!) and am just building my collection and whatnot...and I think if I had not come across such a large trading network I would have purchased a few things to get myself going. I don't agree with it though, which makes me a bit of hypocrite, but I guess if you want something---you'll get it however you can.

As for these tapes---had I had the cash, I would've bought them, had someone transfer them for me, then returned the tapes to Stevie herself. How I would've done the returning is beyond me, but I would've figured it out somehow.

I'm not going to name people, but many in the trading community have been alienated recently over this elitist attitude that has come up over the masters. If they want to say something, so be it. If they don't feel like speaking up like I am, so be it.

I got a bunch of the newly released masters about two-three weeks ago from a trading buddy. Then someone in the elitist group of Stevie fans found out and sent me a ridiculous email, telling me that I had better not trade the masters or else I'd face repurcussions. Incredibly ridiculous, but these ridiculous behaviors have been confirmed by other traders I've spoken to as widespread. The policy with many traders now is that you better not trade the masters that only the select few should have the privilege to listen to, or you will be blackballed as a bad trader.

Stevie knows about it because the person that got ahold of the masters offered them back to her. :) She said she had her own copies and to keep them.

However, she didn't know that her fans would turn nasty over them and sell them for exorbitant amounts on eBay. ;)

I wonder if Stevie would, in the future of course, pull a "Beatles-esqe" situation and release the masters she has in the "vault" like the Beatles did to curtail the bootleg sales of their master reels/sessions/outtakes/etc. with the official "Anthology" releases???

Now, I'm not saying that all traders are being selfish over the masters, just a select bunch. Lord knows, Sara (SN Underground) was one of the first to bring all of us the old masters, which I'm sure we are all grateful for. Some have posted the masters on their websites for us to download. But now, some of them are refusing to spread the masters and are being quite childish about it. What is the point of sending people warning emails over bootlegs? If someone can explain, I'll seriously listen. :)

More reels up on auction by I think the same seller (who, btw, I feel is a total witch, Ive dealt with her before... but that's my mere personal opinion).

I'd advise anyone who is planning on bidding to check out her feedback. I wouldn't run the risk of paying over $500 for an item and receiving it, but that's just me. I wouldn't bid!

The seller sold me an item costing me almost $200 which she didnt send me for THREE months... and then also failed to send along part of the item, which I had to fight tooth & nail to finally get. While she did eventually send me everything... it was a long and trying transaction that should have been effortless... esp when she was hounding me for the $ for the mere 24 hours she waitied to be paid.
