What song got you hooked on Stevie/FM?
 

Okay, the reason I ask is because I am trying to get someone hooked on Stevie Nicks. I am only in High School and needless to say, most people don't even know who Stevie Nicks is. The response I get is, "who's he?" which I'm sure is common among a lot of young people. I feel fortunate enough to have found Stevie and Fleetwood Mac even though I wasn't born until the late 80's. Anyway, back on topic.... Even though I own all their cds and have been to their shows, I have no one to talk to about FM! One of my best friends says she is willing to give them a listen. So, what cds should I let her listen to?

It has to be something catchy and that you will enjoy on your first listen or else I'm sure she won't like it. What album would you suggest from FM and what solo album from Stevie?

I really want to convert some people to "Macism" and let them know Backstreet Boys are not the only band out there.

I resently got a girl hooked on Stevie at work. I think she's about 22 or so. She's your typical club goer, likes all the hip hop, not a Rock music fan for the most part, except she likes the 80's stuff. She was downloading songs for me and making cd's for me before I had a burner and whilst doing so, fell in love with Beautiful Child. She said she put it on everynight when she would lay down to go to sleep. I offered to make her a cd of Stevie music, cause she loves her voice, so I made her a cd of all the mellow stuff of hers like Storms, Sara, Goodbye Baby, HAEWAFY, Second Time, Landslide...etc. She wanted piecefull... So that's what I did.

I think she's a fan now, and she's told me, some of her friends like it too.

I was pretty happy about that. Felt like I did my good deed for the year with that one.

I also told her alot of background stuff regarding Stevie and the music and Fleetwood Mac in general. Made her very aware that her music is all about her life and experiences. I think this helps a listener grasp what the heck is going on.

For the Mac, I'd definitely go with the "Very Best of Fleetwood Mac" set that came out last October. It has all the hits, a few obscure tracks (my all-time favorite Storms!), and a couple live cuts. Or you could go with The Dance; that's a fab introduction, too.

For Stevie, go with Bella Donna or Trouble In Shangri-La. The thing with Stevie solo is that a lot of it isn't for the masses; it's an acquired taste. While the fans may love the Other Side of the Mirror album (it's my favorite), a lot of people that aren't fans might hear a song like Doing the Best I Can or Ghosts and be like "What the hell is this?!" Or they might hear Beauty and the Beast and think "Ugh." Bella Donna has Edge, Leather and Lace, Stop Draggin', Outside the Rain, and a bunch of other fabulous songs that will hook you on first listen. TISL is more "modern" sounding, so that might catch a person right away. Planets, Sorcerer, Fall From Grace, and the title cut just leap out.

If you want to introduce Lindsey to the mix, go with Out of the Cradle. I think the reason for this is self-explanatory. :laugh:

As for the songs got me hooked on Fleetwood Mac/Stevie, they were Gypsy and Beautiful Child. :D

I think the Dance sounds like a good idea. That is what got me hooked. Silver Springs and Everywhere for the most part. Trouble in Shangrila sounds like a good idea too. And you are right about Doing the Best I can, as I myself can't find anything special about that song. Although Beauty and Beast is one my all time favorites! But that is def. not the song to try and hook someone on.

I would recommend making "potential converts" listen to The Dance, and if possible, have them watch the video. Silver Springs is what hooked me. I'm 22 and I was 16, a junior in high school at the time. I don't think I was the only one either, because I have met quite a few people my age that fell in love with the Mac at the same time.

I also definitely agree that a lot of the Stevie solo stuff is an aquired taste. For example, my favorite album of hers is Rock A Little (I know, weird), but most people upon first listen would think it was an 80s disaster. So if you're trying to hook them on Stevie, I would start with the FMAC and then point them in the direction of Belladonna (it's definitely the classic Stevie record) and TISL.

This may seem silly, but I think it helps to tell a few Stevie/Lindsey/Fleetwood Mac stories...the drama and relationships of the group definitely add to the music and give it greater meaning...a combination of endless playing of Stevie songs and telling stories of the Mac and its members finally converted my freshman roommate. One day it finally clicked, she now worships Stevie!

'Twas Lindsey who got me hooked on FM. I was watching National Lampoons Vacation one day...heard the familiar tunes and that was that....I was hooked on Mr. Buckingham and that led me to FM...and then Stevie solo.

I agree that Belladonna is a good place to start, it's got that great late 70's, California, country-ish sound to it, plus who DOESN'T love Edge of 17?

OOTC seems to be the "safe bet" for getting people to listen to Lindsey's solo. It is perfection. :nod: I've never heard anything bad said about OOTC, and I'd better NOT EVER!! :mad: :laugh:

Ooh..no that's not silly at all!! I think part of the intrigue of this band and Stevie is all of the drama behind the music...the people I've gotten hooked just ate it all up...I once talked myself hoarse about this band lol...and I thought I'd bored the person to death, but they swear to this day they were very fascinated..and want to know more..yea!!!!

Anyway...the Dance is a good starter, I think...it's what hooked a lot of people...including me...but the song that did it for me was Rhiannon...from the Dance...though most of the people I've had listen to The Dance really took to Everywhere and Silver Springs :D

I agree with David's logic.
The songs can stand on their own - and Very Best Of would be a good album choice - but videos that show Stevie are the way to go, IMO. Not just concert videos, but music videos. They sure got me hooked as an adolescent.
And Stevie's early solo singles (Stand Back, Edge of Seventeen, Stop Dragging My Heart Around, Leather and Lace, Talk to Me, Nightbird, After the Glitter Fades, Rooms on Fire, I Can't Wait) are very catchy, even if 1989's Doing the Best that I Can is for the true fan.
I think catchy Mac songs are Rhiannon, Second Hand News, Gold Dust Woman, Tusk, Little Lies, Sara, Landslide, Hold Me, Go Your Own Way, Dreams (all on Very Best Of). Also, Blue Letter, Crystal, and Eyes of the World are good choices.

The Dance seems to get everyone hooked. I'd go with that. I was drawn in by Landslide at the young age of seven. And then Say You Love Me. I have one friend who kinda likes FM, but not as much as I do. It drives me crazy when I want to talk about The Mac and have noone to talk about them with! Arrgh, but, I have online FM friends, so that's good :-D.

Be patient. I predict that in fifty years we'll all be in the same retirement village or old age home, doing low-impact water aerobics to the Mirage album, playing bingo under the good lighting that life is all about, and caravanning to concerts to see the latest edition of the Mac (Jessica Nicks on vocals, Leelee Buckingham on guitar, Molly McVie on bass) with our Fan Club Senior Discount Passes in hand. Time to take a break from crafting macrame headresses and crocheting shawls for the local Talent Show! Anybody up for shuffleboard in the Emmiline Lounge?

I agree that The Dance is a good place to start...It was responsible for bringing in a new crop of fans and it also served as a 'wake up' for the 'older' fans that Fleetwood Mac were STILL here and better than ever.

Drawing from my experience, I was probably close to being a freshman in High School when I really became a fan of Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac. I watched a Stevie Nicks concert on cable TV...it was from the Bella Donna Tour (I know there's a video/DVD out there and forgive my ignorance but I forget what it's called...my brother 'borrowed' my copy 7 years ago and I haven't had it since :laugh: )

The concert started off with Gold Dust Woman...and Stevie 'floated' out all bathed in soft light...in a beautiful midnight blue shawl....looking like an apparition...and from there it went into Gold and Braid...which was the first time I had heard this rare track...and it's one of my favorites to this day....and Stevie was dancing and smiling throughout this song and having such a ball...and looked so beautiful.....other songs in this include...Dreams, Sara, Rhiannon (for the encore) Edge of 17, Stop Draggin' My Heart Around...Outside The Rain...After seeing this I wanted to BE Stevie Nicks...:D

After that I went into Rumours and followed the whole 'soap opera' and 'drama' that went into recording that album....the music is SO intense on this album...It's facinating to hear such amazing art come from such heartache....

I'd also try to go by the type of music your friend already listens to. And also, if you can, try to see of you can find some of the older stuff and the other members (besides Stevie) solo work. For instance, my one friend likes blues and r&b, so I played her alot of the early stuff, like some Chicken Shack, my Legendary Christine Perfect album bootlegs, and stuff like Hypnotized. My one friend likes metal, and all the screamo stuff, so I've been thinking of playing Come and Murrow for her, 'cuz that's sort of around the metal genre. None are converts yet, but I'm trying. If you want, I can send you some of those boots I was talking about, PM me and I'll send them!

It's nice to hear that your friend has an open mind about listening to your favorite group. I understand what it's like to be a fan of music which is not so popular amung your age group. I think we're both 15 right?

Anyways...my four favorite bands are ABBA, Supertramp, Fleetwood Mac, and Our Lady Peace. At least OLP is somewhat respected if not loved by most of my friends.

I've learned that if they're not into your music, you're probably not going to convince them.

I think you should sit them down, make them listen to Rumours strait through, then listen to Silver Springs(see if they don't cry...I almost did the first time I heard it) and Sara. If they don't like it by then, they're nuts! LOL!

If they're at that point a little interested, explain a bit of the FM history. Maybe show them the lyric interpretations page. Fleetwood Mac is legendary. Trying to convert someone can be tricky. However I converted a co worker whoe became my girlfriend into a full fledged fan of the mac and their solo efforts. She initally took to Free Fallin , Touced By An Angel and Everyday. I then got her The Dance on vhs to experience Stevie with FM . She cried during Silver Springs (who Hasn't) and is always asking me stuff about the albums. She has stared to get into the older stuff with PG and compnay. Loves OH Well (who doesn't)

It sounds strange, but the song that hooked me was "Never Going Back Again." Just that guitar...that melody. Who are these guys??...I want more! Then, the song that got me "further" hooked was "You Make Loving Fun." (I loved and still love Christine and her music to death.) It was later that I found out that was the band on the radio constantly with Landslide and Silver Springs. When I found out they did Rhiannon too I knew this was the band for me, and they're getting even better as I get into the pre-BN stuff.

(Luckily, I do have one very good Fleetwood Mac friend at school. We had never even talked until I heard her singing Gypsy. We've been friends ever since, and I'll never forget those English classes singing like Stevie and drawing comics of the band-members' back stage antics. Oh...those were the days.) :laugh:

The Dance would be my pick for your friend to listen to. It hooked a lot of new fans back in '97 and re-hooked quite a few old ones too.

Hearing "Over My Head" on the radio introduced me to Fleetwood Mac, but it was "Rhiannon" that hooked me.

"Silver Springs" from The Dance. Sent shivers up my spine then and still does to this day. After witnessing that performance I was hooked and spent many an hour afterwards surfing the net for as much information on Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks as I could find~!

I got hooked on stevie, and then FM very quickly...within a week!

It was a combination of a few things....i liked the mysticism, the unknown about stevie..her uniqueness...THAT VOICE FOR ONE!!!!!

Then i bought TiSl...and i heard the title track and i got a rush of shivers all over me..i had to sit down and just listen..

Then the rest is well, history for me! lol I love her fun Stand back and "The Nightmare" - especially that first high vocal line "with the "I-IVORY MORNIN"

I love everything she does now! Even " I can't wait", which i think isnt taccy at all, yes she did use alot of synths on the RAL album, but hey it was the 80s!!!!!

Hearing Gold Dust Woman and The Chain back to back on the radio when I was 11 hooked me... and I've been obsessed ever since that day... :laugh: .

The Chain from The Dance was the song that hooked me. That and Tusk. I was actually suprised how much I liked the original versions of the songs even more than on The Dance, once I heard them!
