Silver Springs - Live or Studio?
 

Which to you guys prefer. I THINK I like the live version better. This is rare for me...I really hate live versions of anything. But the guitar solo (IMHO) is better in the live version. Also the live version (which I heard first...it's the version that made me fall in love with the song...maybe I'm biased) is a little slower which seems to go with the feel of the song.

The studio version is still cool. It should have been on Rumours. What do you all think?

Because I heard the original one first that is the one I must say is my favorite. Back in 1987, I had my favorite radio station find the B-side and play it for me and the DJ had never heard it before and thanked me for bringing it to his attention. :)

If you just take into consideration the vocals - I like the studio version better. The version on the Best of FM that is remastered is so awesome - the passion in Stevie's voice is so unbelieveable at the end of the song. The forcefulness in her voice is unlike any other song, in my opinion.

However, the video performance from The Dance is so awesome that it gives me chills to this day. The vocal reminds me of the video (which I love), but apart from that, it is just OK.

The live Silver Springs version from The Dance. It's as if she's saying to everyone "You'll never get away"- from me. It's one of her finest moments, IMO.

I bought the go your own way-single early 78, because there was an outtake on it, they said.... I was amazed, it got me by the throat immediately. So I'll go for the original. Still think the liveversion is too slow, although I agree with the better solo and of course, the absolute briljant ending, when stevie is screaming her heart out facing "the subject" of the song....;)

The studio version....(which was the first one I heard) completely blew me away....Stevie's vocal conveyed such beauty and vunerability....and a bit of sadness and it really reflected what she was going through at the time...so on an emtional level...it really does 'tug at you' a bit....especially the "Did you say she was pretty?"..."Did you say that she loved you?"..."Baby I don't wanna know...." I wept the first time I ever heard that sadness in her voice...

The live version, now that Stevie is older, it STILL conveys the sadness and the wistfullness...but NOW there IS an edge to Silver Spring...as if she is saying...."How dare you do this to me!" IMO, there is a slight, very slight hint of anger to the ending of the song...which again, makes it all the more emotional

So ultimately, while I love them both....for sentiment alone, I will say the studio version is my favorite.

I personally like the studio version best. The production on it is excellent. The live version is good also.

Definitely LIVE!!!!!!!!!!! It's one of my faves!

The studio version leaves me cold. It's very boring and drab. I don't really like the instrumentation on it and find it quite annoying how the song starts out. And, don't stone me, but...I absolutely despise the vocal. :laugh: It's quite possibly one of her most cloying, whiny vocals she's ever recorded, IMO.

The live performance of Silver Springs from The Dance is what made me take notice of Fleetwood Mac and become the obsessive fanatical fan I am proud to be today :laugh:
There is nothing like listening to AND watching that performance. There is nothing more powerful...and it demonstrates better than anything else the Buckingham Nicks interaction that makes them completely unique among all other artists out there.

As for the studio version, I do love it. Stevie's vocals at the end of the song are great...but I prefer the older, wiser, (and still angry) Stevie best.

I heard the original one first (the day it was released), so I'm biased toward that one. However, I do like the arrangement of the live version on The Dance and its "Wish You Were Here"-like intro.

Well...I definately won't stone you. I asked for everyone's opinion, and I definately agree with some of what you said.

I don't like the beginning of the studio version. Thank goodness it gets better though. Once you get to the first 'Don't say that she's pretty...did you say she loved you...' it sounds great. There's a very very simple guitar thing in that part that almost makes up for the not so great guitar solo later. The chorus of course is great. I love the pounding REAL piano in it. The bridge and chorus of the song really have a classic rock sound to them. I love music like that.

Stevie's voice at the beginning is a little whiny. Again...it gets better. Like many of you said...I like how she sounds a little older and wiser and maybe a little angry in the live version.

I like the live version from the Dance a LOT, even though I also enjoy the studio version, but for me I feel a lot more passion coming from the live version...so I'm gonna go with the live version :D

Studio. I feel it was more heart-felt, and her vocal was just so lively, and it wasn't as monotone as the live version. Plus I love the combination of the acoustic guitar and the piano.

For me...live most definately. I just don't get the explosive feeling of the "chorus" with the studio version. I don't know because I also usually prefer studio versions to live...but this is an exception.

Studio, since that's the version I heard first, when I got The Chain box set, and it blew me away. I think the production and arrangements on the studio version are some of the best they ever did. And unlike a lot of you who don't like the studio guitar solo, I love it. I've always loved that lead guitar sound that Lindsey used on Rumours. And I've said it before and I'll say it again, how it was left off and Don't Stop was left on I will never understand!

But the Live version kicks ass too! :laugh:

There's a part in the studio version -right after she says "time" I think- that I always think I'm hearing a phone ring.

Maybe I'm insane, but that's never happened when I listen to the live version. I guess I prefer that one. :)

I've had that happen to me on songs before though. I think it's on ABBA's Lovelight I think I hear the phone. There's also an orchestral thing by David Foster where I always hear the phone.

Song of the moment - Say Goodbye

Definitley the live version from The Dance. The song really rocked on that tour. On the other hand, I'm not caring too much for it this time around. The tempo seems faster and I don't like Stevie's vocals at the end. Very blah in my opinion this time around.

The studio version is a nice song, but I don't find it nearly as explosive as The Dance.

OK everyone here has said that the version they heard first is their favorite. I heard the Dance first and it is VERY intense but I perfer the studio version from TVBOFM, which is equally as intense with a much better vocal. AND I'd like to add that I perfer Silver Springs on the tour to The Dance tour. She really BELTS the WAS I JUST A FOOL and GIVE ME JUST A CHANCE parts.

I believe he gets that sound using a volume pedal, in the same manner as you would use a wah-wah. A wah-wah changes the tone of an instrument, while a volume pedal is self explanatory. A wah can actually be used on other instruments, not just guitar - on the Rumours DVD-A commentary, someone (Christine, I think) talks about how when they recorded the keyboard parts for "You Make Loving Fun," Mick sat under her keyboard and pushed a wah-wah pedal up and down, which is how they got that cool sound. Good times! :)

Thanks for the clarification! I always wanted to know (without being a musician myself) about those pedals. Now I feel I know a little more. :)

I guess I don't get how people can say that the studio version has no real passion. The end of the song - her voice is so powerful - I'll FOLLOW you DOWN til the SOUND of my VOICE will HAUNT you . . .

It gives me chills each time I hear it.

Hummm - what ending is that? The only versions I have heard (excluding live performances) are:

Early piano demo
Outtake #1
Outtake #2
The version on The Chain Box set
The version on the Very Best of FM (I think that is the same one as the box set, just enhanced).

One of the outtakes is a very long version - alot of repeating of the chorus. Is that the one you are talking about?

No, its the version on Very Best of UNCUT...Probably another 30 seconds more.....she yells "OOOOHHHHHHHAAAAAHHHHH" 3 Times, and then the song comes to a stop.

I love her voice now, esp. on The Dance version of Silver Springs. But, her angelic voice in these two 70's live versions is the voice I fell in love with SO many years ago!!!!!!!!! I had never heard the first one (the non "uncirculated Rumors" one). I cried during the "I Loved you, I Loved You, I loved You" part.

I think she is just such an incredible person to be able to capture the magic in the same song with two basically completely different voices and singing styles (then and now) and after 25 years in between. She also did this for me in the White Album version of Landslide (and all live performances I have heard through the Tusk tour) and The Dance version. Same for Gold Dust Woman - the "Go HOOOMMMEEAHAHAHAHFDHSKJHFD:OIASHAHAHHAHHA" exorcism in The Dance version sends chills everytime I hear it as does the Japan Rumors tour live version (which is actually soft in parts)!!!!!:nod:

I would LOVE to see a video of a performance of this song during the '70's. Just from the sound of these live performances, it would be PRETTY INTENSE.

Does anyone know if there is video available of this song from "back in the day"?

Also, I was wondering if anybody knew anything more specific about the shows the two I posted are from? I'm trying to be more dilligent about such things, lol.

I actually kinda thought the "which Silver Springs" question was a little "apples and oranges" because we're comparing a studio version with a live version, and as we all know Stevie fires it up when she's performing live! So now maybe we have a new question: WHICH live version do you prefer? I have to go with '76/'77 Stevie because of the strength of her voice. I actually think she sounds a little strained on most of The Dance version of Silver Springs.

By the by...anyone have any opinions on the last thing she sings on the non-uncirculated Rumours one? On the uncirculated Rumours one I'm pretty sure it's "Even though we tried...even though we tried..." and while I'm pretty sure I hear the word "tried" in there, the rest of it just doesn't sound the same.:confused:

I thought she was saying "even though you try" which is her response to "you'll never get away . . . " But, it is unclear (surprise!!!! :laugh: )
