Tusk and White Album DVD-As - Ken Caillat Speaks
With the rumours going round about the Tusk and White Album DVD-A 5:1 mixes coming out this year and a date for Tusk
- http://buydvdnow.com/Merchant2/merch...&Product_Code= DA100178 I have just got through with talking with Ken Caillat who is mixing these disks and this is what is had to say: Neil, totally bogus info! It will be Christmas at the earliest. The band has to approve the mixes and I won't be playing them until next Wednesday for Lindsey, then it will take 3 months to assemble the DVD and get it out to stores. I'm still mixing the white album as we speak. As far as extras go, Tusk extras: Sara 8 minutes long (full version), Beautiful Child, full instrumentation, contains instruments not used in original stereo mix, Never make me cry, full instrumentation, the same applies to all the mixes really White Album, Landslide, Stevie harmony vocals put back into the mix, So Afraid, more instruments, vocals. I had the original engineer over yesterday, Dave Davore, and he flipped when heard how good and new the 5.1 mixes sounded. There are also 2 song ideas on each album that could be used if the band wants to, and a slow version of So Afraid. But I doubt that they do much special. The band is not focused on DVD, just their future and their private lives, I have offered to Rhino Records to help them get extra stuff for the DVD, but I don't think they care much. What would be a big help would be to have the fans write or call Robin Hurley at Rhino and express their desires for more extras on the album. So guys if we want more rare items on these, lets get in contact with Robin Hurley at Rhino and let them know, anyone got contact details for Rhino? - Neil |

That is a very telling statement.:( I would still like to try to lobby Rhino. It would be great to hear these. I'm sure someone knows how to get in touch with them. |

I am confused though as I assume these DVD extras are different from what we hope to see on the CD reissues I had been trying to get out of David McLees (though was unsuccessful unfortunately) but whatever, here's the contact info I have for David McLees, but I assume instead of addressing it to him you just address it to this Robin person instead: RHINO RECORDS 10635 SANTA MONICA BLVD. LOS ANGELES, CA 90025-4900 PHONE: 310-441-6605 FAX: 310-441-6592 His e mail was [email protected] and [email protected] and his assistant, Karen LeBlanc had the same e mail with the "." being in between her first and last name for the "wmg" one and the "_" being in between her first and last name for the "rhino" one so I'd assume it's the same deal for this Robin. I hope we can get something done about this. Thanks very much for your great efforts on all of this Neil! :) John |
VERY interesting info, Neil... thanks so much for sharing that.
Ken's comments really make me wonder about the status of the "expanded and remastered" discs, though I imagine that Rhino and/or Warners looks at the remastered discs and the DVD-Audios as two completely different entities. So, possibly, given that it takes much longer to mix material into 5.1 surround (and into additional alternate mixes for those who don't have DVD-A players), perhaps they're uninterested in taking the extra time to mix "bonus material" for the DVD-Audios, and just prefer to stick to the album's original running order (excepting the inclusion of "Silver Springs" on 'Rumours,' of course). I believe the info given to MusicTAP was that 'Fleetwood Mac' was to be released on October 5th... so it looks like that release date isn't valid now. I wonder if there are any additional delays regarding the "expanded and remastered" series, or if they're still on track. |
I was wrong... the date given for the 'Fleetwood Mac' DVD-A was originally November 11th.
I must have had it mixed up with the 'Tango' concert DVD, which is scheduled for October 15th. The most recent date given for the US release of the "Expanded & Remastered Series" ('Fleetwood Mac,' 'Rumours,' & 'Tusk'), is October 28th. |
I just wanted to say that in Canada Warner recently discontinued both the exsisting white album and Tusk (Rumours still appears to be in print), so the remastered must be in the plans... somewhere...

First Roseanne is coming to Nick @ Nite, and now this...
HELL YEAH!!! :D |
Thank you Ken Caillat!!! I wish I could work for his company, I love dvd audios and 5.1 sound... He really cares about the content of the albums and the fans. I can't wait for the dvd-audios...
|
Thanks for posting, Neil. I had a feeling the release dates for these DVD-Audios might not be right. There's been nothing on Amazon to pre-order, especially since one was supposed to be released in September. Unfortunately, it sounds like Ken cares more about these DVDs than certain members of the band. I only HOPE the remastered & expanded CDs are still scheduled for release SOON.

More news from Ken regarding the song ideas he has for the DVD-A relesaes of Tusk and Fleetwood Mac (White Album)
Question Could you possible expand as to the two song ideas you have for the DVD-As Keb replies: There are a couple of "Jams" for each album, just ideas really, no vocals, as far as the DVD's go, I'd like to do interviews with the band or include 5.1 mixes without lead vocals, etc or other ideas fans have.. So what do we want on these releases? if you have some ideas, forward them to Robin Hurley at Rhino and let me know and I'll make sure Ken is aware. |
In my opinion... I would really enjoy the 5.1 mix without lead vocals, that would be excellent. I don't really care so much about the interviews, they are interesting, but I rather just have the 5.1 mic minus vocals.
|
I agree David R, I don't care about interviews either, I wish that a DVD-A would let us "play with the mix" like how Ken (& Lindsey) did with Rumours on the "making of Rumours" DVD though unfortunately I don't think this is possible (as I asked him about this at his Q & A here). Hopefully we can get some kind of reasonable facsimile of that though with these. :)

I loved the interviews on the Rumours DVD-Audio, so I'd love to have them on these new DVD-Audios, too. However, considering that these DVDs are apparently not a priority with the band, who knows when they would get done and when these DVDs would finally be released? But, the 5.1 mix without the vocals would be very interesting, too.

Too bad dvd-audio isn't like regular dvds where you can change audio channels, that way we could have both, but dvd-audios can't do that... Well I don't think, but almost sure.... |
I loved the interviews on the Rumours DVD-A, so it would be cool if they could get them for the next two. And non-vocal mixes would kick a$$! It sounds like Lindsey is into the projects, if he's in contact with Ken C. about them, and I've read interviews with Mick where he raves about DVD-A, so I'm guessing the people from whom they're having a hard time getting input are Stevie and Christine. And in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it was just Christine who they can't get to cooperate on these. She is living a very "private life" now in England, and doesn't really seem to want to have anything to do with the band anymore. We'll see. At any rate, I can't wait for these to come out, along with the expanded CD's. Just more FM stuff on which to blow my $!

And her 'Trouble In Shangri-La' album is also apparently getting the DVD-A treatment at some point, which she's undoubtedly aware of. So I *think* she must have some level of interest in the format. Even if it's just a minor one. But with as busy as they all are right now, it doesn't surprise me that these discs are sort of low on their priority list. They're focusing on the current album and tour. Hopefully though, they'll do whatever they can (interviews... signing off on bonus material), to make these special for the fans. |

I have finally collated the feedback and mail Ken, awaiting a reply.
See below for the e-mail: How did the meeting with Lindsey go? Hopefully you got the green light from him? I did manage to get some feedback about what the fanbase would like to see on these DVD-A releases and I have been told that this has been sent to Robin at Rhino. The feedback was as follows: As for my DVD-A extras requests, all I can really say (without knowing specific titles in the WB vaults that have not been released) is any songs that have not been released I'd like to see released, regardless how inferior they may deemed by Ken (or whoever) to be. I'd like to think Ken and co. would give us enough credit to know that we would still respect the band (& it's members) even after hearing "bad" tracks as we are smart enough to know that such recordings were never meant to be released etc. but whatever, I hope all those concerned see it that way. Although fairly interesting, I'd rather hear different VERSIONS of songs as opposed to different MIXES of songs (as extras that is of course) on the DVD-A's but he did such a good job with the Rumours one that I'm sure I'll enjoy whatever it is that he'd put out even if they were to have no bonus material. I do agree with him though that I like to hear the tracks without vocals etc. and such like what I said at the message board about "playing with the mix" but I do realize that the kind of technology that is required for a user to be able to do that is not available to the general public yet so that dream can wait for now. "Interesting" is an understatement - I have one word for you.. Karaoke! haha, that is exactly what I was thinking. But also can you imagine being able to hear 'Tusk'(album) with just the music, how incredible that must sound and in 5.1 sound! Being able to hear every crazy thing Lindsey put on that album. Too bad dvd-audio isn't like regular dvds where you can change audio channels, that way we could have both, but dvd-audios can't do that... Well I don't think, but almost sure.... I know I'd like to have some of the TUSK outtakes including: Beauty and the Beast (blues version), Smile at You (Tusk outtake), The Dealer. In my opinion... I would really enjoy the 5.1 mix without lead vocals, that would be excellent. I don't really care so much about the interviews, they are interesting, but I rather just have the 5.1 mic minus vocals. I agree with the above, I don't care about interviews either, I wish that a DVD-A would let us "play with the mix" like how Ken (& Lindsey) did with Rumours on the "making of Rumours" DVD though unfortunately I don't think this is possible (as I asked him about this at his Q & A here). At any rate, I can't wait for these to come out, along with the expanded CD's. Just more FM stuff on which to blow my $! I would love to hear the jams and the slow version of ISA, basically any unheard alt mixes, or outtakes from the sessions would be excellent. It would also be good to have new interviews with the band members, as we all know everything about the Rumours sessions and recording process, it would be good to hear the band's take on the Tusk and White Album sessions in retrospect. Well Ken, as you can see we have the fanbase talking, I hope this feedback can help you in anyway to get the rare material on these releases. |
Thanks for posting, Neil. Hopefully, you'll get some news back from Ken soon.
|
Isn't Ken also the one who produced Christine's new 2004 album? I'm not sure that one could say that Christine is just not wanting any part in this.
