Song with the Best Harmonies

What Mac song do you think has the best harmonies?

My vote would go to The Farmers Daughter from the Live album. The first time I heard it, I was blown away.

My second choice would be Beautiful Child. That one sends chills. "I bite my lip..." Fabulous.

chiliD 08-12-2003 11:15 AM

The original studio version of "Rhiannon" has some goosebump making harmonies.

I agree about "Farmer's Daughter", but the vocals on that are "studio enhanced", not really a "live" performance.

Chris' "Love Shines".

"Caught In The Rain" (the oooh's & ahhh's)

And a few from Mystery To Me:

The first five songs ("Hypnotized" in particular) plus "Miles Away", "Somebody", "For Your Love" & "Why".

goldustboi 08-12-2003 11:29 AM

There are so many, harmonies are one of the many things I love about Fleetwood Mac.

I agree with all the songs u said so far but I also love all the different layers on " you can go your own waaaaaaaaaaay"

I also love the way stevie harmonises with Christine on the "your mood is like a circus wheel....." part of over my head from the live album.:D

I know it isnt really a harmony but i love the extra part on YMLF on the rumours DVD during the last part of the song when Lyndsey sings "you-ou-ou".

Say You Love Me

stevierocks87 08-12-2003 12:05 PM

I LOVE the harmonies on Over my head from the live album  Stevie's vocals were even more prominent during the white album tour- on the "going home" doc. I have, Stevie is practically SCREAMING that part and you can barely hear Chris! It's great! Hey, what was she supposed to do, she had all of TWO songs that she sang lead on!

other great harmonies:

Honey Hi
Beautiful Child
EOTW (Live Mirage)

I'm with chiliD- the harmonies on the studio version of Rhiannon are just incredible!

:wavey: adam :wavey:

BlueGrass 08-12-2003 12:31 PM

Oh, I would say Honey Hi is my fav.

The chorus of Dreams....wow...!!!!

I Don't Want To Know

The "ooh-la-la-la"'s in the Dance version of Say You Love Me.

The guitar harmonies in Eyes Of The World (live 2003!) ;)

:wavey: :wavey: :wavey:

I think Lindsey's harmonies on "Thrown Down" are some of the best on the entire album. Especially on the third verse: "You say you're sorry, that you should walk away...but it's so overwhelming, you've got nothing left to say..."

And who could forget "Angel"...amazing harmonies. Especially watching them hammer the parts out on the Tusk doc.

Yeah, I figured as much. It was TOO perfect to have been completely live. :D

But the way their voices blend together in that song...I get chillbumps just thinking about it!

Merf 08-12-2003 02:38 PM

Angel
Thrown Down
Dreams
The Chain (from the Dance)
Hold Me (I love hearing Lindsey & Chris's voices together)
Beautiful Child (Live on the SYW Tour-- their voices together just break my heart)
Silver Springs (from the Dance)
Save Me A Place
Say You Love Me
Rhiannon (from the White album)
I Don't Want to Know
Bleed to Love Her
Steal Your Heart Away
Say Goodbye (Live)

DownOnRodeo 08-12-2003 07:41 PM

I was gonna agree with BlueGrass that Say You Love me is the first one to come to mind ... but Josh made me remember Angel. That last chorus ... "So I close my eyes softly..." Great harmony!

Cristian 08-12-2003 09:48 PM

Of course "The Farmer's Daughter" was made for them to showcase their vocal talents, so that's a given. I love it, although I get lost in trying to find Lindsey here. Is he doing a very high note? :)

The harmony issue on Fleetwood Mac was very incorporated to the sound of the band since early days. Remember that "Station Man" is a very rudimentary three-part harmony, but still a very attractive one. Then Christine did great harmonies with Bob Welch in songs like "Hypnotized" or "Why"... But of course the great moment of harmonization comes into Fleetwood Mac when Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham join the band. They do a great job in "Say You Love Me" and "Rhiannon", for that album. One could always rescue the sound that Stevie and Lindsey reached when they sang as a duo. It was so terrific... "Crystal" and "I Don't Want To Know" are examples.

Oh, so many songs... in fact I believe one of the most powerful reasons for me to start getting in to this band in the first place was the vocal mix. "Little Lies" is sublime; "Everywhere" is just fantastic; "Brown Eyes", "Caught In The Rain", "Sara"... they all have this fantastic background harmony; "Angel", "That's Alright", "Think About Me" are three-part rockers (sort-of); I love the Lindsey/Christine duets on "Hold Me" and "Don't Stop" and the very rare Stevie/Christine duets on "Straight Back" and "Skies The Limit".

I also love the harmonies in the much maligned BTM album!!! I like the fact that they are multiparted and they do not sound like a gospell choir. :D

Oh, I'll stop rambling now. They did a wonderful work with vocals in those days... That's something they've been losing these days, I believe (except for some Lindsey harmonies in Stevie songs in Say You Will).... Oh well.

Song of the moment - No Questions Asked

Honey Hi is my favorite.
Also, I like Sara, Never Forget, The Chain, Steal Your Heart Away, Little Lies, and Book of Love.

EveryHour 08-13-2003 03:30 AM

I LOVE this thread, dissention, because I am an ABSOLUTE FREAK for harmonies!!!

Just about every song conains one fab bit or another, but.....

Christine above Stevie on the "Fingers find..." verse of Straight Back. Chills. Absolute chills! My #1.

Stevie below Christine on Never Forget.

Stevie below Christine on Heart Of Stone.

Honey Hi & Farmer's Daughter. Harmony masterpieces.

Stevie & Lindsey...Say Goodbye live. A magical moment coming to a town near you.

Stevie & Lindsey-Beautiful Child.

Any S & L harmony on the B/N album and outtakes. Wow.

Stevie above Lindsey on Second Hand News.

I know it's not technically "harmony", but let's have a moment of silence (for the hundredth time) for the Lindsey ("bum, bum") & Christine ("ooh, ooh") Eyes Of The World interaction.

To name a few...............

:)

TwoTricky 08-13-2003 06:06 AM

Most of my favorites have already been mentioned, with Farmer's Daughter topping the list. Others include:

Little Lies
Sara......(Ooooooh....Sara.......Oooooooooh) it sounds like a dream.
Say You Love Me is an absolute classic
Honey Hi
Think About Me

That's all I could think of off the top of my head and only half way through my first cup of coffee

WednesdaysChild 08-13-2003 09:51 AM

How could I forget "Without You"!?!?!?!?!??!

I want them to re-release BN, but a double album...the second would be all the demos! :D

Lovely! Don't they isolate that bit for our listening pleasure in the Making Of Rumours DVD?! I seem to recall it giving me chills! (I work a lot and have not had the chance to watch it as much as I would like, so I can't recall for sure......):o :D

This has been my secret hope as well....that the reason it is taking so freaking long to come out is because Lindsey and Stevie want to wait until they can take the time to really do it right! Perhaps working some more on the outtakes and including a 2nd disc or ample bonus tracks. ;) Hmmmm...we can only hope!:)

(I know, off subject. Continue discussing harmonies.....)

2.) Dreams- When they removed the instrumental on the Classic Albums DVD... It just, moved me.
3.) Second Hand News- Classic Stevie and Lindsey.
4.) Straight Back- I've never really heard many Stevie/Chris harmonies, but I love this one.
5.) Never Forget- Gorgeous harmonies.
6.) Say You Love Me- Absolutely amazing.
7.) Silver Springs (original)- It's so beautiful, it shows how amazing the three of them can sound.
8.) The Chain- How can I forget that one?
9.) Don't Stop- Especially the end.
10.) Think About Me- One of Lindsey and Chris's best collaborations.

The harmonies in Dreams give me the chillies, and I agree with you on Think About Me. (It's one of my favorite FM songs- ever.)

You Make Lovin Fun also jumps into my mind immediately.. those ahhh ahh ahhs. woo.

I'll have to make a list now.
