Which performance of SOTM is better - Tusk or Mirage??

Ok, people. Time to weigh in on which performance is better.

I have to go with Mirage. The end is just so fabulous with her ranting and she and Lindsey leaning on each other. I love it!

darklinensuit 08-10-2003 06:44 PM

I'll go with Mirage, too. Not just the ranting in tongues & panty spin at the end, but also that super-witchy shot of Stevie in the blue lighting with the wild hair, tapping away. I'd love an avatar of that.
It's hard to believe there are only a few years between these performances. The Tusk one feels almost like a bootleg with that 70s lighting and zoom shots. I do love the crowd reactions in the Tusk one when she raises her hand for dramatic effect.

Dude, the audience....

The audience during SOTM in the Tusk doc...WOW...they went NUTSOS when the lights went up!! It was like this one, giant collective scream!! Gives me chills thinking about it...need to go watch the Tusk doc again. Heh.

Mirage is cool, but I HATE that they edited it, one minute she's all normal, then BAM.....wild, witchy hair and that EDIT. GRR!! Ya gotta love the Mirage "speaking in tongues" part.

Tusk version....when she mouths "would you be my...would you be my...would you be my...." while looking at someone in the audience and her facial expression....that is pretty cool!

They BOTH rock.

Yeah, I agree - the crowd does go nuts when the lights go up!

Come to think of it, the editing at the end is really bad in the Mirage version. One minutes she is banging away and then the scene completly changes. What the hell?

During Tusk when she is mouthing the words, she is nodding her head to the side over and over - it looks like she has some kind of tic!

darklinensuit 08-10-2003 07:13 PM

Trackaghost, you rock, thanks!
But the image is too big so the forum won't let me use it.
Ideas? And keep in mind I'm pretty clueless.

The Mirage version which is so cool, it sounds like she's speaking in tongues at the end there.
Plus Lindsey singing one of the verses is also a highlight for me.

TUSK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The chanting.....

The vulnerability.....

The hand streaked to the sky as she says...

"Of the moon- YEAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

And the crowd goes wild!!!!!

And the finger pointing with-

"It's you, it's you, it's youuuuuu- yeahhh!!! He said, "It's you, it's you, it's you......"

Flips me out ev'ry time.......

BlueGrass 08-10-2003 10:22 PM

HHMM, something about Tusk.

EnchantedSLN 08-10-2003 10:48 PM

Tough question! If we're going only by the performances from the two videos, I have to say Mirage. But for the whole tour overall, I'd go with Tusk-- I love it when she would add the lines from Cecilia: "where have the white birds flown!/have they flown so very far/ no they're just asleep!". There's one from '80 where she does that and then yells "Golden! Emerald! Amber!" or something. One of the Aussie dates, maybe.

darklinensuit 08-10-2003 11:15 PM

Thanks for going to the trouble, Christy, but as Trackaghost anticipated, I've got to have her with the movement. Anybody have any suggestions (other than I shouldn't be so fussy:cool: )?

Mad4stevie 08-10-2003 11:38 PM

I would like to know how to make these avatars in the first place - movement or no movement!

EveryHour 08-11-2003 01:37 AM

It's impossible to choose!

The Tusk one is special to me, though, because it was the first video clip I EVER saw of Stevie/FM! Can you IMAGINE the impact of that?!!

That's the part I like best. Plus where she's freaking out at the end, and it looks like Lindsey goes up to John and says, "Dude, she's losing it". LOL!

And I also like where he leans on her while she's crying. Interesting.

You save the picture on your hard drive, and bring it up in a picture program (I use MGI Photo Suite 8.1) then shrink the photo to 50 x 50. That's what I did to that Stevie photo, but for some reason, I can't get it to move. LOL

Anyone know?

Exactly! That blue lighting, frizzed out hair and tapping just sets the tone for what's to come. The suspense just puts you on the edge of your seat.

So I vote for the Mirage SOTM, probably my favorite all time Stevie performance.

I used to love the '82 one but now I love the '79 one. The older one was shot on film & the newer one on video, & I like the satiny look of the film stock a lot more. The video is too metallic & the lights too glary.

I don't think that's editing - she leaves the stage during LB's guitar solo - and poofed her hair out- put on more lipstick and probably did a line too *heh*. The lighting makes her hair look poofier than it really is....

I prefer the Mirage one for the look - I think Stevie never looked better than during this period - and the "speaking in tongues."

strandinthewind 08-11-2003 02:47 PM

The Tusk recording has it all - an academic vocally superior performace, passion, audience interaction, singing away from the mic., hand raising and the spot light coming on, that cool cloak with the hood, etc. So, I think this one wins from an academic point of view.

Yet, the passion (phew!!!!!!), bizarre if not strained and shrieking vocal, and the drugged out cow bell sequence in the Mirage one are something to behold! Did I forget to mention my fav. part - the panty revealing spin where she almost falls over!!!!!!

You know, what I wonder about during the "speaking in tongues" part is at what point does the rest of the band (if they do at all) hear this and say "what the hell?".

Sure, the band digs it when she does her "exorcism" Rhiannon, but at this point, you would think that would at least cross Christine's mind that , "Hey, Stevie, you a just a little too crazy".

go6car 08-12-2003 09:19 AM

Both are like cake and ice cream. I can never decide.

I do love the shot in the Tusk documentry when Stevie throws her fist in the air, then the camera pulls back and the whole audience follows suit.

(PS: I am still totally cracking up over DarkLinenSuit's bouncing Stevie every time I read a post...... )

seteca 08-12-2003 01:09 PM

Definitely the '82 version. For many reasons, but a few specific ones come to mind...

Lindsey singing "Some call her....etc etc".......hair-raising!!

That chorus-drenched guitar tone is so chilling during the verses and solos, and awesomely powerful during the chorus!

And of course.....Stevie going nuts with the vocals at the end...speaking in tongues...whatever you want to call it....it's fantastic!!

(Besides....the cloak 'n hood in the '79 version freaks me the hell out!:distress:....lol!)

:wavey: :wavey: :wavey:

joe 08-12-2003 01:41 PM

first of all, the cloak n hood thing you guys are talking about is the same thing in both concerts....as a matter of fact, it's also the same (although different chiffon) as during the Bella Donna concert during "Rhiannon"...it's not an official "hood" as it is just her chiffon scarf pinned to her hair....i think it just looks like a hood in the Tusk concert cause her hair was bushier....

anyway my favorite performance is from the Tusk Documentary but i'm going to list my favorite parts from both:

Tusk:
-Stevie banging the cowbell during the first verse with that stare into the audience
-"she called....to meeeeeee, yeahhhhhhh" and the wayt she just turns away from the mic to put the cowbell on Mick's drum platform.
-hurrying to the mic at the second verse and almost missing her cue
-the hand gesture during "cannot for love nor money"
-"ooh....know my name...yeah!!!!"
- the shot of Lindsey throwing his head back during the "some call her sisters of the moon" verses as he looks at the audience
-Lindseys guitar solos rock!
-Stevie, during the last verse, raising and preparing the mic for her explosive ending
-Stevie raising her arm straight above her with the audience going wild and standing on their feet during the finale.
-Stevie walking around the stage mouthing "would you be mine, would you be mine, would you be mine?"
-"it's only you, it's you, it's you, it's you!"
-Stevie dropping to a kneeling position and then graciously rising with her hands together and taking a bow....classic!

ok now Mirage:
-the middle part when she comes crawling out from the side of the stage like a spider and starts the cowbell thing
-the ending "speaking in tongues"
-the "sister.....brother.....sister.....brother.....oooh of the....moon and you say no baby!!!"
-Lindsey leaning on Stevie towards the end of the song

i think the editing on the Mirage concert sucked during this song especially cause one minute she had this wild look and then the next minute her hair was combed down and she was more subdued. Didn't she realize that she should look the same for both nights since they were filming? i guess not. no big deal....only us anal retentive fans would notice!!!

I JUST found the 78 version on my computer and dont know how it got there (LOL) but anyway...who is singing harmony with her during the OOOOOHHHHH's? Not Christine??

mylittledemon 08-12-2003 09:40 PM

I'm going with Mirage

Yeah the Mirage version is better but its a bad, bad edit. There's that point when Mick hits the snare twice and then Stevie goes..."So we make our choices..." That's a real bad edit.

At any rate...the Mirage version is much more "coked up" as I like to call it. Lindsey and Stevie have that repoire going at the end, and his guitar outro solo is incredible.

Yes. The editing at the end sucks. Especially since the vibe Stevie had going at the point was so cool. It was anything BUT a smooth transition!

The funny thing is that the cowbell that Stevie is using for some reason reminded me of that SNL cowbell skit with Will Farrell playing the cowbell. As they said in the skit, "I have a fever and the only prescription is MORE COWBELL". Too funny!!

Check this out:

KLBJ Cow Bell Thread

This is the morning show I listen to every day (cliffdweller may have heard of this too). They've been talking about the SNL cow bell sketch for like 3 weeks now. There's a link in that thread to an avi of the sketch. One of the DJ's, Bob, recently purchased a cow bell and tries to sit in and play it w/ all the bands who come on the show. Another DJ, Dale, does a GREAT Christopher Walken and mentions "what I NEED....is more cow BELL" several times an hour. It's hilarious! My 2 cents are also in that thread-I mentioned Stevie's cow bell and wood block at the Phoenix Hard Rock.

Janet 08-14-2003 01:22 PM

Oh Mirage for sure.

Stevie is so depressed, sad and coked up and her performance is nothing but heartbreaking. Even Lindsey gets off his high horse and shows affection ( hey, Im sure he pretty much despises her at this point). He knew Robin and this is right when that happened. Shes just like...giving it her all , and shes sweating and crying and the blue light and her beauty which cannot be hidden even with all thats going on.

Just a awesome performance...even if its not her really trying...its just Stevie, natural, without barriers.

chiliD 08-14-2003 01:45 PM

I was fortunate to be at both shows at the Great Western Forum that were filmed for the Mirage HBO special and video. One night, everybody was all smiles & huggy-touchy, the next there was bad vibes amongst EVERYBODY, ESPECIALLY between Lindsey & Stevie. You can tell when you watch the video which cuts are from which show. The "mad" night, the performances were a little more "intense", but a little sloppy, from either a vocal harmony standpoint and from a "hitting all the breaks & endings right" place...on the "happy" night, the performances were "tighter"; the vocal harmonies were spot on and Lindsey's guitar was in tune the whole night...but, I wouldn't say they were just "going through the motions", but the emotional intensity was at a lower level.

I think the 1982 performances of "Sisters Of The Moon" were a tad bit better than the Tusk tour, mainly because they'd had a tour's worth of performances already under their belt by that time. Being the first encore song in 1982, it was a kind of "featured" piece instead of it being "just another new one off our latest album" song.

Just a point: I think it is safe to say that "coked up" was EVERY show from 1975 til the mid-80's...wasn't just a Mirage tour phenomenon.

P.S.: The Mirage version rocks for two reasons:

2) I'm not familar with the Tusk version

Tusk is great, but Stevie just had a different voice in 82, IMO more exciting, and awsome, maybe more mature:confused: ??than the Tusk tour, so I say Mirage:D
