Inspiration for "I Can't Wait"

I watched this video again recently and wondered who Stevie had written this about. Can anyone clue me in?

The other things that I wondered were:

1. Why is Mick in her video?
2. What kind of weird dancing is THAT?
3. Was Stevie still coked up during this song period?

I have no idea who it was written about. I know that Stevie got the track from someone and then wrote the lyrics to go with the music. :)

1. It's not Mick in the video...it's her brother, Chris Nicks. :distress:
2. Stevie's "I-don't-know-how-to-dance-so-I'll-just-thrash-my-dress-around-and-stomp-my-boots-and-do-some-funky-hand-gestures" dance.
3. Yeah, Stevie was still using drugs at that point.

Great video, though. :D

Seriously, THAT WAS CRIS NICKS?!? It looked like Mick to me - hat and all. Granted, I didn't look that closely, but I never really thought it could be anyone but him. I will have to watch it again.

I always had a feeling it was about Lindsey because even though she pretty much probably hated Lindsey at that time, that relationship always carried through her other relationships and she often does write songs that are a reflection of the past. If you read between her lines, you can get the gist of it.....

Sometime she talks to him
Sometimes when she's only dreaming
Then when she wakes up
Somehow well she still believes him

Yes, I know you
Tho we've been out of touch
Yes, I know you
To be continued, it's too much well

I can't wait...I can't wait
Well am I wasting my time while you make up your mind
Well, I can't wait...I can't wait
Well, I've got to know when I can see you again, now baby
I can't wait...I can't wait
Well yes, I know you
Tho we've been out of touch
I can't wait...I can't wait
What can I do when I'm crazy for you

She wonders how many more hours
Her heart will feel broken
In secret she says she needs to see him
But no words are spoken

Well, she dances around in a circle
Well she's got that feeling now
Blame it on something at first sight
Put the blame on me if you want to
To be continued

I can't wait...I can't wait
Am I wasting my time while you make up your mind now baby
Well, I can't wait...I can't wait
Now I've got to know when I can see you again
Well, I can't wait...I can't wait
What can I do when I'm crazy for you baby
I can't wait...I can't wait
I can't wait...I can't wait
If I'm wasting my time...make up your mind..well...
(How will we feel 10 years from now)

I thought Chris and Mick are both in the video.
I thought Chris is the guy doing the syncronized dancing with the ladies.
I thought Mick is the one doing the funny slightly bent forgot-the-toilet-paper walk at the top of the stairs.

Yep!

Mick is definitely in the I Can't Wait video. He's the one who stands there for a second on the stairs and then goes into a kind of "I'm scared" pose and, as Jake said, that bent over walk across the stairs. Mick is ALSO in the video for If Anyone Falls...he's the one in the monk-looking outfit walking with Stevie at the beginning and at the end. I don't know why Mick is in these videos, but he's also with her on the Red Rocks video...he might have just been bored since there was nothing going on with Fleetwood Mac at that point.

hey! I can do that dance! (I mean not the dress part, but the rest!) LOL

dissention 08-08-2003 12:51 PM

I didn't know Mick was in it! LOL I always thought they were both Chris Nicks.

*scrambles to put the I Can't Wait video in the VCR*

Mick & Stevie used to hang around together a lot in those days. As I recall, he even went out on tour with her in 1986, at least for part of the time. He showed up at all the California shows playing congas, sort of doubling Bobbye Hall. Stevie used to take all sorts of time concocting (or more like confabulating) a weird intro for Mick at those shows. She really loved having him there. Two cokeheads on top of the world.

I remember that in her Innerview with Jim Ladd in 1986, she talks about the genesis of "I Can't Wait." Anyone remember what she said?

WednesdaysChild 08-08-2003 01:16 PM

Hmmm, so did anything else happen between Mick and Stevie during her tours???

gldstwmn 08-08-2003 01:51 PM

Stevie showed up at a club show in Boulder Colorado with Mick's band around this same time. I missed it but a freind told me Stevie jumped out a Datsun 280-Z and ran in the back door of the club (might have been Tulagi) and rocked out with the boys.

I've often wondered if Mick was acting as an informal liaison between Stevie and Fleetwood Mac at the time.
Ostensibly making guest appearances as a gesture of friendship, but also sort of making sure that their "star" would continue to be in good spirits, and willing to lend her songs and voice to the Fleetwood Mac album in progress.

Re: the If Anyone Falls video.
I have a compilation that includes this and a Mick video (I think it's with the Zoo) where he and Stevie are in the same costumes, and the cinematography is similar as well. Extras are in medieval/Renaissance garb.
Anybody know what song/video I'm referring to? I don't feel like digging it out.

Stevie really prides herself in her dancing I can't believe you'd say that about her! LOL!!

I always thought it was funny though, she talks about how she can dance but all we see on stage and in videos is stiff, controlled movements. I say, let go Stevie, get down with your bad self!

By the way, it seems as if "I Can't Wait" is the first song Stevie and Rick Nowels collaborated on.

From the 'Timespace' liner notes....
Quote:

I think this was about the most exciting song that I had ever heard. My friend, Rick, whom I had known since I was eighteen and he was thirteen, brought over this track with this incredible percussion thing, and gave it to me asking me if I would listen to it and consider writing a song for it... I listened to the song once, and pretended not to be that knocked out, but the second Rick left, I ran to my little recording studio and wrote "I Can't Wait."
It took all night, and I think it is all about how electric I felt about this music... And that night, that SATURDAY night, Rick and I went into a BIG studio and recorded it. I sang it only once, and have never sung it since in the studio. Some vocals are magic and simply not able to beat. So I let go of it, as new to me as it was; but you know, now when I hear it on the radio, this incredible feeling comes over me, like something really incredible is about to happen...
To understand this song, you sort of have to let yourself go a little crazy... love is blind, it never works out.. but you just have to have it...

The song/video was "I Want You Back."
("buh-buh-buh... I want you back again....")

The "control" of her movements you refer to must have to do with her practise of/interest in ballet. I love her dancing! And you've never seen her let loose? Check out Angel in the Tusk Documentary! Mashed Potatoes anyone?!

Yeah, I've seen it. Guess I forgot about it. I think I'm just so used to the "controlled" modern day Nicks. I guess I need to get my hands on a larger supply of older footage. Anyway, I don't know if this is dancing related or if she was just WAY too coked up but she did fall off a stage during the "Rock a Little" tour. I guess she rocked a little too hard!

strandinthewind 08-11-2003 12:19 PM

She also danced a great deal in The Dance tour.

darklinensuit 08-12-2003 01:47 AM

I don't know that I'd call it letting loose, but I love her Gold and Braid moves in the HBO concert.
