SYW DVD-Worth it?
 

I love the SYW CD-is it worth it to also get the DVD? I heard at least one song had different parts to it? Let me know!

When your head explodes in amazement after listening to Murrow you think the dvd was an awesome deal--imagine 10 Lindseys standing at various points of your room singing to you. But don't buy it unless you have a 5.1 system.

My jaw was on the FLOOR when I first listened to Murrow on the DVD-Audio....I mean, WOAH!!! INTENSE and you'll get goosebumps seriously.

Thrown Down is also much better (IMO); it has added harmony in the chorus in the form of an echo of Thrown Down (Thrown Down ) Like a Barricade (Like a Barricade), etc. Miranda, however, is my favorite on the DVD-A. Red Rover also is cool with the multi channel effects. Oh hell, I like them all!!!! :laugh:

dvd-audio is the best thing since sliced bread err I mean cds... I wish "tusk" would be released in dvd-audio... could you imagine how awesome that would sound...

What is DVD audio exactly? A music CD that is only meant for DVD's...no picture, but can't be played in a regular CD player?

I put my SYW regular CD in my DVD player just to experiment and it sounds GREAT!!! SO much better--and I just have a TV, no fancy speakers or anything.

Is the DVD still available? I have looked for it everywhere and I cannot seem to find it. Amazon doesn't have it listed anymore...

I don't have the SYW DVD-A (I actually haven't seen it anywhere), but I do have the Rumours DVD-A, and I can tell you it is definitely worth it, and I hope they release Tusk and the White Album in the format soon. It's like hearing the album again for the first time. You here it the way it was supposed to be mixed, and you hear things you never heard before on vinyl or CD. It's like sitting in the studio and having them play around you (and this is just playing it on my DVD player through the TV, no stereo). The "Making of" tracks are also very informative, and some of the rare pictures are pretty cool to see too. Good times! :thumbsup:

I don't have the DVD-A yet, but I saw it just last week at the Best Buy here in Phoenix. After reading this thread I think I may invest, even though I don't have a surround sound system.

No, it was the one in Ahwatukee, at 50th St. and Ray Rd. If you don't know the Ahwatukee area, it's right off I-10 at the Ray Rd. exit. You can see Best Buy from the highway. IF I remember correctly, they had multiple copies. I ALMOST bought it, then didn't. Now I wish I had.

I got mine at a Best Buy - and it's totally worth it! DVD-A rocks!!!

I vowed after buying the Limited Edition Say You Will that I was not going to buy the DVD-A but I was up in Worcester for their shows and found it at Media Play for $17.99....I gave in and bought it, the sound is crisp and very cool if you sit in a room surrounded with those voices!:)

The 'Say You Will' DVD-Audio is definitely worth owning, in my opinion... if you have your DVD player hooked up to a stereo system, and not just your TV (although I can still hear the difference even when I listen thru my TV speakers).

Highlights: "Murrow," "Thrown Down," and "Destiny Rules."

For anyone thinking of purchasing it, Amazon.com is currently selling it for $14.99, and I imagine that's the best price you'll find anywhere.

I bought the "say you will" cd, limited edition cd, and the dvd audio the same day... I did my part supporting the mac... haha...

It is great sounding, I wish more stuff had been added like the rumours DVD-audio... even if you listen to it with headphones it is suppose to sound great because it is recorded at a higher rate...

I also have the dvd-audio of Boz Scaggs "Dig" that sounds great too... overall dvd-audios are amazing just not alot of people are buying them yet... they still need more support.... and sony needs to stop making super audio discs... sony and their dumb formats...

A dvd-audio is a DVD that displays pictures while playing music in a 5.1 surround sound format but also supports 2.0 dolby digital(regular stereo)... it can only be played on a DVD player...

*there are special dvd players that play dvd audio disc better than regular dvd players but I haven't had to listen to the difference on a dvd-audio player*...

Well, almost correct. Without getting too technical, DVD-audio (a.k.a DVD-A) is a higher resolution, greater frequency range format than that of cd. To be compatible with regular DVD players, DVD-A discs may also include Dolby Digital (usually 2.0 stereo or 5.1 surround) and/or DTS tracks (these satisfy the DVD-Video specifications).

The "advantage" of DVD-A over Dolby Digital, DTS and regular cd is the higher quality audio available in the DVD-A format. Whether you hear that difference is dependent on your system and the "quality" of the DVD-A audio mix. Yes, there are some bad DVD-A mixes out there. Faith Hill's "Cry" DVD-A mix comes to mind.

And I still say that Ken Caillat "screwed up" GYOW in the Rumours DVD-A disc (at least the DVD-A mix). The drums are too boomy and the vocals are too distant. IMHO, the stereo GYOW version included in the DVD-A, sounds better.

Bottom line is if you have a DVD player that doesn't support DVD-A, then your listening to either the Dolby Digital or DTS versions, not DVD-Audio.

Also, even if you have a DVD-A capable player, if your not using the DVD player's 6 analog outputs (front left, front right, center, rear left, rear right, subwoofer) to connect to the receiver, then your not outputting the DVD-A signal. If your connection to the receiver is by a single standard digital coaxial or optical cable, then your outputting either Dolby Digital, DTS or regular cd stereo (remember, Dolby Digital and DTS, which are audio formats, are part of the DVD-Video specification, not the DVD-Audio specification). Confused yet?

Coaxial and optical cables are not capable of handling the data rates that can be generated by a DVD-Audio player. Future DVD-Audio players may include a digital FireWire (IEEE 1394) connection with can handle the high data rate. You'll find a FireWire connection in most digital video camcorders and some pc's.

And by the way, the SYW DVD-A disc is worth it.
